Some answers
« on: January 07, 2010, 06:33:32 PM »
Hello. About 4 months ago I had vaginal sex with a woman of unknown status. Unfortunately, the condom broke. I suppose I was inside her 1 to 2 minutes tops. Went to the health department about 12 hours later to request PEP but was refused. The doctor stated the risk was not high enough, but I could test at the appropriate time.I am currently awaiting my results from home access but was curious about something. Should I have been more insistent on receiving the medications or perhaps attempted to go elsewhere? I accepted his advice but now i suppose with the test pending am having second thoughts. Any advice would be warmly appreciated.

Your doctor made the right call. You had a single and briefly unprotected incident. The condom protected you until it broke. The likelihood of infection during that incident was very, very low.

I expect your test result to be negative.

Cheers.

You are probably correct, as I have been browsing the forums for some time and you and Ms. Smith seem to really know what you are talking about. Bad luck i guess, I don't think I had ever had a condom fail until this incident.

You're lucky it hasn't happened until now. I can also tell you that I don't know of any cases where transmission has actually occured when a condom failed. So odds are you are going to test negative. As far as I am concerned getting tested is just doing the cautious thing.

Cheers.

Yes, the doctor pretty much said the same thing in reference to not seeing a positive result from condom failure. He also mentioned the fact that I am circumcised would help, not sure how, but I'll take all the help i can get. Thanks again for the advice Mr. Velez.

The reason the risk is lower for a man who is circumcised is because the skin of  theinside of the uncut foreskin has the kinds of cells which are receptive to transmission. Being circumcised removes that risk.

Interesting. Really glad this site exists. Anyway, I should have my home access results by monday. I spoke to a counselor and was informed their tests are just as accurate as you will find in a doctors office, so I will know for sure soon. Really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions and help keep me level-headed and calm Mr. Velez.

Good news, Bain! No surprise here but I do appreciate the relief it gives you. Glad you found our exchanges to be helpful during a stressful time.

Best of luck now and make sure to keep handy and continue to use condoms everytime for intercourse.

Cheers.
