New Results...and my first bottle of Atripla.
« on: May 18, 2009, 04:37:56 pm »
Just got back from the Doc...

CD4- 465
VL- 105,000
Percentage- 12%

My CD4's bounced back and my VL decreased, yay me,  but my percentage plummeted to 12% :(

SO based on my percentage Doc says its time to start the meds. I stopped by the pharmacy and within 30 minutes I had a bottle of Atripla.

So here I sit staring at a rather non distinct white bottle...30 pills that are supposed to begin saving my life. I'm not sure whether I need to be excited or mortified.

So tonight 9 pm May, 18, 2009 the ritual begins and will never end for me (lest we find a cure).

Ok, all drama aside, Im hoping that Im able to give glowing revues about Atripla jsut as some of you have on here, I pray that I am able to tolerate it well. I am prepared for the dreams, dizziness, etc...  but I hope thats all I get with this.

So wish me well!

--Will (scared but hopeful)

Will,
I wish you well. It brought my v/l from 800,000 to 2,993 in 4 weeks. I like it because I know it attacks replication in the brain. I had few definite side effects that lasted a few days. Dizziness and dreams and the high (which lasted longer). I hope it works ou for you.  Keep us posted.

Hi Will,

I wish you as well or even better results than I've had!!

The first night, I think it took about an hour or so to start feeling a little dizzy/drunk. Be careful near the stairs!! ;)

Sweet dreams......

Best of luck!  I had GREAT results, almost immediately.  Like many who post here, virtually no side effects.  The worst part is the part you are experiencing now (the part where you worry about the unknown.)  I still remember the first day I took my first combo (this is my second.)  I stared at those pills (Kaletra and Combivir) for the longest time and then finally realized that staring at them wasn't getting me anywhere.  For me, the worst part was the worrying.

Read the other posts...they are helpful and you don't feel so alone.  Let us know how you are doing and we will do our best to support you.

Of course we all wish you well.
Report on your feelings in the next couple of days, if you care to.
I felt just super after one night of that magic.
If you don't feel your HIV now, then you probably won't feel such a dramatic improvement.
Hopefully, it'll be just neutral.

Oh, by the way, timing isnt important with that stuff. take it more or less the same time everyday. Dont get all anal about the timing if you feel its cramping your style.

better with a snack, but low fat. which will keep your perfect pecs in order, anyway.

you know that stuff is the bomb, dont you. tomorrow you wake up with several logs less HIV in your blood. remember that when you take your morning piss. Its all washing away

Matt,

Welcome and best of luck on your first dose of Atripla.  We all wish you well.  Keep in touch and ask questions.  There is a wealth of knowledge and experience from everyone here.

I've been on Atripla for 6 months (18 Nov 08) and the only reaction I've had was the first few nights.  Some vivid dreams and dizziness if I got up during the night -- Everyone has different reactions though.

Hang in there and keep us posted.

Good luck, you're on the good stuff.  Chances are you'll do fine.

Make sure to select a dosing time you'll remember every day.  It can't hurt to set an alarm clock.

You'll be fine.  The first month of any med can be non-fun, but not even always.  And if it is there are many other options out there for you, just not all in one pill.  In fact, in a few months you'll wonder why you made such a fuss.

ps: you now have 25 minutes left

Good luck!  I think you'll find it won't be as bad as your mind :)

Atripla's pretty amazing, when you let yourself think about it.

wow what a night.

I dont think I slept much, I was up every hour or so, right now im VERY dizzy and kinda have that 'out of body" feeling, but at the same time I feel like I want to go run around the block a few times, mind mind is going 100mph, im going crazy sitting here, I think I may be having a mild Manic attack, (im Bipolar) hmmmm. I dont know maybe this feeling is normal for everyone, but I think  i may put in a call to my Psych to see if I need to do anything to head of a full fledged manic attack, but then im afraid he will want to pull me off the Atripla, so maybe I will just ride it out.

Anythoughts?

Yeah I had the dreams, no biggie really. I had the night sweats, again no biggie. The thing that strikes me most is I had a raging erection on and off most of thenight, which is unusual for me.

