Say what you will about Mississippi

But this is the first time I've ever heard of the Phelps clan / Westboro Baptist Church ever being thwarted from their goal to such a degree.

Only you could link to an article which takes a defeat for the Phelps clan and turns it into a vile attack on the Democratic Party.

it is good to read that people are finally standing up en masse to the Phelps and their harassing hatred. I wish there was someway better to legally handle this hate speech and stop the Phelps; but as long as they parade under the banner of religion, many people are going to be hesitant to legally attack and castigate them. It seems the people of Brandon found a good way to stop this nonsense by pushing back.

Sometimes the truth just isn't as pretty as we wish it was; but that isn't a good excuse to attack the messenger (Trey or this article) for the message. After reading that section, which only lists the years and positions Phelps ran for as a candidate under the Democratic banner, I differ with the opinion that is a 'vile attack on the Democratic Party'. Neither this article, the wiki link not the hillbuzz link says anything negative about the Democratic Party. All these articles simply and accurately list Phelps' runs as a "D" for mayor several times, for the governorship, and for a senatorial position. The links to the Al Gore campaign per se seem a bit sketchier though.

What these articles actually show, instead of reading anything else into it, is not an attack on a political party; but they expose how this vile group of people have used the political system (ie running for office) to try to garner some sort of legitimacy or to at least look like they have more legitimacy than they actually do. I would posit that quite a number of "religious" people have run under the conservative Republican banner for the last 30 yrs or so to garner political legitimacy until they have undermined the the intent of the fiscally conservative arm of that party and made it into the more morally/socially conservative party that it is today. It's really not surprising to see that another group of "religious" people (ie the Phelps) have tried the same scam through the Democratic Party. I wouldn't doubt that we could find other fringe religious groups that have tried political campaigns under the Democratic Party banner (for example, Jim Jones, although he never campaigned as a "D", had various ties to the Democrats http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_jones#Move_to_San_Francisco)

(Westboro protestors) ran his mouth at a Brandon gas station and got his arse waxed...when police questioned the witnesses no one seemed to remember anything about what had happened.

Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates in the hotel parking lot and the drivers mysteriously disappeared until after the funeral was over. Police were called but their wrecker service was running behind and it was going to be a few hours before they could tow the trucks

A few made it to the funeral but were ushered away to be questioned about a crime they might have possibly been involved in

LOL. Good Job Brandon, MS.  ;D

btw, is it just me or does it seem the procession is moving at about 60mph in the video?

I'm sure the Phelps clan does not realize just how much they have furthered  the cause of equal rights for gays.  That is the genius that is freedom of speach.   Shout it. Say it proudly reverend!!! Don't let anyone quiet your rhetoric.

Exactly my feelings about the article (though not so much about the OP).  From the article...
Quote
UPDATE: Some of the feedback we’ve received from this piece came along the lines that it’s inappropriate to refer to Fred Phelps as a “Democrat activist.”
We stand by that characterization. If anything, it’s an understatement.
He last ran as a Democrat in '98... I'd be curious as to how he voted in the most recent elections.  Their mentioning that he ran as a Dem 12.5 years ago was not  for historical purposes.

wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_phelps) also mentions his Democratic Party affiliation as it was only under that banner that he ever ran for office. This information was not about his voting record (which is NOT public records for any citizen); but his actual political activities. He never ran under the Republican banner. During the 92 campaign season, he and his church actively denounced Gore and the Clintons. During President Bush's term, multiple states and the federal government passed laws restricting the distance a protest could be from a funeral.

A very creative way to deal with the problem of the Phelps clan.  I love the phrase "got his arse waxed," which brings to mind something entirely unrelated, from "Mrs. Brown's Boys":

I stick by my political views and why you persist in thinking I'm some sort of neo-con despite my obvious liberal leanings is beyond me.
