Florida ADAP waiting list

(1/10) > >>

gregftl:
Beware to people thinking of moving down to Florida. I went in to pick up my hiv meds today at the ADAP pharmacy and was handed a paper stating that waiting lists will be initiated for new enrollees of ADAP and the ADAP formulary is also being cut. The Ryan White formulary however is staying the same. For those of us already enrolled in ADAP we are ok as long as we pick up our meds on time every month and re-enroll in ADAP in a timely manner every 6months. So one of the drugs I will no longer be able to get is Andro Gel. I've been getting it thru ADAP for 9 yrs now. But no more. Guess I'll have to pay for the cheaper shots which I absolutel hate. Around 120bucks for a 10ml vial of testosterone.

I know i've read other posts about problems with ADAP funding all over the country but my god Florida has like the 2nd or 3rd largest number of HIV cases in the country and I had thought funding was based on number of hiv cases each state has. If so, what the hell is florida doing with all the money they get from the federal government??? I always read about other much much smaller states having waiting lists but i never thought I'd see the day Florida would implement one. I notice from the lists of states with waiting lists.......neither California nor New York have waits. So what the f is going on in florida?

Also how about cutting illegal immigrants off the rolls or making them go to the back of the line for services?? One thing that has always really ticked me off down here is those of us here legally have to go in and do a song and dance to get enrolled in ADAP. Illegals just stroll in with a letter of support and get medical care thrown into their laps. Also how about cutting ADAP for those in prison that have been found guilty of heinous crimes?

You know one thing. I used to live in Chicago. We got our meds up there thru the mail. They have all these pharmacies here with all these workers that just basically stand around and pick their noses. If they want to save money here, for example, let's shut down the pharmacies.......get rid of all the workers and  get the meds thru the mail. I mean if they are short on funding and need to cut costs that's the first place I'd do it. And also how about we stop sending millions of dollars worth of medications over to Africa and start taking care of our own here in this country. Sorry but I'm sick and tired of the US having to hold the world's hand. It's about time other countries stepped to the plate and helped out.

And from what I've read it's all about politics as usual and who is afraid not to get elected this fall. So screw the people dying of AIDS just so you can hold that precious senate or congressional seat. You know i'm really sick and tired of the republicans and those blue dog democrats.

The tea baggers think and accuse Obama of being a socialist. I'm begging to wish he was one! We need to switch to a socialized democracy. But oh well that will never happen b/c we live in such a backwoods, redneck country.

Dire news.

(I'm behind you on all your outrage, except I do hope you can tone it down on the rights of illegals and prisoners.  Prisoners are US citizens mostly and have rights, despite their crimes.  And illegals often pay taxes and certainly dont have an easy life.)

I particularly agree with your last two paragraphs!

funding is based on last year's numbers because they have no way to accurately predict how many new cases will show up during the current year along with how many of those cases will need ADAP funding. Plus there is only a limited amount of money set aside for ADAP so if your state's ADAP rolls would jump by say 2000 people this year, there still might not be enough Federal funds for your state.

Then you'll find that most of the ADAP crisises happening (11 states now) are because the states also contribute to the ADAP fund. Many states are strapped in their budgets and ADAP is way down on the list of things to pay for. Recently SC contemplated paying NOTHING to the ADAP program or to any HIV prevention programs. Sorry but illegals are here illegaly. They are committing a crime and should be rewarded for it. One of the main reasons illegals come here is b/c they know they will get free health care (along with companies luring them here with jobs). Very unfair to those of us who play the game and abide the laws. Whether or not they pay taxes is a mute point. I'm not saying they should be pushed out of ADAP altogether but they should go to the back of the line in terms of getting the services. They should be the ones on the waiting lists. Those of us who are US citizens and pay taxes should be receiving these services first.

2nd as for prisoners so we should be keeping a murderer alive while law abiding citizens are being put on wait lists. I mean we are talking cutting costs here. If it's drastic measures we need to insure those of us playing the game fairly get these services then we are going to have to make tuff choices.

I was with you until you brought illegals and prisoners into it.  I just feel it was unnecessary and it won't change the problem.  Most illegals actually pay something like 80% of the taxes that we pay.  They even pay into social security and medicare, but can't get it.  I would have to find the study, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct.  If you excluded these people, tax payers would end up paying for the care they would need when they ended up in the hospital from AIDS.  That would be much more expensive.

Instead of turning this into a thread about illegals and prisioners, how bout why the gov't can't fund this but we just topped $1 Trillion in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We have the money.  We just need to pressure Congress.
