Time for another flu shot
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:15:18 PM »
It's that time again.  This year it looks like just one shot though (swine flu protection is included in the regular shot this year).

Figure I'll get one next week.

Here's this year's CDC poster for people  with "long term medical conditions"  (includes us)
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/risk/preventing_treating_flu.pdf

Looks like there is a new high dose version available, but only if you are over 65 and CDC is not recommending it even for that group -- just testing it.

Have you gotten a flu shot yet?

Does the vaccine start losing its effectiveness after a certain amount of time in the body?  I was planning to get it when I saw my doc in October.  I know many get the flu no matter the time of year with the big outbreaks between January and March??

I usually get mine in October.  What month are we generally suppose to get them in?  I got one last October along with the pig shot.  I should be good to go till October then, right?

Usually I get my flu shot from work but I haven't seen notices posted about it yet. I have an appointment at the VA on the 13th.  If they have it, I can get it there.

Does the vaccine start losing its effectiveness after a certain amount of time in the body?  I was planning to get it when I saw my doc in October.  I know many get the flu no matter the time of year with the big outbreaks between January and March??

It's not so much that the vaccine loses effectiveness against the strains that were going around as that the flu evolves into new versions.

"Why do I need to get a flu vaccine every year?
Flu viruses change from year to year, which means two things. First, you can get the flu more than once during your lifetime. The immunity (natural protection that develops against a disease after a person has had that disease) that is built up from having the flu caused by one flu virus strain doesn't always provide protection against newer strains of the flu. Second, a flu vaccine made against flu viruses going around last year may not protect against the newer viruses. That is why the flu vaccine is updated to include current viruses every year.

Because of these reasons, a new flu vaccine is needed each year."

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/vaccineeffect.htm

Oh, and

"When will flu activity begin and when will it peak?
The timing of flu is very unpredictable and can vary from season to season. Flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. in January or February. However, seasonal flu activity can occur as late as May. "

If your immune system is compromised there is no system to create antibodies, so when you actually get the virus your body still might not recognize it.  This is the same reason why say Hep A/B vaccines might not take.

I've gotten a flu shot every year since 1993, except that I can't remember if I got one in 1996...and that year I got a flu infection that almost killed me. Since then, I've only gotten a confirmed flu once (2002, and it was April; I always get the shot in September or October) so I always recommend it for everyone. Unless you've got the contraindications, go for it! A couple of years ago when the supply was short and my hospital couldn't get it until December, I went to my community center and told them I was in a risk group. They took a saliva sample and a fingerprint first but finally gave me the shot.

I've wondered whether I created a good response to my pneumonia vaccination, because it was given to me when my CD4 was 171--although it bounced back soon after.  I'm suppose to be checked next time to see if I've created a good response to the Heps.  Can they check you to see if you've created a good response to the flu or pneumonia vaccines?  I know there is debate about just how effective the pneumonia vaccine is anyway.

My brother got H1N1 last year and he said it was the worst thing ever.  It struck on the way to Florida and he thought several times he was going to have to go to the hospital.  Others have said they got it and no big deal.  So, I guess it affects everyone differently like most things.  I don't want it or the regular flu, so I'm getting my vaccination next time I'm at the doc.

willywump, I was diagnosed with depression when I was 13. My mom was in the hospital fighting for her life and I was sent to live with relatives in another state. How would you feel coming home from school and finding ur mom laying on the floor unresponsive? Then being told that she may not make it through the night, having to leave your life in NJ and start over in VA during adolescents (a time when hormones are unstable).  My aunt took me to see a doctor and he diagnosed me depressed. YA THINK! So if you think I need meds for depression for an event that happened 16 years ago, I feel very sorry for you.
As far as the untreated AIDS...While you're in the hospital with a mystery illness, I'm on vacation with my family.

Skeebo, no pneumonia shots for me. I already had hepB, so no need for that shot. I got a hepA shot in 2001 (that was before I knew better). So, you only get $7.50

Before you knew better than what exactly?

Oh please tell me you don't believe in vaccines at all that will be the icing on the cake of your denialism.

As far as the untreated AIDS...While you're in the hospital with a mystery illness, I'm on vacation with my family.

She's got you on that one Wumpy -- those AIDS drugs are what's killing you.  Maybe you should stop taking them.

willywump, I was diagnosed with depression when I was 13.

