HIV infection from tattooing
« on: September 03, 2009, 02:42:01 PM »
is it possible? (This is in Canada where tattoo shops are not as closely regulated as it is in the States).
Got a tattoo about six months ago and have been afraid to get tested since. I finally got up the nerve to test yesterday and still waiting for the results. Over the last couple months I have been having a constant dry mouth, reoccuring skin infections and recently been diagnosed with strep throat). Could these all be related to HIV infection? Has anyone ever been infected via tattoo parlors?
Thanks

Nothing you are reporting symptomatically is in any way HIV specific or even suggestive of HIV infection.

As long as you went to a reputable tattoo shop I don't see any cause for concern. I've never known of transmission to occur in that manner when using a regular shop.

In any case your worrying will soon be answered because you'll have your test result. And I expect it to be negative. Good luck and keep us posted.

For future reference should you decide to get tattooed again, use a place you can go to with confidence and make sure the needles they are using for you are new and clean.

CDC knows of NO cases of HIV transmission from tattooing.

Thank you for the information Andy and Rod! And yes for the future I will definintley go to a place where the needles are for sure clean to avoid unnecessary anxiety.

A negative test result is always a happy thing even when it is expected.

Enjoy that result and just remember to protect yourself from the real risks for HIV transmission by always using condoms for vaginal and anal intercourse.

Cheers.

One final question:

As I had an untreated bout of strep throat while taking the test, would that in any way effect the result of the test?

Thanks.
