The Semi-Official iPhone/iPad/iPodTouch App Thread
« on: December 27, 2010, 08:45:21 PM »
Okay folks... so I got a new 32 gb 4th gen iPod Touch for Christmas, and have been busy finding all the best apps to load on it, and seeing how popular these various devices are, I thought it would be fun to start a thread where we pozzies could discuss the various apps we have on our tech gadgets and possibly give each other ideas of what to try! Anyone else interested in this idea?

I have an iPad. I just started playing the game Angry Birds and I am hooked. My partner is obsessed with Farm Story and has "neighbors" all over the world, including some little farm vixen in Pennsylvania who flirts with his shamelessly. My favorite apps include Nook reader, Skype, Air Video, Netflix, Star Walk and Pandora.

Angry Birds is great! Sometimes I end up having to try the same level like 20 times before I can beat it, but its still loads of fun. Another neat game I found is called Bounce Bullet. It involves shooting targets but the bullet will bounce around the screen, so you can get more than what is just in your sight the first time. Its a cool strategy thing.

Another neat app I have is called Lose It!. It is a calorie tracker/ weight management app. Very useful. My nutritionist has been telling me over and over to keep a food log, and I never got around to it, but this makes it so easy and fun.

Oh, and I should mention that Manhunt finally came out with an iPhone (and company) app after having an Android app for a long time. LOL

I'm surprised Apple would approve a Manhunt app. I read that Apple had pulled adult oriented apps. Does Apple still have a Grindr app?

I'm sure Apple has a similar app but I also really like the Cardio Trainer app for Android. While you are running and listening to music it tells you periodically how far, fast and long  you have run. It automatically uploads a map of your run with all the stats including calories burned, elevation change, etc. That program alone is worth the price of the phone.

Oh yeah, they still have Grindr. I think the reason they can be approved is that the adult pics aren't allowed. I know because when I went on the Manhunt app the other night all the "adult" pics had "not safe for app" written over them. I think that's how the app owners get them past Apple's draconian rules. But yeah, there are a multitude of hookup apps. Just search "gay" and you'll see.

I got the iPad primarily as a reader and most of the time that is how I use it. For example I am using it right now following reading the morning news.

Yeah, supposedly you can read on the iPhone/iPod Touch, but at that size, its gotta be difficult.

Another app I recommend is My Medical. Its a Personal Health Record app where you can store your medications, doctors, emergency contacts, and even track and graph your lab results. And illnesses and such. Great for keeping tabs on all things health related for those of us with complicated health issues.

Of course there is a Kindle app for the iPad.

Amazon: Kindle books outselling paperbacks

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20029839-1.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0

Yes, it's finally happened. The digital book has overtaken the paper book on Amazon.com. In reporting its latest earnings, Amazon said that it was selling more Kindle books than paperback books, though the score is still close. Since January 1, for every 100 paperback books Amazon sold, 115 Kindle books were sold. To top it off, the company says that since the beginning of the year it's sold three times as many Kindle books as hardcover books. Amazon noted that this data was from "across Amazon.com's entire U.S. book business and includes sales of books where there is no Kindle edition." It added that free Kindle books were excluded from the tally.

While Amazon has said previously that Kindle e-book sales were outpacing hardcover sales, this is the first time it's said that Kindle books were outselling paperbacks, which typically cost significantly less than hardcovers.

Yep, I have the Kindle app on my Touch. Don't use it much right now, but have it there should I feel the need to buy a book I just have to read!

I just recently downloaded a meditation timer app called Meditator that allows for customization of beginning and ending sounds, interval sounds and frequencies, and background music/sounds and more. Its a great addition to my meditation practice which really helps with stress reduction.

As I mentioned before I use the Nook app. A convenient feature, which is also available with Kindle, is synching my current book on both my iPad and Android phone so I can automatically pick up where I left off.

They just came out with an app which can control your TiVo. It know it sounds lame but it is unbelievably convenient and if you have a TiVo is a must have.

Is the "My Medical" password protected?  I can only imagine loosing my phone and having someone see all my med info.

