Atripla Joint Pain?
« on: April 15, 2010, 10:52:23 AM »
I've been having increased joint pain for the last year or so.  I'm sure some of it is age and perhaps occasional overuse.  My hands are almost always sore and stiff.  I also feel like I have tendinitis in my left elbow despite no unusual activity.  My legs get stiff and sore if I don't move around (walk, shift if I'm standing, etc).  Ibuprofen seems to help, but I don't like taking it regularly.

I know joint pain is listed as a side effect of Atripla, but I'm not sure what sort of pain it causes.  I'm having a hard time determining which of the three components in it cause this side effect; surely it's not all three!  I seem to be having success with it in terms of HIV suppression, and I enjoy taking one pill once a day.  The single co-pay is also nice.  However, if this pain continues to increase, I'll certainly think about changing meds.  Are others also having joint pain from Atripla?  How does one determine if it's the cause of the pain?  Does the pain cease after switching meds?  Does anybody have any hints or suggestions for pain relief besides pain relievers?  I have noticed that I feel much better after a vigorous workout at the gym; the nature of the workout has a lot of stretching, so perhaps that's part of the solution.

Hey David -- Are you taking any meds for high cholesterol?  Many of them can and do cause serious joint problems and tightness (can even lead to ruptured tendons and the like).  I have a good friend who was on Crestor and experienced symptoms like yours, and he had to drop the Crestor because of the joint issues...

Hi Nash,

Nope, no cholesterol meds here!  I do take Lisinopril for hypertension.  Oddly enough, joint pain is listed as one of its side effects.  I've been taking it for a couple of years now and have only noticed a stuffy nose as a side effect, but I suppose they can appear at any time.  Thanks for giving me the idea of looking at other causes (besides getting older!)

I've been having stiffness in my neck, but no actual pain in my joints.  Actually my hip socket used to hurt at night and keep me up, but it stopped after I got on Atripla (I'm sure this is pure coincidence)

Hi Hellraiser,

I also have been having a problem with my right hip (Sound like old ladys here) and I thought it was from not exercising but even when I went back and started doing a lot of cardio again, it continued.
I googled "hip pain and HIV" and go figure 1000 things came up regarding HIV and Avascular Necrosis.
Now I have been worrying about that lol. I have to get it checked but it has not gotten terribly worse. Just stayed the same.... Can you imagine needing at hip replacement at 38? Jeezzzz

Hello David,

I am sorry to hear about your joint pains.  I experienced a similar pain in my joints and it usually happened while I was sleeping.  My joints would hurt so badly that I would feel like crying; however, since I have been taking Atripla--I haven't had anymore problems.  I am not sure if joint pains are a result of the virus or what, but you may want to discuss your symptoms with your doctor.  I hope you get better and let us know what you find out.

I personally haven't had joint pains since I started Atripla.  Last time I had knee pain (pre-Atripla days), I took Glucosamine and Chondroitin, which are joint supplements used in the treatment of arthritis.  I know a few people that take this for joint pain and they swear by it.
Feel better!

David,

I am not on Atripla, so I can't answer about that.  But, minor joint pain and especially hip pain, is something that has increased since staring on meds. I haven't started hypertension medication yet( probably this week)  But I am also on Simvastatin.

The hip pain is the most noticible to me. If I have to get on the floor for any reason, trying to get up, can get to be a little painful at times.

Current Meds ; Viramune, Epzicom, 40mg of simvastatin, 25 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide.

Thanks for the replies.  Perhaps it's some combination of getting older, Atripla, Lisinopril, and genetics.  It seems that hip pain runs in my family... at least in the women (no comments needed!)  Exercise with lots of motion - workout at the gym, stretching, walking, etc - all seem to help.  I sometimes have pain from what I think is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  I've been doing some stretching exercises that are supposed to minimize it, and they seem to help with the pain in my arms, wrists, shoulders, and hands.
