While I was at abcnews.com for something else, I came across this story.  While it doesn't directly talk about HIV, I thought some may want to participate.  I know many here have talked about being on several different meds and it would be good to have an HIVer's point of view.

Not sure if how many pills an HIV person takes is "too much information" or "too complex information" or just bad publicity.  I'm sure it would be negative generally if the HIV+ person giving the testimonial is taking handfuls a day, and probably negative too if just one - Atripla.  Either way, in a brief report in crappy news journalism, sound bite size, it wouldn't do much to educate the population about the diverse reality of living with HIV.

Ted, they're looking for people who feel their doctor is over-medicating them. Just because many people with hiv take a lot of meds doesn't mean they're being over-medicated.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

I think that the link is more about many elderly patients, the type that have so many specialist prescribing what not but then there's no grand overview by one GP type doctor of all of this, and often the patient is picking up the prescriptions at more than one pharmacy so even the pharmacists' computers can't fully access their complete record and receive notification of any medicinal conflicts, etc.

As far as the HIV patient goes, and of course this only applies to those of us with multiple issues, this is what makes it important that the patient be pro-active if, for example, you're seeing a shrink or any other patient, that you fully report what you're taking to your primary care doctor/HIV specialist.  As well, I would always recommend obtaining your scripts from the same pharmacy so there's one complete electronic record.  But also, this is why it's important that the US undertakes an upgrade in electronic medical records for the patient, and one that is accessible on one federal level and not just state by state.

I take around 25 pills daily, and that's probably the lowest amount I've had to endure since going on treatment.  I'm used to the routine and have always done what I describe above.  The bottom line is that the patient has a responsibility as much as the doctor.

I recently saw an elderly woman in the E.R. who presented with altered mental status. Her family brings in a grocery bag of 28 different medications by several different doctors and no one knows what she actually takes, they just collected all the bottles on her nightstand. The family wonders why grandma is acting strange! I wish I could say this is a rare circumstance but it is not.

This is a good example not to post when it is late and you're tired.  When I read it, I had it in my head they were looking for people who have illnesses and have to take so many meds and what all that entails.  I completely missed/ignored the part about over-medicating.  To be honest, I think reading the headline and skimming the details.  You're right, I highly doubt any HIVer is taking too many meds when they don't need them.  They would be on them, because they need all of them.

I think it's always important to be wary of the media.
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.
