New member and diagnosis
« on: June 21, 2011, 12:02:00 AM »
I have been lurking here for a couple weeks - ever since the initial test result that brought me to the site and forums.  I wanted to thank all of you for keeping it real and sharing the advice, stories, and experiences that have helped me through the last couple weeks as I got the initial results, found and met an ID doc last week, and got the call today confirming it's all really happening.

I tend to internalize a lot of things, so it took me a couple weeks to work through the initial results and tell my partner - which was partly a relief for me from having finally told someone and for him since he'd noticed how detached, pulled back, and asexual I'd been and was worried.  Since we were both involved in the presumed exposure last fall (and with each other since then), we are on edge awaiting his results.

I have to thank those who pointed out the books available for dealing with a new HIV diagnosis - being able to download the Kindle version of a couple books helped prep me and guide me for all the crap that is engulfing my life now and learning what to expect in the coming days and understanding the call I got today.  Plus, not having to walk into a bookstore and look for them helped too...

Today, I found that the tests all were confirmed - poz with no other infections, CD4 357, VL 16782.  Doc says he thinks this is good and that I should go on my planned vacation knowing that I'm healthy and going to be fine.  I'm going in for another set of tests before we leave and we'll talk meds then, but won't consider starting until I return from the trip.
May 2010 - tested negative
May 2011 - THE sample taken
June 15, 2011 - VL 16782 - CD4 357 / 35.6%
July 22, 2011 - VL 188031 - CD4 378 / 31.4%
July 30, 2011 - started Atripla
Aug. 25, 2011 - VL 1611
Sept. 23, 2011 - VL 408
Dec. 23, 2011 - VL undetec - CD4 738 / 31.1%

Mp11, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I certainly can understand all the emotions you are going through right now. This forum does help a lot where one can find support and talk about it.

I hope your partner's result will be negative. Enjoy your vacation and take things one at a time.

Thanks - his test came back negative today, so we are both relieved and trying to figure out what this means for us.  He's started reading up to understand what I'm going through better and will be tested again in a few months to confirm.

Mp11, that is great news indeed. I hope he will remain neg. It is not easy and there will be adjustment. I hope you will support each other during this difficult time.
