Starting Truvada and Kaletra
« on: June 05, 2009, 10:20:26 PM »
I am starting Truvada and Kaletra in the morning.  I've read all I know to read about this, and know I have a great chance that this will work, but it scares me to death.  Anyone have any advice?

Thanks,
T

My doctor suggested this, because Keletra is doing a study and will pay for my co-pays for a while.  Why do you ask?

Thanks,

I always wonder how decisions on what regimen to follow are made.

I'm on a different PI combo.

I don't know much about Kaletra, except that the reformulation was to help with the digestive side effects. It often is referred to as the gold standard in PI treatment, because of it outstanding performance and durability.

Do you know what the study is for?

There are many threads on the forums about Kaletra. Make sure that you appreciate the possibility of major league diarrhea and elevated lipids.  Lots of other good alternatives exist out there now.

Diarrhea!!!!  No kidding!!  I swtiched from Atripla to Truvada & Kaletra because of depression.  I would rather have the depression.  The diarrhea was horrible!!  Water went right thru me, lost 8 lbs in 3 weeks & had to sto taking it.
I went on Truvada & Viramune & have had no side effects at all.
Just be prepared for the diarrhea!!!

Good luck!!!

I couldn't do the Kaletra and Truvada, that stuff would put me in severe stomach cramps in less than twenty minutes after taking it. It's funny how some can take one thing and not another. You just take what works for you.. I hope it works for you, that's a good deal on picking up the co-pay.

Hey T,  Read the responses you've gotten so far and it sounds like there's not much positive thoughts on the Kaletra/Truvada regime.  Let me be the first to tell you that I have been on this regime since Dec. of 08.  My VL went from 450 k to undetectable and cd4 from 4 to 356 by April.  As far as side effects, had the squirts for about a week, did suffer through the nausea for about a month, but that wasn't too bad. Actually the worst thing was that you have to eat when you take the meds, this caused my weight to shoot up.  Once you've crossed those hurdles, it's very a easy regime.  I no longer have any side effects and feel great.  I just completed the study on the Kaletra/Truvada  study myself.  Check to see if the study is available in your area.  I really credit the study for helping me get into the routine as you have to keep track of the times you take the meds....So be encouraged.  Hopefully you'll have as much success as I have had on the routine.  Feel free to send me a note if you have other questions about my experience on the regime.  Hang in there and good luck.  David
Finish each day and be done with it.  You have done what you could.  Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can.  Tomorrow is a new day.  You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with you old nonsense.

I'm on Kaletra and no gastrointestinal problems so far.
As for the question ''Why not Reyataz and Truvada and Norvir?''...
Boosting Reyataz (atazanavir) with Norvir (ritonavir) reduces the metabolic advantages of atazanavir (no lypodistrophy or no cholesterol changes). So, it's Norvir either way...
Kaletra's side effects may be greater compared to other medications, but it's a very strong medication: my CD4 went from 353 to 1189 in 6 months' time.
