Maggie Smith and gay intrigue in Downton Abbey
« on: April 22, 2011, 06:59:15 PM »
First I saw the Comic Relief parody:

Uptown Downstairs Abbey Part One
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5dMlXentLw
Part Two
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3YYo_5rxFE&feature=relmfu

Featuring Kim Cattrall, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley!!!!

So now I'm watching series.  I don't love this genre but they have definitely freshened up the usual themes and it looks wonderful in hi-def.

I like the American money bags, (Elizabeth McGovern), whose money saved the estate.

And its just fun to watch Maggie Smith camping all the way through it.

And all the faggotry, my my my.

The house used in the filming is half in ruins, only a few public rooms are left open as film sets and wedding rentals.  Its not old, mid 19th Century.

OK.  I don't like the series enough to visit the place, but I guess the true state of the home is worth noting.

Just life imitating fiction.

That early 20th C Lord (Earl?) - always fretting about saving this estate, says it is his life's work.  It seems so superficial in today's standards.

Now here we are 100 years later and a real estate, serving as the set for this fiction, is but a fading reminder of its former glory.  I was curious about the architecture because it was difficult to place. Thats why I looked up the set. It's a fake "high Elizabethan, Renaissance" palace from the revival periods of the 19th C.  A Rothschild built a very similar one.  Mentmore Towers.

The wiki article on the latter is interesting - the UK government refused to buy the collection nor the house in the 1970's. (Go Labour!).  It was the greatest private art collection outside royal hands in the world. The collection was auctioned and the house was sold to Transcendental Meditation maharishi.  I think that's hilarious.
