Meet Mike "Speed Bump" Alessi....
« on: June 26, 2010, 12:46:49 AM »

Came across this video the other day.  This kid is one of the current motocross stars and is really fast, but has a ton of bad luck.  In the video it shows one of the things he is known for and that's good starts, you'll hear the commentators using the term "holeshot" in the highlights.  The other thing he is known for is the brutal crash that takes place at the end of the video.  If you have a weak stomach don't watch it.

I was thinking to myself - "those crashes are just pussy-beer compared to the crashes that happen during the TT." Then I saw that last crash. Then I started wondering, WTF? Did he actually survive that?

Hmph. All he got was two broken shoulder blades, a broken rib, bruised lung and a concussion. (can you believe it?)

Riders who crash during a TT race risk being splattered along stone walls. Every year a few riders die. Many more are injured.

So yeah, the crashes in that video are just so much pussy-beer. :)

That's cuz you don't pay attention over in Am I. There were a bunch of guys on a night out. One of them fingered some woman, then stuck his juicy finger in his mate's beer. His mate came to us crying because he was sure he was infected after he drank the so-called pussy-beer. Cool, eh?

TT racing is on the street, just plain crazy.   I know they have a huge event on the Isle of Man.  We've lost several riders this year to death.  The saddest one that comes to mind is 14 year old Jesse Masterpool.  He died in April after tangling with another rider.  The other rider ended up landing in a nearby lake and everyone's attention was on getting him out of the water.  Unknown to everyone, Jesse laid on the track without oxygen for 6 minutes.  Once everyone realised another rider was still down it was too late.

We have two motorcycle road-racing events here every summer. The TT is two weeks over late May, early June, and the Grand Prix is one week, usually in late August, sometimes early September.

And yeah, those guys (and the odd gal) are nuts in the extreme. Not only do some of the competitors go home in a box, but every year a few spectators do too. They like to get out on the roads and emulate their TT/Grand Prix heros. Idiots.

There are usually fewer fatalities and injuries to the spectators during Grand Prix because for some reason, the Grand Prix seems to attract an older, more sedate crowd. Dunno why.

It's kinda cool though, because for three weeks of every summer there's plenty of British and European leather-clad eye-candy about the place. :)

Oops, I was wrong - the Grand Prix is two weeks as well - one week of practice and one week of racing. Not sure why I was thinking it was only one week, I mean I've been here for 20 years now, you'd think I'd know. Sheesh.

That's pretty horrific.

They're pretty good here at getting injured riders off the road and into a helicopter to hospital here when there's a crash. There are marshals and EMT workers every so many meters around the course at all times during a race.

When spectators crash, they take their chances on how quickly they are helped, just like anyone else who crashes anywhere.

PS - Skeebs, make sure you check out the video at the bottom of the main Grand Prix website page. The whole of the Mountain Course is shown in a series of videos and it's the same course they use for the TT. http://www.manxgrandprix.org/CourseNotes/Main.html

I liked the videos from the riders perspective.  I've riden street bikes before, it amazes me the speed these guys can keep through the corners.  I tried it and almost went into a house, that lone experience has kept me off street bikes since.

I had the use of a Yamaha 500 (one-lung) in Ohio back in the summer of 1982 (or was it '83?) and I absolutely loved it. I used to take it out on this one country road where there used to be a railroad track at the crest of a hill. They'd taken the track out, but it left a funny bump. You could approach it from the steeper side and go flying way high into the air, and the road was so smooth the landing was never any trouble. I loved that hill.

During that summer I also had the opportunity to ride a Suzuki 750, but I much preferred the Yamaha. Much more manageable.

Oh, and I also had the use of a bike in 1984 in NYC, forget what make it was but it was a 1000 - or was it 1200? Too long ago. I used to take it up to the Bronx and Spanish Harlem to score some dime bags. Nobody messed with me when they saw me get off that monster of a bike.

I've contemplated getting a bike here, just because the roads are so fantastic for bikes. What worries me though is the other people on the roads. They're all nuts.

I liked the videos from the riders perspective.

Do you find yourself leaning with them? I do.

During the TT, they usually have a carnival on Douglas Prom during race week. There's usually a "ride" where you sit in this box with a huge video screen in front of you showing a video of the whole course. The box actually moves with the bike on the screen. If you don't have a bike, it's the closest you can get to actually riding the course yourself. It's pretty amazing.

i love riding my motorcycle, growing up I learned to do a few stunts.  I have decided for Tampa, to only have a small 250 everything else gets me in deep trouble.  I too find myself leaning with them when they hit those corners.  I have a younger brother is a motorcycle stunt rider, makes pretty good money at it too.  He rides the wall of death.  It is pretty scary, but fun as heck to watch. do U have dreds underneath that helmet?

it can be done while in motion but it's very tricky and not as spontaneous. it's a helluva lot safer and a lot more fun to wait till you're parked somewhere.

I'm just kidding really.  To be honest after meeting with my professor(he's a MD) last night I am glad I cut.  He is on the board that determines acceptance into the RN program and I don't think having a dreadlock sitting in front of him would have given the impression I wanted.  He's  a no-nonsense kinda guy and well... you know me, I'm full of nonsense.... ::)

sadly, appearance still does make a difference, so maybe the oily dred-ful incident was a blessing in disguise ;)