I recently got the EVO.  I love it.  I'm just now discovering all the apps as I had a Windows Mobile phone before.  I know Apple doesn't have all the same apps as Android.  So far, I enjoy "Qik".  The video is actually very good.  I used it from the beach to experience sunsets with family and friends and for me to check up on my dogs.  "TiKL-Touch To Talk" is also nice for those who like Nextel's direct connect feature.  If you just need to ask someone a quick question, you can just walkie-talkie them.

Other boring ones are "Smooth Calendar", "Places"--but this is very helpful when searching for stores, restaurants, etc.  I like all the webcams on "WeatherBug" for each city you choose.  I know, boring.

My brother has the "On-Star" app.  He can check how much gas he has, tire pressure, etc.  He can also unlock the doors or start his car from anywhere in the world.  Right now, you have to be in range to start the car with the keyless entry device.  This allows you to start your car while you're in a store, so it will be nice and warm or cool.  He also has an app that checks your pulse and one that shows you all the constellations in the sky.  You just hold your phone up in a particular part of the sky and it tells you what is up there.  That seems like something you'd just use once or twice.

I'm looking forward to hearing about more interesting apps.  So far, I've only used the normal and often boring ones.  I'm still waiting on that app where you pee on this chip and insert it into a reader and it tells you whether you have an STD.

I heard about the TIVO app.  I suppose it is like the TIVO website where you can schedule recordings over the internets?  I've been wondering why TIVO doesn't come out with something like Slingbox.  As I've mentioned before, a Slingbox is something you connect to your TIVO or DVR.  It allows you to watch and control your TV from your computer or smart phone.  I can watch my TIVO from my phone.  On Sprint, it works great with awesome quality.  You can also connect cameras to it so you can view your home.  TIVO could easily do this same thing I think.  This would make the TIVO app more useful--if you could actually watch your recordings on the app.  I've heard they are working on letting you be able to connect to another TIVO--like if a friend has a show recorded and wants you to watch it, but not as an app.

What makes the TiVo app great is that you can quickly scroll through the channel guide, search for shows, get additional info as quickly as a website and then click and watch. If you have cable or satellite you know how difficult slow it can be to scroll and search. The app makes it way easier and faster. Here is how it works:

I also have an EVO. If you run, walk or bike I highly recommend CardioTrainer. It uses the GPS to map your runs and records speed, elevation, time, calories, etc and uploads it to a website so you have a history of your progress. While you are running and listening to the playlist of your choice a voice comes over the music periodically and tells time, speed and distance. If you stop it automatically pauses and restarts when you resume running. It has race features, games and all kinds of stuff I haven't even tried yet. For me, this app alone was worth the price of the phone.

Yep... My Medical can be set up with password protection. Although it does have an "emergency" button for first responders but I'm not sure what that lets them see. I'll try it and report back!

Has anyone tried the new iPad exclusive "newspaper" The Daily? It is the product of Apple and conservative media titan Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. The app delivers a new issue of this news magazine, specifically designed for the iPad, every day for 99 cents a week or $40 a year. They offer a free 2 week trial so I checked it out. I have to say it is very well done. The Daily does an excellent job of blending a magazine format with Internet based content. It integrates video, photos and interactive maps that expand on the articles without being gimmicky. It is very easy to navigate, share articles via the major social networking sites or email content to friends. The user comments are wisely placed off the page so they are available but not distracting. The format is beautiful and well done.

The content appears to be somewhere between USA Today and Time magazine in terms of depth. I have only read a couple of issues and have not noticed a political bias but that may reveal itself as the magazine finds it's voice. It definitely leans more towards entertainment than hard news. They also include a daily crossword and Sudoku puzzles.

I am curious whether this new format will be successful, as The Daily is definitely a gamble. For one, people are accustom to getting their news on the Internet for free. Will they really pay for content, especially when The Daily includes advertisements, beautiful and stylish though they may be? Also how many people own iPads and of those how many people will subscribe? Additionally, with Google releasing their Honeycomb tablet OS to rave reviews and cool, new non-iPad tablets on the horizon, will The Daily attract and retain iPad customers or will The Daily establish itself on iPad and then become available on other tablets?

If you have an iPad you should check it out.

I've got an iPad and an iPhone 4.

