Good news, of course. But it's still just Phase I. A long way to go still; I'm curbing my enthusiasm for the time being. Jay
Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

I will only believe it when I can buy it. The article talks about the great progress China has made in aids medicine. Hmmm.  If they have anything, they probably have stolen it from US or Euros.

Well, if the Chinese did steal ideas from the US and Europe....and are able to utilize the resources and come up with a vaccine that could work one day....then so be it if it could save millions of lives.

But I admit it is only phase 1, but it seems promising to me.  Some good news is better than no news at all.

i would love to see a trial in china.  Notice the Pr is from the Chinese government.  I apologize for being cynical but I have seen many of these kind of claims over the years and I am still eating PIs and other poisons.

Hello Justin,

This is good news that the researchers are involved in their work. The first phase looks good. Can you say breakthrough?

Thanks for the article, it was very interesting to read and hear.

I hate to be cynical and selfish, but this sounds like a preventive vaccine, so If a successful preventive vaccine is developed what does that do for those of us already infected ? Will research on betterni therapies/possible cures drop off significantly ?
I do not wish this on anyone and a preventive vaccine would be fantastic especially in those areas of the world without ready access to HAART or the medical infrastructure for the care and monitoring of HIV positive people on HAART. But what will a preventive vaccine mean for the tens of millions of people already infected ?

For me it means a lot.... If we at least make part of the numbers motivating those researchers, then we, indirectly, helped save lifes. I do not wish this to anyone.... And if people can avoid it, great. I do not care who does it. A life saved by US, is as worthy as one saved by China, or europe, or Jupiter fot that matter.

Hello Manhattanman, it is Eldon. When you have a chance, you can view this website at your leisure: http://www.iavi.org/.

The XVI International AIDS Conference was a huge success, with an estimated 24,000 participants from more than 170 countries in attendance.

There are researchers working on a vaccine, it is an International effort.

I remember the Chinese having a vaccine for AIDS some years back. Came to fuck all as I recall. We shouldn't forget that China grossly underestimates the number of HIV positive people in it's community. Also many Chinese think tiger penis soup promotes male virility.

Stinks of bullshit to me.

Yup. China has no HIV problem yet they churn out vaccines like a Southern Baptist churns out bitchy judgement. As for bird flu, I guess it killed the birds. Who would of thunk it? ;)

Tiger penis (indeed the male member of many rare species) has a HUGE following in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). You make a soup from the wretched organ. Rhino horn is also recommended for impotence, given that it looks like a penis.

Going off Topic. I was at a baptist funeral thingy(i got this word from Ann)a couple of weeks ago. At about the half way mark, the dude started looking for converts. I thought we were gonna have a baptism in the middle of a funeral. It was pretty disgusting. Why do all these guys dressed like they just walked off a "miami vice" set? Why are they all so sleazy? Gives me the creeps. No possessed souls jumping up screaming "praise the lord" like at the last thing I attended.
Have you ever noticed that all these Baptist Churches are just really family businesses? They have the kids playing piano and collecting loot and the wife belting out tunes?

Well not really Jakey. I'm an Australian Socialist HomosexualTM. I don't see the inside of too many Baptist Churches. Except when I fire-bomb them.

I'd go down a treat in Alabama. ;)

I personally wouldn't be surprised that China comes up with a vaccine before any other country simply because the Chinese seems to have something to prove.....Afterall, many are convinced that they are the next super power.

A country that grossly underestimates the number of HIV people in it's community does not mean they are not capable of developing a vaccine....there are no correlations between the two.  Besides, is China really underestimating the number of HIV people in its community?  Could it be because China wants to develop a vaccine before the number of infection rises in its community?  hence a preventive vaccine effort.  I rather see many vaccines churning up that could potentially be effective than no vaccines at all.  That is the beauty of having to battle through less bureaucracies.  If one vaccine doesn't work, move on....rather having to wait years and years for this and that to be approved.  It takes more than one try in order to find an effective vaccine.  Failure in the pass could lead to successful developments later on. Whether this vaccine proves to be effective or not, news of this sort provides hope for me and reminds me to stay strong so that hopefully I will live long enough to see a cure for this horrendous disease.

Tiger penis ey MTD? I have never heard of tiger penis soup promoting virility....enlighten me since you seem to know more about it then I do.

