Please Prayers/Thoughts for my Beautiful Mother
« on: September 26, 2010, 04:40:50 PM »

I took my mom to the hospital yesterday because she was having problems breathing, We've done this routine before as she gets bronchitis quite often. This morning after a doctor reviewed the  CAT scan my mother and I were told that she has a malignant mass in/on her lung. They will be unable to remove it due to where it is, it is on the outside of the lung surrounding the main Lung Bronchial passage". The Doctor "might" consider removing that lung, however her decreased lung function in the other would probably not support life. The other option is Chemo/Radiation, which she absolutely does not want to do. It appears it is fast moving as nothing showed up approx 9 mos ago.

It seems it's very grim, I am in shock, I dont know what to do, I am so overwhlemed. I try to keep a happy face on and cut up with her which makes her laugh, but I'm dying inside, Im her only child, Im a mommas boy.

I'm keeping up hope, but at the same time I'm not blind to the reality here.

Please send prayers or good thoughts or vibes to my Dear Mother Dorothy.

-Will

Hey Will -
I will keep you both in my thoughts - and will be sending good energy your way as well.

Is there a reason she doesn't want chemo/radiation?  My mother is a two time breast cancer survivor - first bout they did radiation; second bout, 15 years later, they did a mastectomy and chemo.  She tolerated the chemo extremely well - some fatigue - but the meds they use now to counteract the side effects kept most of them in check.  She did lose the hair - but nothing a wig didn't take care of until it grew back (she kind of looked like the baby new year with the baldie look) -- but all and all she came out of it great and has just started having reconstructive surgey procedures done.

So far - about 4 years cancer free.

Just was wondering if your mom had specific reasons for avoiding chemo.

Once again, the very best to your mother and to you during this rough time.

Will, I'm so sorry to hear this.  My own mum died from lung cancer 3 years ago.  I hope she can stay as pain-free as is possible, whatever she decides to do.  I'll be thinking about you guys.

Dear Willy, I am so sorry that your beloved mom is going through a very difficult time, she is fortunate to have such a loving son.  I am also an only child and I just saw my mother this weekend and seeing how age has taken such a toll is very sad.

Hugs to Will and Dorothy.

Thanks to each and every one of you for the thoughts, it means the world to me, yall are pretty much all I ahve for support in this.

@Phil - The reason she doesnt want Chemo is she just wants quality of life, She's had several friends who have been on Chemo and it was horrific and in the end they died anyways. I think she has just given up, she told the Doctor "No one can live for ever", and "Ive had a good life" but Christ she's only 65.
I told her everyone reacts differently to Chemo/Radiation, and it is possible she will do well on it (maybe Im kidding myself and her).  I asked her to please try it out and if its unbearable we can stop, maybe Im being selfish, but I think she may go along with my wish in that respect. I will relay the story of your mother to her Phil, thanks.

Thanks again all, I am headed up to see her now

Hi Will -
I will continue to keep her and you in my thoughts -
BTW - my mother had her chemo when she was 61 - they gave her some type of drug with it that took away any nausea.  While she was getting chemo, she was still going to their community bingo games every Monday and taking the bus trips to the casino every couple of weeks with her friends from her and my dad's adult living community.

Ultimately, it treatment is an individual decision - but hopefully she will at least discuss with the docs the advances that have been made in chemo/radiation and the advances in reducing the side effects.

Oh Will...I'm sorry your mom is going through all this.  I will keep Dorothy in my thoughts and prayers.  I sure hope she doesn't throw in the towel and decided to give the treatment a try.  I understand that she feels she's lived a good life, but there's always life to be lived.

My Grandfather has bladder cancer.  They've given him all the treatment options that are available and his cancer remains.  He's still kicking around at 84, refusing to let this take him easily.  He still hunts, drives and take his lady friend out to dance.  Quality of life is what you make it.

I will keep thinking of her and you during this time.

Hugs
Katie

Will,

I said a prayer for you and your Mom this morning (and will say a few more).  I can understand that quality of life is important to your mother, and that cancer evokes images of people suffering with the side-effects of treatments.  But treatments have improved over the years, and there is the potential benefit that the cancer could be eradicated.  It's not easy to talk with people about this -- let alone a parent -- but I hope you continue to do so.

Hugs,

Henry

Thanks Henry and all of you.

Update.

Mom came home today. I just got her settled and tucked in the bed. Of course I will be here with her for the near future .She is on oxygen which is taking a little bit to get used to , cords and all. She will have a PET scan in the next couple of days, at which point we will really know what the course of action is.
So i'm getting a little stronger (what doesnt kill us makes us stronger). The panic has somehwat subsided because I know she is not going to die tomorrow, or even next week. The doctor made it clear to me in a private meting that the outlook is pretty grim, even with Chemo/radiation, and really all it is going to do is extend her life for a few months, maybe up to a year. But I'll take it.

Btw, she is now totally onboard with the Chemo/radiation, the doc confirmed that things are much better now days in regards to controlling the side effects, although it is still no walk in the park.

So there is no "reverse" on this. The only way through it is forward. I am grateful for one thing (we have to look for the good), I will have the ability to say goodbye to my mother, which I didnt ahve with my dad (if only I could have another 5 mintues with him), so for me and mom, it's kinda like "The long Goodbye", and again for that I am very grateful.

Love and hugs to all, Hopefully I can get back in here in the next couple of days, I miss cavorting with you all!

-Will

Will -
I'm so sorry that your mom and you have to go through this --- but I am glad that you are able to be there for her.

I'm also glad to hear that she reconsidered on the chemo/radiation.

I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers and send positive energy your way.