Slacker (can cache 25 stations to play with no network connection)
Pandora
eBay
GIRL Radio
Facebook
Weatherbug (NOT a 'virus' like the PC version)
Amazon
Scruff (much better than Grindr)
Grindr
Shazam
Netflix
MapQuest (better navigation than the built-in maps)
Citrix (for connection to work - MS Office w/ Outlook, Remote Desktop, file storage, etc)
Google Voice

I have a mobile router and an aircard (similar to a My-fi) that I use when riding in the car or in places with no wi-fi.  It's much nicer than using an iPhone for extended periods and much more convenient than a notebook.

Apple report reveals grim truths behind gadgets

http://news.cnet.com/8301-27083_3-20032074-247.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0

Apple's just-released progress report on the labor-related practices of its overseas parts suppliers reveals grim truths behind the making of such popular gadgets as the iPad and iPhone--including worker poisonings, child labor violations, and 60-plus-hour work weeks.

The Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report, released just weeks after Apple logged record profits of $6 billion, marks the first time the company has officially acknowledged that 137 workers "suffered adverse health effects" at Wintek's Suzhou factory in China (which supplies parts to Apple and Nokia) because of exposure to n-hexane, a toxic chemical in cleaning agents....

The Apple report also reveals that only 32 percent of audited facilities comply with the company's maximum 60-hour, 6-day work week...

Apple's report finds that only 57 percent of facilities complied with Apple's code on preventing working injuries, and less than 70 percent met standards on air emissions; environmental permits and reporting; and managing hazardous substances. The report also acknowledges finding 91 children working at 10 facilities, though the nearly nine-fold jump from the previous year's findings of 11 children at 3 workplaces could be due to more robust facilities auditing...

Apple reports that it is "disturbed and deeply saddened" by the 13 suicides or attempted suicides at Foxconn Technology's Shenzhen factory over the course of five months. The first suicide involved a man who worked 286 hours the month prior, including 112 overtime hours (three times the legal limit), for about $1 an hour (including the higher overtime pay). That amounted to less than $300 over the course of the month--not quite enough to buy a 32GB iPhone 4.

After reading more issues of The Daily it has become clear that they have a definite bias to the right. They consistently slam Obama, are against the "selfish" protesters  in Wisconsin and, while they don't always criticize Democrats, they praise Republicans. The writers tend to be moderate on social issues and their reports on gay rights issues have generally been positive. I'm disappointed because they do have some interesting articles and I enjoy the format. I just wish they were more fair and balanced, and not in the Fox way.

Does Rupert Murdoch own any media outlet that's fair and balanced?

Take down the Apple report please.  I don't want to hear or see anything that tarnishes the image, or otherwise make me second guess a purchase from my beloved gadget-maker.  Thanks!

I've been playing with my friend's Iphone 4 to see how I like it.  I have to say I don't like it.  I'm glad I went with the EVO.  I like the bigger screen on the EVO.  The color on the EVO seems more brilliant to me.  His color almost seems black and white at times--just plain dull.  I like the features better on the EVO.  The idea of having my IPOD and phone all in one sounds nice.  But, I think about all the times we have the IPOD playing while doing work around the house.  For me to use my phone, I would have to stop the music in order to use it.

I've been frustrated with my IPOD anyway.  Unless something has changed, you can only have one ITunes library per device--you can't (or couldn't) sync more than one device to one library.  They made it so hard to manage and operate.  If you changed computers regularly, they use to only give you up to 5 computers to transfer your Itunes library to.  Not sure if that has changed.  My Itunes library got deleted once due to a virus or something.  I would have thought it would have been easy to transfer all my music/videos from my IPOD back to Itunes.  WRONG!  I had to buy a book that instructed you how to do it.  It took hours to get it accomplished.  This has happened again with my Itunes library.  I don't know why.  I'm going to have to get that book back out to figure out how to transfer again.  Apple told me this was due to only having a license to transfer one way due to copyright issues.  They said those rules have changed, however.  One rep told me to just burn all my CDs again and start over.  Well, that process took hours with over 2,500 songs when I first did it.

So, I'm wondering what I'm missing and why so many seem to love the Iphone--why it gets so much attention and praise?  What does it do that the EVO can't do, for example?  And, is there now a quick and easy way to transfer music from your IPOD back to Itunes?  I pulled up Itunes to see if they added a feature to do that, but didn't see one.  I have no idea why my library just disappeared again.  I hate the idea of having to go the jerry-rigged route to transfer the music back.  If you've ever done this, you know it is very complicated and time consuming.

