Did Moses Part The Red Sea Or Just Nature?
« on: September 23, 2010, 01:06:13 AM »
A researcher says he has an explanation of how the sea was parted and allowed people to walk to the other side.  The report includes his research and animation of how it is possible.  I saw good 'ol Sherrie Shephard on The View today and she was pissed.  She, of course, believes in the Bible literally.

Yay! Maybe they can find a means by which HIV was transmitted via oral sex, so that our forum can erupt similarly.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Everyone knows it was Robert Moses who parted the Red Sea, building fabulous beaches, parkways and art deco water amphitheatres.

LOL, I wished I could have seen her throw a hissy over that, I'm sure it was cute. It's always fun to see Biblical literalists get backed into the corner any time something like this arises. IMHO, the Bible is for the most part a collection of tales that really werent meant to be taken so literally.

Jeeze, can't the fundies just say that Moses asked God to cause the wind to blow which created this "miracle"? Those fundies have no imagination. You'd think they'd have some idea how to turn this stuff to their advantage. Maybe they need me as an advisor.

I've read other scientifically based theories for this Biblical story. Although the scientific explanations may make it seem less  "miraculous" you can still argue that God controlled the series of events that allowed the Exodus to be possible. I would think that even if you believe something on faith having evidence that supports the event actually happened would lend credibility to the story as a whole.

I agree GSO -
There are actually a lot of parts of The Bible that are supported by science and vice versa.  They would be much more detailed then to go into here.  However, even when looking at Genesis and the formation of Earth, the account can actually be supported by science and supports science.

Also, The Bible has the shape of the Earth right before even scientists did --- if you look into it you will see that The Bible talks about the sphere of the Earth -- this was put down when scientists still were thinking that the Earth was flat and that everything rotated around the Earth.

The Bible also says that a year to man is equal to 1,000 years to God -- this would explain a lot of the carbon dating finding rocks, etc. that are aged over a million years old - where "literal" Bible interpretations would have the Earth be a little over 6,000 years old -- (take 6,000 yrs X 365 days x 1,000 years per day = 2,190,000,000) - Science generally agrees that the Earth and rest of the solar system is about 4.55 billion years old (http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-age-of-earth.html) Figuring that the Earth would have been formed after solar system was in place - 2.1 billion using calculations that can be derived from reading The Bible would be on target.

While I am not a Bible thumper - I do believe that there are is a lot of information that can be accounted for and could actually be supported by science (and vice versa) if the two would seem to exist on an adverserial relationship, but a supportive one.

Just my two cents (multiplied by 1,000, multiplied by....)  lol  :D  (Unscrupulous use of emoticon)

Just to add more interesting science/Bible supportive "factoids" to the mix....

The Bible talks about Eve being deceived by the serpent and the serpents punishment for doing this was having to crawl the rest of its days on its belly - because up to this point the snake walked on legs.

While this is a conservapedia citation/link supporting that the evolution of snakes supports that they used be like lizards and walked on legs - it still fits (and further support can be found by researching various scientific articles/journals):

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/680116.stm

http://www.conservapedia.com/Snake

http://www.animalaqua.com/evolution-snake/

Maybe more to come   ;)

I have all the answers you seek , Im just not ready to talk about it .

Jeff, does this statement have to do with them boys repeatedly screaming "Oh my god!" while they're in your bedroom?

I don't know but Moses and Charleton Heston look like they could be brothers.

Didn't they pretty much come to the understanding that it wasn't the Red Sea that was parted but the Reed Sea?  I thought that mistranslation idea became the accepted dogma for bible researchers anyway?

All of this ignores that there is not a single skerick of evidence that the Israelites were even in Egypt much less crossed any sea.

Yes they do; Moses left a pair of keks behind in a laundry basket. They're immortalised in some dusty museum on the Nile.

Oh God, really?

I mean, Spock came back to life in Star Trek 3, but because he was resurrected via protomatter, a known unstable element, why did he not self-destruct along with, or after the Genesis Planet?

The Star Trek myth makes more sense to me than the Bible. At least there aren't two origin stories, unless you count "Where No Man Has Gone Before" where Kirk's former best friend and now godlike enemy, Gary Marshall, creates a tombstone for him that reads "JAMES R. KIRK" instead of "JAMES T. KIRK," as Tiberious was established as Kirk's middle name.

Oh shit. My preferred fiction is as riddled with holes as everyone else's.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Hmm.  No jews went to Egypt?  I just had a very clever Tunisian student explain the whole exodus across North Africa, and the history of Carthage to boot.
