dayumm that's messed up --- I'm sure that the pharmacy has a policy against that -- one because of HIPAA privacy laws and two because of the risk of you not receiving them and them being out the meds (and your med paying source not being too happy).

The delivery person probably thought they were doing you a favor by leaving them (if you weren't home) or they didn't want to have to make a second trip - but BIG MISTAKE.  Also, leaving a note like that in the bag --- uh uh....

I would have been pissed also - and I would definitely let them know not to do it again.  I usually give my delivery person my cell number so they can call within an hour or so of coming to make sure I will be home.

My mail order pharmacy requires a signature for my meds.  However, it has nothing to do with HIPPA, it has to do with the cost of the drugs.  I can tell them to waive the signature requirement when they send, but they told me if I do that and something happens to the shipment, I will have to pay full price to replace them.

So -- it's not really about privacy at all.  Hell, the mail my Valtrex through the post office and it ends up in my mailbox.

I would definitely let your pharmacy provider know -- if they paid for a "signature required", they probably want to know that they aren't getting what they paid for -- not to mention the fact that if the drugs had disappeared UPS or FedEX would have paying for new ones.

It is about HIPAA when they leave them out in the open unsecured and when they put a note in them that says what the medical condition is that they are being sent for that can be accessed by anyone.  Even if meds are sent through the mail they don't have a big label on them saying ATRIPLA and the courier doesn't know what meds are in the box.

I work for a large healthcare system and deal with HIPAA policies and law almost daily  -- it is definitely a violation of HIPAA and if it is a reputable pharmaacy I guarantee that they will not be happy that the meds were left out in the open and that the note was left in the bag with meds left out in open --  in addition to the cost factor.

I also have to sign for mine to verify I received them.

it wasn't my delivery person. it was a delivery agency, like FedEx (GSO). in the delivery instructions above the signature it said okay to deliver if no one is home. i was under the impression that controlled substances had to be signed for. and last time a driver for the pharmacy actually brought it out.

Sounds like whoever filled out the instruction form from the pharmacy for the delivery agency messed up - they should have checked that it needed a signature - because of the potential for loss and to ensure they were received.  I know that the FedEx and UPS forms all have a box that has to be checked (same as what you had on your delivery slip) --- so the person that filled out the form probably forgot to check it or wasn't thinking when they filled it out.

My State ADAP meds come form Santa Fe via UPS, and sometimes they leave them inside my patio area
that's fenced in and locked if I'm not home, but, it has nothing on the front package that says anything
about AIDS/HIV, and besides, the UPS guy has very nice furry legs in his brown UPS shorts, he knows what
they are , and he's so friendly, he even waits for me to take out the meds, and give him back the empty cooler after I place the return-label on it, now that's what I call SERVICE w/ a smile  ;D

I can't understand why they put what the meds were for anyone to see.  My best friend, who use to live with me, still has his VA meds sent here--non HIV.  They come U.S. mail.  They just put them in the mailbox.  When he gets controlled substances, someone has to sign for them.

I know UPS will deliver a $2,000 computer and just leave it on the porch.  They don't even ring the door bell.  I think they believe it is more efficient to just leave stuff instead of waiting for someone to come to the door--if they do at all.  If it is stolen, I guess they think it is cheaper to replace it than slowing down their carriers.  Fed-Ex, on the other hand, will not leave anything for me.  I had to go all the way to their office just to pick up a letter.

I've been wondering how I will get my meds when I start.  I was first told by mail, then something different.  Thanks for this info as I will make sure I know how they come and how they are labeled.  I mean, things have accidently been left at my neighbor's house before.  As has been said, maybe the carrier thought you might need them ASAP.  I still can't figure out the purpose of putting what the meds are.  There is no need for that.

He said the note was INSIDE the box.

Quite honestly, I can't see why everyone is so upset about this.  I'm not hearing people complaining about potential theft, rather that these are HIV meds and should be handled differently.   People don't have xray vision to see throught the package at what is inside - in fact, I'm pretty sure a driver isn't going to know what's inside either (unless he has nice furry legs and you tell him...  ;) ).  Personally, I hate the fact that I have to be here to sign for it.  It means either working from home that day (which is very unproductive for me) or driving 30 mins away to the UPS warehouse to pick them up.

Thankfully, my insurance is changing my home delivery pharmacy from Aetna to Caremark.  Next year, I can have them deliver my drugs to my local CVS, just 1/2 mile from my house.

My meds are delivered to the mailbox and have been for pretty much all four years I've been on them (two different mail order drug plans).  Only time I've had to sign for them was when I was on the Norvir gelcaps that needed refrigeration.