Ted,

The iPhone 4's display, the last time I read, was rated the highest.  I often have to turn the brightness down.  Perhaps your friend's phone had the brightness turned down.  From my observation, the iPhone is 'smoother'.  By that I mean that it has a more integrated, consistent interface.  It's fast, got great battery life, easy to use, etc.  I don't think I'd want to carry around a phone that's any larger in my pocket, anyway.  That you'd have to stop playing music in order to use your phone is pretty obvious, but that's true of any phone / media player.  Our home cordless phones have Bluetooth and work with an iPhone.  Basically, we can answer the land line or iPhones from the cordless phones.  Perhaps that would keep one from having to stop music to answer; I'll have to try it.

The fact that iPhones aren't 'open' like Androids is both good and bad.  It can sometimes limit the apps that can be installed on the phone, but it does tend to weed out the bad ones (unstable, insecure, viruses, etc).  I don't particularly like iTunes, but I deal with it.  You actually don't have to sync the phone to put music on it; I can plug my iDevices into any system with iTunes and drag mp3's from a Windows Explorer window to the device.  I just can't sync the library.  That's no deal for me, as the 140,000 mp3's that I have wouldn't all fit there, anyway!

AFAIK of the Sprint 4G phones the Samsung Epic is closest to the Iphone 4's as it's a Super AMOLED, and the EVO is not.

Phones are evolving so quickly it is difficult to even keep up, e.g. 3D cameras in a phone.

I just found a new app that is really useful. It is called Fring and it is basically like Skype but has the advantage of working on my partner's iPad and my EVO phone. So now he can call me on my phone from anywhere in the world for free. If he gets an iPad with a camera we could have video chats too. We used to use Skype to communicate but we both had to be sitting at computers and have the Skype app running.

I went for an android phone - the Sony Ericsson Xperia.
I pretty much have the standard range of apps installed - newspapers, transport info, weather, banking, social media etc. Google Sky Map is cool and Track Finder as I'm terrible when it comes to knowing what song is playing. Map my run is a good exercise/training tool.

My question probably got lost in my long-ass post, so I thought I'd ask it again.

Does anyone know an easy way to transfer music from your Ipod back to your ITunes library?  I mentioned how this is the 2nd time my library just disappeared.  When I transfered my music from my Ipod back to Itunes before, I had to buy a book that instructed you how to do it the jerry-rigged way.  It was an ordeal.  Apple told me they didn't provide an easy way to do this, because of copyright issues--could only transfer one way.  However, they told me that rule had changed.

When I go to ITunes, I do not see where they've added a way to do this.  Do you still have to go the jerry-rigged route?  The jerry-rigged route is so time-consuming and difficult that I haven't done it yet.  So, I have all my music on my Ipod; however, I cannot add any more music to it.  When I connect it to Itunes, it asks me whether I want to start a new library, which will delete everything on my Ipod.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Attention horny geeks!

Grindr now available on Android phones

http://chicago.gopride.com/news/article.cfm/articleid/17047924/5602

Los Angeles, CA ó Grindr, the popular all male location-based social netoworking app, is out today with an Android version after PinkNews.co.uk revealed a leaked final test version on Monday.

The LA-based company hopes the Android release will help expand its 1.65 million male user base who already uses the iPhone and Blackberry apps. Grindr claims users in 180 countries with London being the most popular location.

Grindr for Android is compatible with devices running Android OS 2.1. A premium version, which removes banner ads and load more guys, is free for a trial and available for $4.97 a month.

The service averages 3,000 new users a day.

With all the new Android subscribers this should really broaden the pool for existing Apple and Blackberry users.

But this does not interface with the Grindr users on Iphones right?  Same application but two different "pools" as it were.

In my experience, Grindr kinda sucks.  I've found Scruff to be much better in terms of usability, interface, users (the most important part), etc.  If one's into apps like Grindr, I'd suggest checking out Scruff, too.

From the Grindr website:

Grindr users can view profiles, stats, and photos, and start chatting with guys using Grindr on any supported platform -- Android, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or BlackBerry.

They claim to have 1.5 million members worldwide.