Ummm, scuse me. You're the one who said you are Manic Depressive (bi-polar), Untreated Bi-polar is never a good thing, regardless of what brought it on. But now you are saying you are only depressive, which is it? Untreated Manic/Depressive is a dangerous thing, untreated depression, while not good, is not as volatile as M.D

And frankly, Ill take my mystery illness any day over a family vacation with an untreated manic depressive, untreated AIDS family member. But that's just me.

Willywump:You are on disability for manic depression. How are you, who is living on welfare, tell me, who works everyday and support myself and my family, how to live? You are on so many meds for BP and still having episodes everyday? I had my last episode 16 years ago! So here I am paying your rent, your food, your meds. You have no right to tell me that how I live my life is wrong as long as you're having episodes, mysterious illnesses, living on disability, and smoking crack! Get a job, then I might have enough respect for you to listen to your criticisms.

First of all you need to get your facts correct before you shoot off your sorry mouth. I am not on disability, and I am not taking any meds for BP, I did at one time for something my doctor thought was BP, but was not.

Oh and by the way I dont smoke crack either.

Now that we got that straight, and since Im not on disability, ahving daily episodes or smoking crack, and your not paying my rent, buying my food and my meds, then I suppose with your reasoning I can in fact tell you how to live your life... Get your ass on HAART! and get back on BP meds as i think your are having an episode right now!

It seems you ahve this holier than thou attitude towards those who are on disability, you even mentioned it in your infamous youtube post reply, along with calling those on these forums all "oppresed and depressed" (but thats another thread). There are  many people who are rightfully on disability, some of them on here. Where do you get off coming in here and spreading your filth about us?

Arent you on vacation with your family? Shouldnt you be spending Quality time with your "kids" rather than making stupid remarks on here?

Etay, why did you say all those things about Will that aren't true?  When you post stuff that is incorrect, it hurts your credibility.  Now I wonder whether you're actually on HIV meds, up to date on all your vaccines, physicals, etc.  I don't know what to believe now.  After saying untrue things, maybe you're really the model HIV patient.

Yes I know.. the mods told us to be patience with him, he's just misguided, he's not, I repeat, NOT, a denialist, or perhaps just a "misguided" dissident.. whatever.

Yet all he ever does in our forums is to butt in whenever there are discussions about symptoms, OIs, etc and his posts, in essence, are always the same: I am not on meds, I have a CD4 count of two digits and yet I am as healthy if not healthier than someone who's not HIV+. If anything it seems he's even more careless about his health than a normal healthy person should be.

And he's active in denialist forums, has participated in denialist conferences and even brought in some of the most famous denialists through webcam to give talks to the HIV support group he runs in his church. And not to mention his (in)famous Youtube channel.

So what is he doing here? And is it surprising that he said what he said in his last post.. cos all along it's probably what he thinks of all of us. If the evidences don't march, he might as well make them up. Isn't that what denia.. sorry, dissidents, tend to do?

I agree - and at the risk of pissing off the mods - if anyone else spoke the way ETAY just did to another member, they would have a 7 day time out - if not more - quit damn coddling him and do that - maybe his true purpose of posting on here whether it be "good" or "bad" will come out.  What gives already?????

Absolutely.  I Think the mods need to get together and make a decision here, either on a timeout or a banning.  Let him take his crap elsewhere. This is BS

Etay, your time here has now come to an end. I thought you'd given up on the denialist forum, but you recently posted there... (August 30th)

Well mate, watch out for those buses. Good luck and goodbye. You are now permanently banned as a hopeless denialist.

Not true. Many of us have been warned, given time outs, and even banned. Fortunately, calmer heads eventually prevailed and those who contribute in a positive (no pun intended) way to the forums are allowed, even encouraged, sometimes begged to return.

To the best of my knowledge, this has never been the case with a denialist.

Very good, and I have confirmed that this year's flu vaccine includes protection against swine flu.  One shot does it all.

I got mine, and the pneumonia shot. Both free here in Oz for us HIVers.

I'm adding that to the list I'm making about the positives of being positive. So far it's a short list.

Flu shot and initiation

Hi,

This post reminded me to ask my doctor.

As other HIVers in this country, I will receive a free voucher for the flu shot (which, here, will include H1N1)

Because I have some critical VL test down the road (virologic response being kind of slow), doc advised NOT to get that shot until after the VL/CD4 has been done

I am posting this as a reminder to those who have just initiated meds and are due for VL/CD4 in the near future

Cheers! Eric

Wow, interesting! I did not know that a flu shot could muck up other tests! Thanks for the info.