Well I've only just started collecting my Atripla, but the pharmacy my doc set me up with is a mail order place as well.  They seem to be very efficient, they call my cell phone and discretely make sure I can talk before asking me questions...  (Which is very nice of them!)  If I don't answer they leave a very generic message asking me to call them back.
They always call the day before they ship to make sure I know it's coming and also verify that it's OK to leave at the front door.
I assume they get online tracking information because they call again the next day to let me know it was delivered and did I get it yet.
They ship the bottle in a plain package, even their name (in the sender's information on the outside of the package) is shortened to just the first letter of each word so there is no indication that it is anything medical related from the outside.
Personally I love the fact that they do all of the work and drop it at the door, less for me to worried about!  But then again I live in the country and my closets neighbor is 1/4 mile walk so I'm not really worried that someone will steal my drugs!   ;D

16 yrs ago in OH UPS left the package of meds on my doorstep
16 yrs later in SC UPS leaves the package of meds on my doorstep

(it's been that way with nearly everything that UPS has ever delivered to me in either state, meds or otherwise ;) That's how I got my new mp3 player delivered from Coke just a few days after redeeming some points a few weeks ago )

when I had liquid or gelcap norvir, it came packaged with freezer packs in insulated mylar bags. (I don't miss those gelcaps but I miss the silver bags. Slap a bow on it and it makes instant gift wrapping) Although the words "HIV" or "AIDS" might have been on the packing slip or information on the inside, the only markings on the outside of the brown cardboard boxes have been the UPS shipping labels and the pharmacy's return address label.

I had to pick up meds from my local pharmacy for a few yrs (rather than meds being run through a state pharmacy, the state changed the plan, paid my medicaid spend down amt so I was able to get my prescriptions using my medicaid card at the pharmacy of my choosing). Although it was only 7 blocks away and I rode my bike there, they were almost always out of something (usually the norvir), so I learned to turn in my scripts/refills one day and go back to pick them up the next day.

ROFLMAO I was a courier (for a state delivery company) for about 5 yrs in the early to mid 90s and I saw a lot of wild stuff when people answered their doors. :o

Sadly the UPS driver that comes here is a nice young lady. However, after catching me out mowing the lawn in my speedos one time, the big hunky FedEx guy, after the delivering a package to the front porch several times, has come to the backyard to tell me about the package while I've been out in the pool or lying on the deck reading. I definitely need to get more things delivered by FedEx ;) and sunbathe in the nude 8)

Boy that would be a lot of pills and a lot of money! :o I think insurance companies in the US keep the normal prescription amount limited to 30 days for most drugs (with a few up to a 90-day supply).

Indeed. For sensible, virally stable people only this. It saves our socialised health system* money cos it's less bloods, less doctor#s charge and less pharmacy costs.

For the last 2 years, my meds have been left on my porch by Fed Ex. I have never had an issue. Really quite convenient. They are always in an anonymous Fed Ex box or bag. There is never any name of a pharmacy on the outside. There is only an address.

Mike

Yes, it was brought to my attention via PM that I had not read the post correctly.  The HIV stuff being written inside is obviously quite different.

I believe it depends on the sponsor of the health insurance.  Most employer health plans started encouraging 90 day mail order supplies for prescription drugs back in the 90's.  Medco -- the largest of the US PBM's (pharmacy benefit managers) now has a very sophistcated system to track prescriptions from local drug stores that are monthly and reach out to plan members to convert those drugs into 90 day mail order prescriptions.

i would imagine some prescription time-lengths are limited by the med too (shelf-life and physical type). For example, I sure wouldn't want to have to care for a 6 month supply of Norvir gelcaps. It's bad enough to have one bottle full get overheated and turn into mush. It'd be terrible to risk half a year's supply melting down. I would guess that other refrigerated meds and meds with short shelf-lives aren't prescribed for long time spans either.

I have to get my meds via mail and at a 90 day supply.  I've built up a "resevoir" of about 7 months (some more, some less).  This includes the Norvir gelcaps.  Keeping them in the refrigerator leaves no risk of a "meltdown".  I like the peace of mind that having an excess supply brings me -- in case something were to happen to my job / insurance, etc.

i was trying to post this at 3:15am but was getting error msgs.

Having been born and reared in Charlotte for the first 25 yrs of my life, I couldn't agree more. My PM to D, rather than keep rambling here off topic ;), was:
Quote
Lordy, it's worse! :o I'm in South Carolina!
where everything but being Baptist and praising the Lord is frowned upon

but taking up for myself, I need to explain that I just barely live in SC. Right near the crossing of Tyron and Steele Creek Rd (in Charlotte), if you take a left at the sign for the state line you will go down the road to my house. The Charlotte city limit is about 500 ft away, just behind the neighbor's house across the street. So though I live in SC, I could throw a rock and have it land in Charlotte, so I'm not that much of a South Carolinian nor a country boy, thank goodness. Though I do pay way less in taxes just over on this side of the line.  ;) :D

LOL yeppers, SC roads are crappy because they never get repaved. ;) but Ohio roads are full of potholes from the salt spread during all that snow, along with the freeze and thaw periods. It seems no matter what state I'm in the roads suck ;D
