I think it's a great idea, arguing in real time is always better.

As far as I know, the SMF software does not have an IM option. I've never come across it in my travels through the admin bits of the software, anyway, and I've poked around in all of it.

You can always PM the people you'd like to talk to your usernames on any of the available, standared IM programs, such as MS, Yahoo, Skype, or AIM, to name a few. Some of them can even be put into your profile.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

This has come up here before.  If you really want to do what is proposed, then what Ann suggested is OK but not the ideal.  Other boards I participate on (non-HIV stuff) have set up permanent "channels" on IRC.  Now, IRC is very, very "old skool internet" so it's nothing fancy, but it will allow people to sign on all at once to a channel which is basically a chat room.

You can read about it here, though I have no idea how to set up a channel on it.  I can't imagine it's very difficult:

I was thinking like they have on facebook or myspace.  You can im with friends (if you want).

I know that this sight doesnt generate the revenue that they do, but just a thought.

PMing isnt the same especially for me because I never remember to look to see if I have any.

Yeah, but that's all just part of their software which I assume is proprietary.  Seriously, what I suggested isn't that hard.  I think Skype and, for example, AOL-IM have limitations on the number of individuals you can have in one chat room, don't they?  IRC channels do not, hence my suggestion.  Plus once set up the channel name is static, so when you sign into the theoretical AIDSmeds channel you'd immediately be on line with any other board member who was signed in.  Of course, this would mean you could only use it at home.

Seems to me that when I joined here in 2003, there was a chatroom, that was part of the forums then, where anyone could get in to, and live chat with other members.

However, I don't think it worked properly. And don't think it had a lot of participation.  Perhaps some of the other long term members can remember this.

Anyway... that was on the older forums long before Aidsmeds became part of POZ.

Another thing to consider is that there would be ZERO moderation in a chat room, so with AIDSmeds the size it is now I somehow doubt that they'd want anything to do with something unmoderated.  Too much exposure for them.

That's right, Ray, it was part of the FuseTalk software, and it was crap. It didn't work properly at all and that's why nobody used it.

Egads! No way would I want to sit around all day moderating a chat room.  :o

There is one "danger" in using an IM here.  It will limit greatly the folks that get to read topics being discussed and limits who will benefit from the chatting discussions.
Basically, let's say Phil and Skeebo are chatting about a topic that they would normally put up in the Forum, there will be no input from others and nobody else will benefit from their conclusions.
I know I for one would not be happy if I did not get Phil's input on things...lol.
