Seattle's Best Coffee Stirs Up Heated Opinions
« on: May 19, 2010, 09:10:16 PM »
http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/109607/seattles-best-coffee-stirs-up-heated-opinions

Seattle's Best Coffee revealed a redesigned logo this week. Unfortunately, it's ambiguous look brings to mind a lot more than just a cup of joe.

The simplified design seems rather generic, say some of the kinder observers. Other pundits are calling it a bowl of cereal filled with tears. But the harshest critics say the new look seems more appropriate for a blood donation center.

"Seattle's Best Blood Bank," wrote one snarky blog commentator. "High school art students could do a better job at designing a logo," proclaimed another. Ouch.

People are too critical, it's a logo.  Although why did they change it at all?

Both are kinda blah.  The new one might be better in brown. I like the clean font but it also makes me think of an oil company.

Reminds me of an oil company, too.  See below:

so long as you steer clear of the Caramel Macchiato Frappajoe, Mark. I hope that sort of "coffee" never takes off here.

As an aside, I never took to these expensive coffee shops.  Am I the only one?

The NYC coffee cart price point seems to have set in permanently for me.  In the starbucks in Switzerland you'd think they were selling Rolexes, given the prices.

To this day, the best joe is buck a cup American coffee, or cheap coffee bars in Italy.  75 cent coffee is even better! Bottomless cups of diner coffee warm my soul.

Coffee is the nectar of the Gods, and as such should not be skimped on. I always have a bag of Starbucks in my house, currently working on "Daily Horizons Blend". But at the same time I always keep a can of Folgers instant *GASP* in case of emergencies.

When Im out and about Mc Donalds is the choice for me, they've always had the best fast food coffee, and I just had one of their Iced Lattes the other day and was quite impressed.

But back to the topic at hand...The new Logo looks like crap, i loved the old one. and just thing they probably paid someone $200,000 to come up with that monstrosity, something a kindergartener could have done for a lollipop.

I'm a modest pot a day coffee drinker . When I lived in Chicago I was a starbucks addict and sometimes spent up to $20 something on coffee alone . By the time I had lunch at work and bought coffee it cost me over 30 bucks a day just to leave the house .

My goal today is to go buy a quality bag of beans to grind and leave the unnamed swill I have been drinking lately alone .

My coffee beans come primarily from Old City Coffee, Reading Terminal Market.  I don't generally ever buy a blend, preferring single origin which I grind at home in a Baratza conical burr grinder -- conical burr is important!  Lately I've been quite liking a Uganda Bugisu bean that has a rather syrupy body with a subtle cherry note.

http://www.oldcitycoffee.com/shop/coffee.html

I only go to Starbucks to spend the $50 in gift certificates that a relative gave me for Christmas, and I'm sure that will take a year to use because I still kind of avoid it.  As far as they're whole beans go they're over-roasted.  You really need to find a local roaster.

You're right, but for me only at home, where I have great coffee and milk, both organic and equitably produced yada yada ya.
McDonalds basic coffee is good I agree but dont care for the fancy new stuff.

Coffee beans are the seeds of a certain type of Cherry tree, right?  I remember seeing that (I think) a few years ago.  I never knew that.  And the Arabican blend is better, right?

Coffee is made from the seeds of a coffee plant (originally native to the Ethiopian highlands), which are then roasted by various methods.  Arabica is just one species of the plant, though it's the preferred one for higher end coffee.  I think cheap, commercial grade  coffee is made from robusta species.

Italians and French mix some Robusta in the Arabica.  Robusta has that "smelly sock" smell/taste but not unpleasant for fans of things acrid.  Its quite macho (and high in caffeine) and goes well with the manly latin perfumes of the 70's and 80's and unfiltered cigarettes.

If it's not an expresso sipped from one of those small plastic shot cups at a Cuban diner's take out window, then it's Master Blend made by Maxwell House for me.  My wife likes her coffee a little strong for my taste, I'm a smooth and mellow type fellow.  She loves Starbucks, which I find rancid and bitter. It's that bitter taste that makes me shy away from a lot of the expensive primo roast/blends, etc..

lattes and cappuccino's aren't "new stuff" -- if you mean more of the nasty Starbucks choices with caramel and raspberry mixed in then I'd agree.  Is that what you were referring to?

Wow! Coffee from Civet Droppings....I wonder who was the first person to gather up Civet crap and brew a cup of coffee?

Nonetheless, I'd like to try a cup.

Apparently it's swanky stuff. The President of Indonesia brought some to Australia as a gift for the Prime Minister after which it earned the name "crappachino".

I'm not a huge fan of coffee. Certainly not the instant or filtered varities. I can handle the occasional flat white.

I think it's worth noting that coffee can be improved when it's first eaten and then shat out by a jungle cat.
