Nominations for AMG Coordinator
« on: August 23, 2009, 06:18:21 PM »
For reasons that this is an international website by it's very nature; I suggest that in the future we have two committees.  One for the European audience, and one for the U.S. audience.  This in no way bars anyone from attending either both or none at all, but this would require the coordinators of both places to try to convene a grants committee, since there are many here who would gladly attend if they only had the resources.

In the past, from my experiences, we have located the AMG in large cities, in the city center.  While this might be a good thing for many of the people on the site, it by the nature of the cost, leaves many out of being able to even consider going to a gathering.  I would suggest in the future that an attempt be made to choose the possibility of an HIV camp, of which there are a few, or some gathering in a less urban environment.  This of course would be put up to a vote here in this forum.

So with that lead in, I would like to start a thread nominating two Coordinators, and my choice is:

Cliff for Europe,
David NC for the U.S.

Thanks Tim.

I would like to volunteer to help out the coordinator with the 2010 event(s).  I have an events + pr background and love to negotiate with vendors if that helps...

I am flattered by the nomination  :) but, since I've never been to an AMG, I doubt I'm the best choice for head coordinator.  Maybe I'm better suited to help on one or more of the U.S. committees?

I'm willing to help out, but I don't really know about negotiating for rooms, perks, etc.  Perhaps we should lighten the load on the coordinator and share some of the 'burden'.  Maybe Dennis can help out, too, without having to tackle the entire thing by himself (although he's done a wonderful job in the past!)

I'm willing to help out too -- but no way could I handle the whole thing.
I'll help out however I can -- but, as Jan knows, my specialty is Scavenger Hunts!!   ;D

Seriously, thought, Boston was so much fun, I'm happy to help plan the next one too.

It's refreshing to see so many members stepping up to the plate! For those who have attended the past 3 AMGs (especially SFO and BOS), you can clearly see how much time and money I put into these events. And while I may bitch and complain about how much work it is, I truly do enjoy it. Especially when I see the smiles on everyone's faces during the week.

I also love seeing so much discussion about the different destinations being mentioned. Securing the hotel and negotiating the rate is probably the easiest part of the planning. However, trying to learn what everyone wants and is willing to participate in as a group truly is the most difficult. Once I have an idea what everyone is looking for, everything else falls into place. These pre discussions will be most helpful to the coordinator.

I would be honored to have my hand in AMG USA 2010, if no one objects. I'd be doubly honored to be surrounded by so many wonderful teamates in making AMG 2010 the best yet!

Would you like the job? Perhpas you would like to coordinate an AMG in your choice of destination; Helsinki!

Or is this just your way of trying to stir up drama?

And why do you care?

Do you have any constructive ideas regarding AMG?

Nope, just confused with the issue of whether you quit or not.  You sure seem defensive though.

Not defensive at all. Just trying to determine the point you are trying to make (if any) and why it really matters to YOU.

Do you have anything constructive to add about AMG?

I'm still not sure if you quit or not.  You keep dancing around the question.

btw, were you mocking my suggestion of Helsinki?  I've been there twice in my life and it's one of the best cities in the world.  Have you been?

No, I haven't been to Helsinki. Would love to go, though.

Yes, I was mocking your suggestion only because I'm not sure Helsinki is a realistic choice for AMG. Do you?

And again, I ask, what does it matter to you whether I quit or not? However, if you must know, I believe you will find your answer in post #8 above.

Oh, only because you do it about three times each and every year.  It's like Cher's "Farewell Tours" which never end.  It's like saying you don't like drama while always being there to feed the llama.

The job gets done though. And without your help I might add!

But once again, this affects you how?

I think we all know who the drama queen is on these boards.

Again, I ask...Do you have anything constructive to add to AMG?

Dearest AMG family of friends,

Before this thread gets too out of hand, I nominate Dennis as the coordinator of AMG 2010.  I also nominate GNYC09, David_NC and bocker3 to work with Dennis in the coordination of AMG 2010.

Do I have a second to these nominations?

I also request that we pass a resolution that requests Miss Philicia to cease "stirring the pot" during the planning of the next AMG event.  His comments are totally nonproductive and add nothing to this important planning procedure.  As Thumper in the movie "Bambi" said, "If you can't say nothin nice, don't say nothin at all."

Can we pass this resolution?

Please extend your support to Dennis and Company as they work to give us the best AMG ever!!!

With respect to all, Ric

Well, you gotta admit, it really does get loathsome, when someone "threatens" all the time. ::)  It's similar to the "come here, go away" syndrome.

Dear All,

Before this thread veers off course again, please re-focus on its original intent -- coming up with a team for the next AMG. There is already evidence here of a wealth of willingness to work for the next  fellowship event, which so many have enjoyed these past years.

Please stay on course and let the other "stuff" fall away. It's great to see members coming together to make plans for next year.