My best friend moved back in with me and he is on Grindr, Jack'd, and Scruff.  The people on Scruff told him he wasn't "Bear" enough for them.  He actually said he may photoshop some hair on his chest..lol.  It is non-stop with all 3.  I think he has a problem.  All his communications are with people on the phone instead of real-life people.  It is literally all day long.  He even put Jack'd on my Android, so he could create another account.  If he learns Grindr is now available on Android, he'll probably want to create an account on mine.

The battery on the Iphone 4 must be very good, because he can use all those applications all day long without having to charge.  I know Jack'd showed both users on Android and Iphone, because I used it to see how far away he was.  Then, I used to see if he was signed on when he said he was going to bed.  Sure enough, he was.  So, I would assume Iphone and Android users could connect on Grindr.

Probably one of those time-waster types -- you know, in a "monogamous" relationship yet gets their cheap jollies off of chatting up horny guys on line with no intention of ever following through.  Such types need to get off the pot and go jerk off to some porn and leave the singles scene to the singles.

I thought so too, but I do think many are just on to talk dirty.  My friend is goodlooking, so he is perplexed why most do not want to actually meet.  He says guys will talk all dirty and about what they will do to each other, but then the guys will say they have to pick up grandma or some other story.  Looking through the pix, I've never seen so many hot guys with muscles.  I just don't believe it.  I think people are posting fake pix---Newsflash.  It seems nothing has changed since old-school AOL days in the 90's.  Many only wanted to talk, but never meet.

LOL. That totally cracks me up!

Then it is basically like the other online services. I thought Grindr had a proximity locator so it would notify you when someone within a certain range wanted to have sex, you hooked up and went about your business.  I didn't think a lot of chit chat was involved-- kind of the online equivently of a tea room.

I was waiting for this..lol.  It really is my friend, but I'm not above looking through the profiles and pix.  It is interesting to see how many guys are looking for sex within a couple miles of me.  I've been surprised by the number, since I live in the suburbs.  The gays are everywhere.

I was looking at the comments for the Android Grindr.  Everyone had only bad things to say---"buggy"--whatever that means, deletes their profiles, won't show profiles and pix, force closes, etc.  It seems they have work to do for the Android version.

A man uses his Iphone to broadcast video onto different Times Square video screens.  It seems like this would have made news.  And, it seems he would have drawn attention with the big balloon he uses in the heart of Times Square.  If real, I can imagine people using this to take over screens at airports, concerts, political events, etc.  They would have to make the technology to be used from far away, because he had to be right next to the screens.

Still waiting for my smoking new macbook pro....
They are taking their sweetass time shipping. But maybe that means less labour exploitation connected.  Probably not.
There don't seem too many possibilities for morally clean purchases.  I guess food from the farmer's market fits the bill.  Even there one could probably come up with some kind of moral or political conundrum if one were a real party pooper.

I like old mass produced thingies from thrift-shops.  If a thing was produced in some evil or compromised way, maybe the thing itself can redeem itself, over time.

I would have bought this fox stole (two heads, two tails, but only 4 paws) the other day, except it was pricey at 25 bucks!  I briefly did consider the possibly gross conditions in which it might have been produced, 50 years ago, but finally it was the price combined with the uselessness of the stole that dissuaded me.

And another way of looking at a compromised object or place, is that the "true" history adds interest.

Specifically man-made places, buildings, of great achievement and beauty. Often very skanky construction histories.  For example, palaces.

I got my new macbook pro.  With the HD screen.

Its pretty fab -- except it seems I am stuck with the downsize of HD screens for aging eyes. All the texts and buttons are so freaking small.  And if I understand correctly, theres no way to permanently increase the size of menu texts.

I can manually increase font size on websites and within other apps, but a lot of stuff still remains small and some things seem difficult or impossible to enlarge.

But movies look sublime and it deals with many many apps running at same time.

If you are music fan you will want to check out Amazon's new Music Locker. It is a service where you can upload all your music to their server and then stream it to any PC/Mac or Android phone. You get 5 GB for free, 2O GB free for a year if you buy just 1 mp3 album from Amazon or you can pay for additional storage. For people, like myself, who have multiple devices-- phone, home PC, work PC, etc-- this is great because you don't have to worry about which device the song is on. Plus your songs are backed up on Amazon's server in case your house burns down. It doesn't work on iPhone/iPad and probably never will because Apple is developing the same type of service. I have tried it and it works great.
