How Long For HAART Medicine Side-Effects To Kick In?
« on: March 31, 2010, 09:36:00 PM »
Hi. Am new here. Just started on Truvada + Viramune combo 3 days ago. Was extremely nervous and anxious about the long, long list of possible side-effects on the info sheets (though also conscious of being fooled by the so-called Nocebo effect).

Thankfully, after 3 days the only side-effects I've noticed are slight bloating and tiredness. I know I need to still watch out for rashes, but apart from that (referring to things like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches etc.) if I haven't got other side FX yet, am I out of the woods for now? Or does it take longer for the drugs to actually affect your body and these kinds of side effects to kick in?

Thanks.

Welcome Zie,

I'm not on your regimine, but my non-doctorate opinion is that you would have seen something by now, or in the next day or two. I've only been on 2 different regimines and with my first one (atripla) the dizziness showed up immediately with the first dose. The diarreha and soft stools may show up, but I think you would have seen the biggies (vomitting, etc...) by now. I think you will be fine.

Others will be along shortly who may ahve experience with your regimine.

Having been on twenty different HIV meds at one time or the other, I'd have to disagree with the Wumpster.  While he's (generally) correct if it's a hardcore allergic reaction, just getting run of the mill side effects like diarrhea, nausea, etc. can spring up a bit further down the road.  In fact, even when I had my allergic reaction to Ziagen I don't think it appeared until day 4 or 5.  I had other side effects happen in week 2 or 3, etc.  And while not an HIV med itself, I've had reactions from other medications not appear for a year (with Bactrim).

Of course, the longer you do with this the less likely something is to happen.  I'd advise you not sit there worrying for the other shoe to drop until and if it actually drops.  It's not really going to get you anywhere.  I'm afraid that there aren't any hard and fast rules with this stuff so no sense trying to pretend that there are.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a newbie at this drug adherence thing (the world has always told me "SAY NO TO DRUGS" not "TAKE THEM NO MATTER WHAT" haha), and it's kinda freaky to read the word "DEATH" as in "Rashes and skin reactions may be severe, life-threatening, and in some people, may lead to death" in the patient information pamphlet.

So just wondering what other people's thoughts are on the issue  ;D

[PS Actually one kinda weird side-effect I'm noticing that I haven't heard mentioned, is that about an hour after I take my dose I feel woozy and horny. And after about 6 hours I get really hungry. No kidding.]

there are lots of medications that have those same types of statements in the patient information sheets ----  even the television ads for various meds always say tell your doctor if your experience this, or have this as this may be a sign of this and severe that may occur and this may occur, etc, etc, etc, etc, and so on and so on.... the drug companies have to be able to show diligence in covering most any effect that may happen, even though some are very rare occurrences.

hi,

Hope things go well for you.  I was started on Viramune back in 2003, and had no problems with it and am still on it. Are you only taking one Viramune a day for the first two weeks ? Taking Viramue is a two step process. after the second week you will then take two viramunes a day. 12 hours apart.  Thats' how i take mine. one Viramune every 12 hours .

Good luck---Ray
Current Meds ; Viramune, Epzicom, 40mg of simvastatin, 12.5mg of Hydrochlorothiazide.

Howdy Zie-

I'm taking Truvada and Viramune as well, and have experienced absolutely no adverse side-effects.  But I'd agree with others that you're probably not out of the woods yet.  The reason the Viramune dosing is staged -- one pill a day for the first two weeks, and then two pills (12 hours apart) thereafter -- is to lessen the likelihood of the Viramune rash that can pop up.  I noticed no difference when I went to two pills a day (and most people don't), but you'll probably need to get through the first three or four weeks before knowing whether you'll escape the rash as well.  But I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.  You've got a good running start, and chances are you'll do just fine.  From my perspective, this is a great combo, and I hope you'll like it as much as I have.

Ah, my dearest one, and with that we find your folly.  I never read those silly patient insert pamphlet thingies.  You know how drug companies like to cover their asses so they just throw everything including the kitchen sink into those insert warnings.

The bottom line is that millions of people pop these pills everyday and go about their lives.  Relax and stop worrying until and if something happens with yourself.

Thanks everyone for your replies, makes feel a lot better honestly  :D

@ WillyWump - Thx, I took my 3rd dose and didn't even get the bloating/tiredness, so sounds like you thought correctly  :)

@ JRE - Yea I am taking one Viramune a day with the one Truvada for the first fortnight, then will be taking one in the morning + one in the evening for the second fortnight, then after 4 weeks I will be taking everything at once (2 Viramune + 1 Truvada) once a day thereafter, assuming no complications.

@ Nashvegas - That's good to hear you noticed no difference when you increased the Viramune dose. It's something I was kinda worried about also, ie, is it gonna freak my liver out all over again hehe.

@ phildinftlaudy - It would be really nice if the companies in their info leaflets would say something like, "on average x% of people" get this or that, instead of the vague adjective "some", which in my over-active imagination can mean anything from 1 to 49 percent  ::)

@ Miss Philicia - The truth is I just want to make sure I'm not going to drop dead in the middle of the dance floor this Easter weekend. It's so not a good look ;)

Cheers everyone. Happy Easter.

Hi Zielwolf:

In regards to:
@ phildinftlaudy - It would be really nice if the companies in their info leaflets would say something like, "on average x% of people" get this or that, instead of the vague adjective "some", which in my over-active imagination can mean anything from 1 to 49 percent

If you go to the drug's website or do a search on the web you can get the full drug information packet which includes the info you are talking about.  It will actually show how many people the drug was clinically tested on and breakdown by number and % the various adverse effects associated with the drug.  This is what I have done with different drugs in the past to get a better idea of just how pronounced or non-pronounced some effects may be.

Best to you also,