Thanks.

I suggest a leadership/coordinator team where each person is equal instead of just one person laying down the law.   I know several really good travel agents that have been in the business a long time as well that might want to participate.

Allow me to add just one more thing for those who feel the need to condemn my actions. When I first accepted the role as Coordinator for AMG SFO, I had no idea what I was getting into. After all, I had planned numerous itineraries for  group vacations and corporate groups for many, many years in my profession; And could do so in a matter of 24 – 72 hours. How different could AMG be? Let me tell you.

With a typical tour group, I normally worked with one person who...

     1.   Knew where the group wanted to go
     2.   Had a confirmed budget
     3.   Had in mind what they wanted to do during their vacation
     4.   I always knew how many people were traveling
     5.   My job is done once my customer arrives at their destination
     6.   I got paid

With AMG I'm working with numerous people with varying opinions where…

     1.   Choosing the destination is always the most controversial
     2.   Each person attending has a different budget
     3.   Each person has a different idea about what they would like to do during their vacation
     4.   I never know for sure how many people are attending until I arrive at AMG
     5.   My job doesn't conclude until I board my plane to come home
     6.   I don't get paid and planning is done during MY free time.

Can you see how time consuming and frustrating planning an AMG event can be? I treat AMG as any other job or endeavor in my life. And with any other job, when someone makes my job more difficult than it should be, I ponder if it's truly worth my time and effort. This feeling becomes even more profound when those of you who have never even attended an AMG event step in to stir up drama. The same goes to those who have attended an AMG and haven't even had the common decency to thank me for my efforts (there's only 1). Each year I have forgone sleep, time with friends and family, and money to make this event as memorable as I can for EVERYONE attending. For Boston alone, I came out of pocket $328.

Fortunately, after regrouping, I begin to remember the effect AMG has had on so many attendees, and the true reason I enjoy doing what I do for everyone. Seeing everyone smile and friendships made at AMG make all the work worthwhile!

So for those of you who haven't seen the fruits of my labor firsthand, or are at least willing to step up to the plate and help, and continue to wanna stir the pot, I request you pm me privately.

Thank you to all of those who have offered to help with AMG 2010 and have helped with past events!

Dennis

P.S. There has never been one person "laying down the law." This event has always been for the members and by the members.

Hi Dennis,

I have no intentions of starting an argument over this but I'm sorry I really do feel the need to say something about this.

I  know how much you have put into the AMG's you have done so far, I also know, or thought I knew, that you did this because it was something you wanted to do..not because you were forced into it, but because it was something you enjoyed doing, but I was totally unaware that you expected thanks from each of us personally.

Every year you have been thanked on behave of the group by a member who has attended every AMG so far..several in fact..you were also given a special gift to show how much we appreciated your efforts..so to put something like that in a post I think is a bit unfair...just saying and getting it off my chest, and letting everyone know that you have indeed been thanked every year so far.

Hugs

Hi Jan,

I'm afraid you misunderstood what I was actually trying get across in those couple of sentences. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear.

I have been shown nothing bur gratitude from those who have attended AMG. More than I expect or even deserve.

What I take offense to in these forums are those who have NEVER attended an AMG and seen firsthand the work that goes into planning. Yet, they feel the need to come into these forums every year at this time and try to stir the pot.

If you noticed in the one sentence of mine you quoted, I put "there's only 1" in parenthesis. Meaning, there is ONE person who has been to AMG and seen firsthand the work that goes into an event like this. This same person showed absolutely no gratitude, yet feels the need to come into these forums and stir the pot.

So basically what I'm trying saying is if you have no interest in AMG, what this event means to everyone who attends, or have no appreciation to those who work on this  event, then please don't come here just to make trouble and make it more difficult than it needs to be.

Fantastic!  I'll be in touch via PM in the near future.

Certainly,
since I have a furlough day each week,

yes why not

I know Dennis did work extremely hard for our last 3 wonderful AMG's, no small task indeed.  And a few words cannot adequately say thanks sometimes.  I know so many folks expressed gratitude Dennis for your efforts, sometimes to one another.  (You weren't always easy to find you handsome devil you) but were always there for all the well planned and well orchestrated events.

So, as I recover from yet another AMG, (can't believe its been almost a month since arriving in Boston) I am thankful for my friends here, loved ones, my health, my sanity (whatever's left of that)  :D and the hope for the future.

And good coordinators are hard to find (OK no jokes about hard coordinators).

Hi Dennis

Thank you for clearing that up for me..having read and re-read your post (and then talking to a friend asking me if I actually understood what it was you were saying) I admit I did take it the wrong way, and it did upset me somewhat, hence the need to say something...I don't think anyone who has ever attended an AMG can fault the work you have put into it, and I'm no exception, I wasn't having a go at the work you had done for us.