I will probably get mine at my next HIV appointment on the 26th, at the same time I get bloodwork done. But yeah, I keep thinking about it every time I walk into the drug store next door and see that it's free under my insurance.

The flu shot in the US also includes H1N!

And your doctor suggested you postpone protecting yourself from flu in order not to screw up a lab test?  Seriously?

Wouldn't it make more sense to postpone the lab work?  Or to have the blood draw and the flu shot in succession on the same day?  This doesn't make sense.

They should just give the flu shot after taking the lab work/vials for viral load.  This is silly.

This is what happens at my clinic on Hamthrax Vaccination Day. You have your bloods done and then you get stuck with the No More Flu.

Would have thought it was obvious.

And this happened to me on at least two occasions.  The blood was taken, and moments later, the flu shot was given to me at the doctors office. The same with the pneumonia booster.

There have also been times , where I have received the flu shot from work ( which is usually where I get it),  and had  blood tests done within  3 weeks. I would have to check my records for actual dates.  I have never had any ill effect having it done this way, BUT,  I was already undetectable at this point, prior to the flu shot.

Also wanted to add, that I have had the flu shot given to me , when my t-cells were less than 150.  Although, I don't know how effective the shot was.  But, knock on wood, I haven't had the flu either, especially in those critical times back in 2003 through 2004.

Yes... We are monitoring VL a bit more closely than usual as resistance is suspected. Resistance, is, in my humble opinion a much more serious problem than the flu

My note is meant for people who are at the early stage of meds, where monitoring is a tiny bit more important.

Yes, I does make sense to do the flu shot AFTER the blood work. It happens that, here, HIVers receive a voucher mailed by our socialized medical system, simply go to any pharmacists, get they vaccine for free, go to any nurse, get the shot for free, without passing through the HIV clinic supervision.

These are 2 separate routes.

Which is why I go a bit suspicious, checked with my doctor and shared his recommendation (Blood work FIRST, then Flu shot) with those readers who might be in the same situation as I (not yet UD, etc.). I guess for most people (UDs) it does not matter.

Cheers

Has anyone noticed they feel kinda bad (fatigue, etc) after getting vaccinations?  After I got the H1N1 and the heps vaccines, I felt kinda bad each time for about a week.  I just felt tired and like I was about to get sick.  I also remember both times getting ringing in the ears or those strange pressure changes in the ear where it seems like you hearing decreases for a few minutes.  It may have just been all in my head, though.  The mind is very powerful.

I was planning to get my flu shot at my next appt in October.  However, we are suppose to take a trip the following week, so I'm thinking about just getting it now so I don't have to worry about any perceived or real side-effects.  Don't get me wrong, I know they have a very good safety profile and I'm totally for vaccinations.

No problems here.  No more fatigue now than prior to the flu shot I got on Friday. Vaccinations of any sort, never bothered me. Tenderness around the injection site, depends on who gives them, and how tense a person is, when receiving it.

A far as ringing in the ears, I've had that for 7 years. I have tinnitus, that started shortly after starting meds.

I think some people do tend to have minor reactions to the flu shot.  If you've noticed this in yourself it makes perfect sense to try to time the shot around your schedule.  So...go for it!

An online doc recently gave out this link about vaccinations.  It is from 1998.  Is this info outdated now?  I was surprised there was no ringing endorsement for the flu vaccine.  They said many of us don't create a good response (if I read it correctly).  The report did say it is probably still a good idea, because flu can lead to other respiratory illnesses and HIVers are at higher risk for those.

On that note, I was really surprised by the figure about HIVers and bacterial pneumonia.  I knew we had a higher rate, but I didn't know it was that high.  I was also surprised by the statement that there was no need, really, to have titers checked after getting the Heps.  It was also saying that the Hep A vaccine may not be warranted unless you have sex with men or travel to certain areas.  It also said there isn't much safety info on the Hep A vaccine.

Did I read all this correctly and is this info still valid 12 years after it was written?

Got mine on the 5th.

I never get labs done at the doctor's office. They are done a few weeks ahead of the doctor visit so we can discuss the results.

I got my flu shot last weekend at Walmart.  I almost had to clock some 87 year old lady for my seat but I got it!!  She even tried to pull out the "I have a walker" sympathy trick.  The nerve of the one yellow toothed woman.  Sheeez.