Yup and many are convinced that I am the Anti-Christ. I'm not, I just play cards with him on a Monday night. I'll be sure to mention you to him. He sends his regards, by the way.

Honey, whilst it's nice that one idea flows unto the next they should have something in common. Non-sequiturs to one side, the Chinese (bless 'em) may find a lot of things but it's not gonna be the answer to AIDS. AIDS doesn't happen in China. Well it does to sluts and homos but not to normal people. Well ok to normal poor people who expect a blood tranfusion or a transplant, but no-one else.

Tiger penis ey MTD? I have never heard of tiger penis soup promoting virility....enlighten me since you seem to know more about it then I do.

i just read this and this is great news everyone. finally we could see the light at the end of the tunnel. we need to start pushing this news about this news report and somehow get these trials of this class closer to us the Chinese are always one step ahead of us but thats what makes them so unique. lets pass this news around and follow it close so we can keep a thread on this new possible cure. finally were getten somewhere with some great research. if any one needs a ticket to china for us to go and enter into a trial run then let us know and we will all go together. grab your bags and roll.

Matty: How do you know this? Can you see the future?  ??? Please share that lovely ability of yours! Heaven knows, planet Earth needs your help, especially with the Israel and Jon Benet Ramsey situations   :D  :D  8)  :-*

Joe: Choose your words carefully. "Racist" is likely an overstatement when it comes to Matty's comments, but he has expressed disdain for China in this and other threads, however that's his freedom of speech. As everyone knows, many atrocities go on in China so I can partially relate to Matty's sentiments. He wouldn't be our beloved Matty if he did not occasionally step over the boundaries of taste (e.g., rice queen pudding)  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Perhaps I'm just stupid, but after 25 years why are people only searching for a vaccine to prevent the healthy from getting it, rather than searching for a cure for those who already have it.  If one can find a way to stop the disease, then a vaccine wouldn't really be all that necessary would it?

That has to be a translation problem. I seriously doubt they would know if people were immune to HIV 15 days after injection. I think they mean that they were able to detect the predicted immune response in patients within 15 days. That means that the vaccine is doing what it should - stimulating the immune system against whatever they added - but whether that acts to prevent HIV infection is another thing completely. How would they know? Did they infect the patients with HIV? That's the only way you would know if they were immune. That's highly unethical if they did....

Although I agree that we should all be happy with any progress that is made in this field, please recall that this story appeared in People's Daily, which is the Chinese government's official newspaper.  Back during the Cold War, we knew enough to be suspicious of things we read in Pravda, and I think this is no different.

This doesn't mean that the story is necessarily false.  It may well be true for all I know.  But the point is that one should approach anything one finds in such a source with a healthy dose of skepticism.

No matter if the source of the story omcomes from a Communist paper or what.  If some imbecile has figued out a way for me to download porn to my cell phone, then they need to get off their asses and do something for real for once in their miserable lives.  There's been 25 years to fuck around and let people die because only fags and junkies get AIDS, and they'll burn in hell anyways - it's time to stop looking for vaccines and find a cure!

ray, I don't see our government beating aids victims? The same Chinese government who is searching for this vaccine is beating HIV victims. I thought it very ironic. Compassionate Communists?
Can any one think of any recent medical discoveries or breakthroughs by China?

Oh Jack !,

Our government wouldn't do that. We just put people needing medications on "waiting lists"  I am not sure what the current number is waiting on meds. We just give them as slow torture.

Now thats "compassionate Conservatism." And I am out of this conversation !!

Shit! I'd forgotten about this thread! Must be the AIDS dementia . . . .

I think I understand what got Joe and Justin's panties in a bunch. It was my use of the term "rice queen". Here in Australia "rice queen" refers to a white man who fancies asian men. Interestingly, an asian man who fancies white men is called a "potato queen".

Such a rich tapestry of cultural terminology!

Anyway if anyone was offended by my salty remarks I'd just like to say:

TOUGH TITTIES!

Sweetheart, what you haven't heard of would fill the Grand Canyon.

No really? are you serious? I thought my question was about Tiger Penis soup and not about what I did not know since you have mentioned "many" Chinese think tiger penis promotes male virility...