What I would like to know is are you going to be hosting next years AMG..as many would like you too, or are you thinking along the lines of forming a group and for you to help out, I think if we can get an idea of how we want to work things out for next year it would help clear up a few unanswered questions about your part in this...personally I'm a little confused about what is happening at this stage.....but then again I get confused very easily.. ;)

Hugs
Jan

No problem Jan. I can see how someone may have misinterpreted what I was really trying to say. Classes and my teaching practicums are back on for me so I tend to post in haste. I'm sorry to have upset you.

If the AMG destination is in the US I will move things forward as I have in the past. There are quite a few who have expressed interest in helping this year; David_NC, GNYC, Bocker3, and sharkdiver. Ric will of course maintain the wonderful job he does at keeping tally of attendees and their arrival times and dates. I'm hoping Lou-ah-vull or yourself will coordinate the memorial.

If members vote for AMG in Europe...well, I'll initially do what I can to get things moving in the right direction. However, I feel someone in Europe would be best suited in this instance.

One a destination is chosen, things will begin to fall into place.

Dennis -- drop this... yes, consider it a warning. Fact is, you aggressively stated that you were stepping down as the coordinator of AMG in an August 22 note to the board, which was followed soon thereafter by a rather passive reassumption of the coordinator position. You've received praise and thanks from numerous AMG attendees and attendee-hopefuls alike -- please focus on this.

Yes, I will be honored to coordinate the memorial service again and I am sure others will want to assist me.  The last 24 hour cycle has been more "positive" on this always sensitive topic.  I sure hope it can stay this way!

Tim,

I will heed your warning. However, please understand that when my words are used out of context or my actions, AMG, or the work that goes into AMG is attacked, I will stand up and speak out. I will defend my myself. It's human nature to do so. And if that's means risking a time out or being banned than so be it. I'm quiet on many topics on these forums. Becuase of the importance of AMG to myself and many other, AMG is not one of them.

If the actions above were under control here in this section of the forums, I would not have felt the desire to quit in the first place. Many agree with me. Fortunately, the many pms I've received in addition to pubic posts asking me to reconsider spoke louder than the aforementioned. I don't see any thing wrong with rethinking a prior position (which I'm sure many of us have done in our lifetime) or the reason for yourself or anyone else to keep bringing up the fact that I previously resigned.

Maybe it's just time for AMG to become a separate entity from AIDSMEDS. With autonomy AMG would be free to operate without any perceived interference from folks that don't attend AMG.

That said, there has been a bit of revisionist history when it comes to drama and AMG. I've been around long enough to witness it all. Starting with Toronto the drama has almost always been initiated by someone attending the function. We all remember the bloodbath post Montreal with several members leaving, never to return. A big fight erupted after SanFrancisco with our European brothers and sisters and the majority of those members never returned. The first three functions were always held hostage the week prior to the function by a very emotional member, who isn't here any longer. From my viewpoint the agitation was, for the most part always internal.

I have several friends that attend AMG and enjoy it immensely. They must, because they keep going back. However they admit drama is part of any group and they just try and ignore it, enjoying the moment.

I think it important here to explain that this thread was created due to the resignation thread Dennis initiated.  Having a load of experience in planning group events; I fully understand his consternation and frustrations with the planning of AMG.  However, it is imperitive that we all understand that this is a voluntary position, and should probably remain that way.

I in no way wanted to cause disagreement, and yes, I haven't been a participant for a few years, but it is always in the front of my mind that I would love to be an attendee for all the events.  It just cannot work out financially most of the time.  Thus my desire to make this a more economical event.

I trust that you will all work out the details of planning, and that we can truly strive to have events that will be more inclusive of more members here, but how that can be accomplished requires far more involvment on my part, and the inclusion of funding sources outside of this website.  I am just not up to the task anymore.

Dennis, as has been stated, you have done a really good job at making these things happen, but maybe it is time for you to take a break for a while, and see what might come of other people taking the reins.  In the future you might rejoin the team.

This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

tim..

you're the one who stirred the pot on this.  Not Dennis.  He explained his posts to Jan and everyone else in a kind and informative matter...not at all aggressive.  Jan accepted it and we moved on.  Then  you  bring it up again.  What is it with you and Ann lately?  She started a flame fest a few weeks ago and now you.  Maybe you two should give yourselves a break.

Dear All,

I nearly closed this thread down earlier today because it seemed again to be veering in and out of going off topic to become defensive and focusing on matters not to the point of why it was originally started.

Now it seems to be flaming up again. So before the brushfire becomes something more serious and friends get themselves into trouble, I'm going to lock this thread.

The original subject matter was nominations for AMG Co-ordinator. Please start a new thread and focus strictly on that subject and the goal of finding people who want to work on the next AMG.

Thanks for your cooperation.
Andy Velez
