The Levy Lab: UCSF Study Needs Study Volunteers, Please!
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:11:59 PM »
To the AM Forum Members residing in the San Francisco Bay Area:

Dr. Jay Levy, Professor of Medicine from the University of California, San Francisco, has requested my assistance to circulate an appeal for HIV-positive persons in the Bay Area (only) to participate in his clinical research study. Dr. Levy is a wonderful person, and a true icon in the history of HIV/AIDS research. Please help if you can!

Thank you.
Zephyr

Introductory paragraph from Dr. Levy’s website - (http://labs.medicine.ucsf.edu/levylab): Welcome to the Levy Laboratory. Our focus is on HIV pathogenesis. We are particularly interested in innate immune responses in controlling HIV infection and preventing virus transmission. Included in our studies is the identification of the CD8+ cell antiviral factor (CAF) which blocks HIV replication. Moreover, in our studies of innate immunity, we focus on plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) which are the major producers of IFN- a. This cytokine blocks virus replication and can have a variety of effects influencing HIV pathogenesis. Finally, our laboratory is working on developing an effective HIV vaccine using an approach that involves induction of innate immunity which can enhance adaptive immune responses.

It's too bad they can't take volunteers from other states and have the blood shipped.  I would love to participate.
