weirdness, munchies & meds
« on: September 27, 2010, 09:49:18 PM »
i smoked a bowl or 4 yesterday. had a killer case of the munchies. i practically ate myself to sleep. i waited 2 hours before taking my meds (actually closer to 3 cause i passed out) but i was still kinda full. when i woke up this morning i felt loopy as all hell. i wasn't able to shake the feeling until well into the afternoon. i felt discombobulated and everything seemed kinda distant (i'm still happy with these feelings if they are side effects, i've seen much worse). i just don't know if the food had anything to do with this. every other time i've taken the meds i've had an empty stomach. this time i just waited a few hours but i was still pretty gorged.

any practical advise? also, can i still take atripla like 6 hours later than normal? i will ask my pharmacist when she returns. i haven't done this yet but ive heard people talking about med half lives and whatnot.

best,
d

Atripla should be taken on an empty stomach. I'm not sure if taking it straight after a major nosebag can exacerbate side effects or just affects absorption.

Eating affects only the side effects of Atripla.  It magnifies the side effects, but the med itself is unaffected.  I have no idea how or why this process worked, but when I was new to it I asked my doctor if it would cause the medicine to become ineffective.  He said in no uncertain terms, no way, no how.

I am pretty sure that what happens when you take Atripla with food is that you absorb MORE of the drug.  This doesn't hurt you, per se, but can intensify any side effects, because you have more of the drug in your system.  This is particularly true with high fat foods -- the kind that I've "heard" is what one wants to eat when high.....

I can tell you from experience that taking Atripla with a Krispy Kreme or two will definitely make one feel drunk.

Mike

edited to add:  taking Atripla 6 hrs later than normal should be no problem at all.  Whenever I travel I've been told by my doc that I should just take it at the usual hour in my new time zone -- i.e. I take it between 8 and 10 pm -- no adjustments for time zone.
