STONEWALL on PBS Frontline June 14
« on: June 14, 2011, 06:42:25 AM »
There is a new (I think all new) pbs frontline docu running. Date says 2011, so I think this is new?
But it is a good one. On again today 6/14 @ 8:30 AM CST. May air differently on other local pbs stations, but usually PBS re-runs their frontline shows often.
I myself know just basically about stonewall, but this was a new one for me, and very eye opening.
Especially as to the history of the gay community, how we were treated not so long ago.
And I could see why things, in so many ways, have not really changed that much today.

After watching this I think we are pretty much still living in the 1960's.
At least in a lot of people and politicians minds.
Especially on the republican side. What do we need? Another stonewall-like rebellion?
Im starting to think so...

Try to catch this frontline on stonewall if you can. It is our history.
And note that the founder of the first gay organization, when he on TV talking about his sexuality,
he felt he had to lie on camera that he "did not do that sort of thing anymore (i.e. homosexuality)".
A bit shocking, considering who he was and what he started. In fear, and on camera, he had to make excuses.
But his little grin gave him away.
And if republicans had their way today, we'd be right back in stonewall America 1969.
Also interesting was the "mob" involvement in the early gay movement i.e. the bars.

pS.. Very interesting contrast first watching this frontline special, THEN watching the republican debates the same night on CNN. A real wake-up call.

Amusing Randy. I tried to watch the GOP debates on CNN and only made it through about 40 minutes, then changed the channels and found the PBS Stonewall Uprising listing and watched that, though I missed the first 25 minutes of it. At first I thought surely I'd seen it previously, but then thought not. And you're correct, this is a new documentary produced just this year.

It's definitely the best accounting of this period I've seen on film/video, though I need to see the first part I missed.

Last night I watched Stonewall Uprising by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner.  It was great.
Is this the doc you are talking about?

For those with an iPad or iPhone it us available in its entirety thru the PBS app (a great app with lots of videos in HD and other goodies).  Not sure if your Android phone has a similar app, but if it does you can catch the 20 minutes that you missed.

Edit: Oh, and they actually have the full video on their website:

Sorry girl, too late -- I've moved on to something more important. The first trailer for A-List New York Season Two just appeared.
