Tough Love vs. Spanking
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:37:33 PM »

Most people think it improper to spank children, so I have tried other methods to control my kids when they have one of 'those moments.'

One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk.

Some say it's the vibration from the car, others say it's the time away from any distractions such as TV, Video Games, Computer, IPod, etc.

Either way, kids usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our car ride together.  Eye to eye contact helps a lot too.

I've included a photo below of one of my sessions with my son, in case you would like to use the technique.

 Sincerely,
 Your Friend

This works with grandchildren,
 nieces, and nephews as well.

If the car ride doesn't work the first time try turning on the windshield wipers on the second run. That should teach the little bugger a lesson.
When my friends and family (I have 7 nieces and nephews) stared to have kids I used to wait until the first time they complained about the kid crying or not sleeping. I'd tell them to put an ounce of rum in with their formula and the kid will stop crying/go to sleep. I don't know if that worked but all I know is that Uncle Dale has NEVER EVER been asked to babysit.

This technique only works to about the 6 yr mark.  After that they are a bit heavy and end up going under the car.  That's when it could be considered by some to be cruel and unusual punishment.

I had a great response, but it kind of made me feel really bad when I re-read it.  My neon is not considered a SUV by the way. ;)

you'd likely be locked up for a long time for doing that here. Just recently a woman was accused and warned about assault with a weapon for spanking a child with a wooden spoon on the butt!!!

personally, i have no issue with a good spanking. If there are no consequences to your bad behaviour then you just keep repeating it. I got spanked numerous times as a child and I can not recall one that I did not deserve.

REALLY??  My mom had a wooden spoon in every room, purse and glove compartment in reach. If we tried to cover our asses with our hands she beat our hands.  I'm not saying we didn't deserve it, or that she was wrong, but I found it difficult to accept when she told me 10 years ago, "Well, I just don't believe in spanking anymore." Now that her grandchildren are living with her, I bet she wishes my sister had beaten her kids!

As far as drugging your kids, my sister and I were extremely happy babies and toddlers when my parents took us out in the evening for dinner with friends.  Mum's little secret? a thimbleful of liquid phenylbarbitol which you might remember as "Pa-Pa's medicine."

Too funny, Rondrond!

Last year , I would walk to school to get some excercise and a women actually drove by me with 2 girls hanging like that on her hood ,one week and another week ,off the trunk. I am assuming they were high school kids because it was before 3, but I still couldn't believe it.

All parents had to do was give me "the look" and I quit whatever I was doing.

I have another method of controlling children. ;)

Laudanum
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bottle of Laudanum/Opium Tincture. Note the bright red "POISON" warning box on the label given the potency of the drug and potential for overdose.
Laudanum (pronounced /ˈlɔːd(ə)nəm/) (laudanum liquidum simplex), also known as opium tincture or thebaic tincture is an alcoholic herbal preparation containing approximately 10% opium and 1% morphine (the equivalent of 100 mg of opium/10 mg of morphine per mL). It is made by combining ethanol with opium latex or powder. Laudanum contains almost all of the opium alkaloids, including morphine and codeine. A potent narcotic by virtue of its high morphine concentration, laudanum was historically used to treat a variety of ailments, but its principal use was as an analgesic and antitussive. Until the early 20th century, laudanum was sold without a prescription and was a constituent of many patent medicines. Today, the manufacture, distribution and use of laudanum are strictly regulated. Contrary to popular belief, laudanum is available by prescription in the United States and the United Kingdom, although the drug's medicinal uses are generally confined to controlling diarrhea, alleviating pain, and easing withdrawal symptoms in infants who were born to mothers addicted to heroin or other opioids. While the terms "laudanum" and "tincture of opium" are generally interchangeable, in contemporary medical practice, the latter is used almost exclusively.

Quote
So, it was a pretty popular drug. In fact: Innumerable Victorian women were prescribed the drug for relief of menstrual cramps and vague aches and used it to achieve the pallid complexion associated with tuberculosis (frailty and paleness were particularly prized in females at the time). Nurses also spoon-fed laudanum to infants. The Pre-Raphaelite muse Elizabeth Siddal died of a laudanum overdose. (Here’s the Wiki article.)

I used to get spanked quite often. All of them I deserved. I remember one time I was especially bad and mom took a yardstick to my backside. The yardstick was defective and when she hit me with it it broke in half. Although it hurt like hell I broke out into fits of laughter and she broke down and cried.

The worst spanking I remember receiving was when I got caught trying to steal some kid's bike when I was nine.  His older brother caught me in the driveway and wore my ass out.  Then him and his mother walked me home and handed me off to the step dad.  My step dad had a special way of telling me to get my ass in the house whilst he blocked the door.  I ain't got no problem following directions, but  problem  was it hellish following his orders trying to get past him.   When I was 14 he got me with a left hook and before I was able to hit the ground he kicked me with his left leg and put me right back on my feet.  He performed magic in ass beatings much like Pele did in soccer......
