How freak out should I get about this...?
« on: July 22, 2009, 08:11:12 AM »
A warning first - it's going to sound disgusting ..

After lunch today I needed to go to the bathroom (not in any sort of rush, feeling normal), and the stools came out sort of greenish and black in color and very, er, smelly. Needless to say I was really freaking out and called my GP. I did look at them carefully afterward and reported to my GP that they were not exactly solidly black, more like they were still yellow inside but covered by some dark green stuff. No pain, no abnormal bowel movement. He immediately scheduled to meet me first thing tomorrow morning - I know blackish stools can be worrying but he said unless they were accompanied by sharp pain, etc there'd be no need to rush to the emergency room, and they could be caused by foods etc. He asked me to carefully check my, er, next stools.

I did have another small movement a few hours later and though the stools were still a bit black in color they were more green... and not as stinky.

I don't know how freaked out I should be.. my GP has a lot of experiences with HIV and he knows that my ID clinic has a tendency to admit everyone for any possible signs for a problem. Needless to say I am feeling very nervous, not knowing what to think about or what to expect. I feel fine otherwise.. but the least it seems a colonscopy and more tests are inescapable.

Any thoughts .. just so I can get through the night before seeing my GP. The ID appointment is next week..

Well, I don't have any advice to offer but I will say to you that in our realm of HIV ailments & struggles we have grounds to write about not-so-pleasant episodes when we are fearful or freaked out. It's the nature of the beast, so to speak.
Hope it's nothing serious and a passing thing...from a combination of diet + meds ???

You should really try hard to remember what you ate, things like green leafy veggies, such as spinach can cause stool to look greenish and even a little black.

I once slightly freaked out when my stool had red in it, thinking it was blood, until I remembered I had eaten beets the day before.

Make sure you are eating enough fiber as well as probiotics, these are very important for optimal gut health and digestion.

It's hard to say without knowing what you ate/drank previously.  Eating dark green veggies, blueberries or drinking Pepto-Bismol can all result in dark stools.  Take a look at this site, which may help jog your memory: http://ibdcrohns.about.com/cs/otherdiseases/a/stoolcolors.htm
good luck.

Thanks guys... OK, this silly queen has an embarrassing admission..

Actually the night before I had a large plate of squid ink pasta. But I went ahead to see my GP anyway and got laughed at. I can't for the life of me figure out why I could possibly not remember having that pasta.

Squid ink pasta...WoW! That brings back memories. My grandmother used to make it. I haven't had it since she passed away. Thanks for bringing me down memory lane.

I had some a few months ago, I think with lobster.

You should be able to find it at any decent gourmet shop.

Oh yeah, someone suggested xanax but I will save it for bigger panic attacks later... ;D

Now the lesson is not to go google endlessly some apparent symptoms because one doesn't need to go down the list very far to see words like "tumors", "cancer", etc.

I guess it's good to see that I am not the only one who checks out their poo. One time mine was bright red and I freaked. Until I figured out that I did not put enough water in some concentrated kool aid I was drinking...... ;D But not to fear or feel stupid, I do recall a poo thread awhile back.

Don't forget - black licorice will bring you a rainbow of green poo if you eat enough of it.  (Sorry - had to share.)

Now that is a true one. I ate a whole bag of that once and freaked out at the green nature of the subsequent movement. Another thing you should know is that some heart-burn over the counter treatments make things a nice inky black. As does guiness.

Wow, a thread that's a pile of shit that is interesting to read - there is a first! ;)

NB. Any advice about HIV is given in addition to your own medical advice and not intended to replace it. You should never make clinical decisions based on what anyone says on the internet but rather check with your ID doctor first. Discussions from the internet are just that - Discussions. They may give you food for thought, but they should not direct you to do anything but fuel discussion.