Hugs,

Justin

Justin, He is serious. Check out this link when you get the chance to: http://www.earthtrust.org/tiger.html

The tiger penis: aphrodisiac and exotic fare

The tiger is revered for its strength and sexual prowess. Chinese legend has it that consuming parts of the tiger enables the user to briefly harness the animal's power. Tie that belief in with the Taiwanese obsession with sexual performance: newspapers advertise various potions guaranteed to enhance a male's sexual ability and allow him to better pleasure his partner. Promotions of sexual aids have even found their way onto network television.

A traditional method of using tiger penises is to soak the penis in a tonic or expensive brandy for extended periods at least six months according to one source. Just prior to sex, the consumer takes a "slug."

The author visited, in October 1992, a Snake Alley establishment specializing in "mountain products" (the name implies, among other things, exotic wildlife) and was allowed to view the sales pitch for a tonic said to contain seal and tiger penises. The tonic costs US$8 a shot and $US40 per bottle. Midway thought the pitch, as a group of at least 30 men looked on, a hawker brought a scantily clad woman out of a back room and stood her in front of his captive audience. Upon noticing a foreign face in the crowd, the hawker ordered the other patrons to crowd in front of the "outsider" as foreigners do not understand Chinese ways. When none of the men complied, the hawker's tone grew exceedingly violent and he began yelling directly at the author and one other Westerner, at which point we departed.

In December 1992, a Taiwanese Earthtrust investigator visited the same shop and recorded the entire event. The tonic in question, according to the hawker, was guaranteed to vastly improve a man's sexual staying power. "If you drink this," he joked, "tonight you won't be able to get that zipper up!" At one point a prostitute was again brought out for all to see. To prove the efficacy of the potion, the prostitute was placed behind a thin, gauze-like screen some ten feet from her audience. At the hawker's command and as the audience looked on, one of his colleagues mounted the woman....

Exotic, unusual foods are also popular on Taiwan. One Taizhong based restaurant, Pu Chung Pao, caters to the islands wealthy; in December 1992 the establishment prepared an NT500,000 or US$20,000 meal in the recipe of the imperial court of the Ching Dynasty for a party of fifteen (Anon. 1993b). The restaurant also serves tiger penis soup at NT8,000 or US$320 per serving (Anon. 1991). In December 1992 a foreign television station visited Pu Chung Pao and taped an interview with the restaurant's head waitress, Miss "Casey." The full text of the interview follows: (click link for interview)

"Rice Queen" is used in the US too.  Or at least on the east coast it is.  There are also Bean Queens.

I did a presentation at the Ryan White National Youth Conference earlier this year in Philly on the impact of HIV/AIDS in the Asian community and several bothering info to pass regarding China is that 1) The Chinese government infected hundreds of rural Chinese citizens by "harvesting" their blood...while using the same needles from one citizen to another! 2) The government came up with its "own" numbers of people infected with HIV which was significantly lower by that stipulated by UNAIDS...umm, conspiracy? Either way, I am disgusted at how China underestimates the HIV pandemic in its own country. How a country has issues of denial about the impact of HIV on its country, yet still come up with such progress, funding and research for HIV is ironic and beyond me. But I'm not devaluing the efforts of the Chinese...we need all the help we can get. And cph, in terms of time, funding, and techniques, it's easier to produce a vaccine than a genetically based cure for HIV/AIDS. But either way, I will always have confidence that a cure will come one day.

I apologize for my first post being a bit negative in response to the article but the first thing I read was the source "Chinese Daily."  I consider myself a long-term survivor of HIV disease (24 years now) and continue to "gobble up" articles that promise new breakthroughs.  Anyway, what I recall most vividly of my visit to China in the mid 80's was a display of aborted fetuses at all of the nine month stages of growth during pregnancy.  These were proudly displayed like pickled eggs in formaldehyde-filled jars at an open fair in a Beijing park.  Party Members in nurses uniforms were on hand to reiterate the Peoples Party mantra of "one baby per one couple.  Therefore, I'm a bit skeptical that the Chinese, who strictly promote population control, would seriously be at the forefront researching for a cure.  Especially in light of the fact that the government flatly denied the existence of HIV in their country for years.  I am confident, however, that when a vaccine becomes available, they will be the first to pirate it!  Like the others, I'll believe it when I see it.  Meanwhile, I will continue taking my medications in hopes of a brighter tommorrow!
Due to current economic conditions, the light at the end of the tunnel has been temporarily turned off!
