102.5
« on: October 28, 2009, 10:11:49 am »
I've been sick now for over 36 hours, and my fever is going up, not down.  I called my doctor for a walk in appointment but the f*ckers couldn't see me until 9 AM tomorrow.  It's not seasonal flu as I got my shot about 10 days ago.  I thought it might be bronchitis, and it still kind feels like it, and this is something I've gotten (or any upper respiratory infection) yearly since I was a child.  But when I get bronchitis I don't ever get a fever temperature that high.  Plus I have headaches, no appetite and periods of dizziness.

Anyway, if it turns out to be Swine Flu I will demand four gold stars.

Do you think it might be a sinus infection? I had a bad one and had to get antibiotics Monday. Your symptoms sound familiar.

I have had sinus issues a decade ago, and at least for me it was easy to tell what was going on.  All I had to do is bend my head down and it felt like giant marbles were rolling around my cranium.  That's not happening right now.

In fact, my throat is not particularly sore, but it's quite rare for me to get a sore throat.

I'm taking Mucinex-D (wonder drug!), maximum strength Tussin cough syrup, and alternating doses of aspirin and generic Aleve.  I still can't get the temperature down even with all of that.  Sorry to be a whiner, not generally my style -- but I don't recall being this sick for a good 10 years.

Sorry to hear you're sick. If you need something give me a call.
If its any consolation,  I am sick too.  There is definately something "upper respiratory" going around. And another 17 year old dies of H1N1 in NJ this week.
I dont think us old survivors are that susceptable to H1N1..but what do I know.

Miss P,

Hope you fell better soon.

I know you have more experience in this than I do, but I had a "mystery fever" a few months ago that spiked up to 102 then quickly went down to normal within 24 hours. Doctors had no clue. I hope yours goes away quickly, fevers are a bitch and can be scary (at least for me).

Also, I'm having Sustiva-like dreams from the guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine in the Mucinex D.  I guess that's why they have to hide it behind the sales counter.  Teenagers do something with these pills and get high off it.

I've had a couple sex dreams, but most of them are things like that my small apartment is suddenly full of large metal sewer pipes, etc.  Plus I'm not getting very good sleep because of this -- I wake up with every odd dream.

OK, David, Mum's here.  First, like Joel said, drink, drink, drink.  Since you're getting dizzy, try drinking liquids that are room temp or a wee bit cooler.  When cold hits your sinus cavity or makes your eustatia tubes cold going down, it can cause nistagmus (not sure how to spell it, but it means "dizzy").  Since you're already feeling dizzy, this could make it worse.  You could also try drinking chicken broth.  If you have bouillion cubes, stick one in 1 cup of hot water and stir.  Oh, be careful drinking things too hot, it can cause nistagmus, too.

I hope you feel better soon, hun!  Not real happy that the doc won't fit you in. >:(

I guess that's why they have to hide it behind the sales counter.  Teenagers do something with these pills and get high off it.

Anything with pseudoephedrine sold without a Rx is what those who run meth labs try to buy in bulk, it's the one ingredient they can't do without.

I guess all those many Tcells of yours were bored and needed something to do, this should keep them entertained for a day or so.

Feel better and keep us posted.

When I'm sick with fever I get those too... weird dreams that just screw with your sleep.  Have you been able to break the fever at all?   I know you probably are not able to eat a lick, but try and at least keep a little something on your stomach...

I hope you feel better soon David.

Have you been able to break the fever at all?
this is why I always try to have my mystery fevers in the winter. ;D When I was in OH all I had to do was stand outside for about 5 minutes in the -5 to 15 degree weather. No fever can stand up to that kind of chill down.  :D I don't know what I'll do the next time I get a fever since I'm down here in SC where it snows so little that they freak at the snowflakes and instead of driving put the cars in the ditch  ::)

Have you tried holding the ice cream carton against your head?
you'll have to wait till you feel better before you smear the ice cream on yourself. ROFL

Well, I dont know about the brownies and ice cream. Ice cream (milk ) doesnt help loosen phlem, so your conjestion gets worse. Sugar aint good anyway.
How about a nice can of Campbells chicken soup?

My fever is still ~102.5 but at least I got a decent nap for a few hours.

The brownies were a treat.  I'm going to have a turkey sandwich now.

I've also hand washed three pairs of pants, and two cashmere sweaters.

My fever went down finally, but I just got back from the doctor's office and I do, indeed, have H1N1.

Another member on here also had H1N1, Carpediem98. I've heard it's not super serious, that even with HIV it hasn't hit people too severely.

I was wondering, how do they officially diagnose it?

Are you feeling better?

Glad to hear that your fever broke, and you have an official diagnosis.

Was the fever the only symptom bothering you?

They can do an official swab, but at this point they're basically not seeing any "regular" flu this early the season, so they diagnosing them as H1N1.  Plus I'd already gotten my shot for seasonal flu 2 weeks ago.

Otherwise I've just also had a really bad cough, and the high fever has made me periodically dizzy as well as blurred vision when reading.  No vomiting or diarrhea.

They saw no reason for Tamliflu since my fever has gone down.  I still feel like I have a fever, but I just took my temperature again and it was 98.3

Oh, and I just had such bad diarrhea that I had to wash the toilet and take a shower. :(

Glad to hear you are on the mend.  Please forgive me if I am talking out of turn here but just a word of caution about the asprin / Aleve cocktail.  The Aleve is really hard on your digestive system and the asprin thins your blood  so it is generally recommended that you take one or the other but not both, even in alternating doses.  I have seen a couple really bad GI bleeds from this combo so unless your doctor has instructed you to take this particular combo there are safer options available.  The same goes for Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc).  Anyway, just a thought.  Get well soon

I was much, much better as of yesterday.  I finally got out to the supermarket and actually had a huge strip steak for dinner, though I had to wrap up 1/4 of it and finish it later.  Still that was better eating that I'd had for five days or so.  I still have a periodic dry cough.  I appreciate the concern from my forum compatriots.

So I guess overall that was five days of sickness, which is probably as good as someone with no HIV infection.  We'll see how many t-cells evaporated into porcine dust when I have my blood work done in a few weeks.
