Preventive Treatment

(1/1)

rsvljedi:
My HIV- girlfriend has asked me to find out about a med being
used for HIV treatment that has entered a testing phase for HIV
prevention.
Around the first of the year in 2006, I had read about a current
treatment which was showing promise as a preventative med in
testing. Shortly after I mentioned this to her, she also heard a brief
story about it on the radio.
She has recently asked me what the med was and for the life of me
I cannot remember the name of the med. She is wanting to talk to
her insurance about it, although I am afriad she is going to be
disappointed with their response.
Does anyone else recall this story and the name of the medication
that was used? I seem to remember they were beginning human
testing on a fairly large scale when the story came out.

trellium:
They are Viread (tenofovir) and Truvada (tenofovir + emtricitabine)

Practicing safe sex is still her best bet for now

Here is an article on cnn.com about the spotlight on prevention especially for women

and another about the results from an early clinical trial that investigated the potential use of tenofovir and Gilead's combination pill Truvada as pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV transmission