I hope you have discussed the bipolar issue with your doctor. That would be a possible issue with the sustiva in atripla. I would call your doctor to discuss  keep us up to date.

Thanks Matt, Yes, she is well aware of my BiPo, however what concerns me (NOW) is she didnt really address the possibilities of what could happen. Im hoping the feeling was just a one off and wont happen every morning, Im not going to call the Docs at this point....

It felt exactly like that time I did 6 whiskeys and 15 hits of Cocaine within 2 hours (many years ago), just a fucked up not good feeling.

I am feeling better now, more relaxed, actually quite relaxed and the dizziness is much better now. I can actually walk without bouncing off the walls down the hall. I fell very at ease and happy at this point, yay!

I felt very fucked up the first couple of days. I did have depression which my dr attributed to my diagnosis. My therapist did not think it needed to be medicated. But I have read that the sustiva can make a very small percentage of people depressed.

You'll adjust. I take mine at 11pm every night unless I go out on a weekend then I take it when I get home, sometimes as late as 2 or 3am. My doc says it's OK with Atripla.

I set an alarm in my iPhone to go off every night to remind me, but the pills and water are on my nightstand so it's hard to forget. And don't eat at least two hours before taking it. That'll help the dreams. I've never had a bad one, but have had weird ones.

I've been on meds for 6 weeks now and it's quite routine for me and easy.

Good luck!

Feeling like 6 whiskys and 15 snorts of cocaine, I would say does not sound like an everyday average side effect, even of a first night.  I think you have a pretty well tuned CNS if you are diagnosed bipolar.  Sustiva's CNS side effects are well known.

To some extent this is a mind over matter (medicine) kind of situation.  You do kinda have to chill and see if you can make this combination work.  Its comforting to know that if it finally can't work for you, there are plenty of others.

So I would keep in VERY close communication with your mental health therapist.  She a doctor? Psychiatrist?

I forced my psychiatrist and doctor to communicate about the way they were managing my CNS side effects of sustiva.  The shrink kept giving me different things to deal with anxiety and stress, because the ID said the effects were not HAART related but emotionally related.

THe drugs the pyschiatrist gave me, with trial and error - she figured out they were not having an effect that they should, and therefore it was more likely that it was simply HAART related. The ID gave up and changed my combination and I didn't have those side effects anymore.

I was dizzy the first couple of mornings, but not whisky and coke dizzy! If that continues so strongly please dont hesitate to talk to your doctors.

Yes, I am more than a little apprehensive right now, i would like to have a better night and morning. I am keeping my fingers crossed but I think the Atripla combined with all the other meds im taking (seroquel, zoloft, lamictal, Trazodone, Atarax)  might be creating the weird stuff. Doc said to take everything as normal and just add the Atripla in before bedtime, which I have done. I am definately making the call to the Psych and my ID if I have another morning like I did this morning.

I do remember waking up crying last night because I had a vivid dream about my deceased father, and was somewhat depressed thereafter, but then I went straight into the Whiskey/coke feeling this morning, looking back it looks like a classic BiPo rapid cycle.

Mecch, you are absolutely spot on about the mind over matter thing, This morning the more I thought about my weird side effects the worse it got, and soon my mind took over and I thought I was going to freak out, but thankfully I was able to finally get a hold on it.

Staying positive about tonight because I know/feel I am kicking the Virus right in the teeth!

Hugs to all! (((((all)))))

My first night was very similar.  Constantly waking up, then feeling groggy and out of it the next day.  Vivid crazy dreams that night.  The second night was much easier, and I haven't had a bad night since.  I also make sure not to eat within two hours of dosing.  I'm on my second month's worth now, and I feel an increase in energy, and I'm glad I'm on it.  I hope things work out for you tonight!

I had a much MUch better night, still had the crazy dreams, but I actually slept for 5 straight hours which was nice. I still have the groggy headed fog feeling all day today but at the same time I am full of energy which I havent been for a year. I have an appt with the Pysch tomorrow to go over my issues and maybe switch some of the BiPo drugs around.

But you know what? All of my side effects are trivial when you think back to what the people in the 80's had to deal with, God bless them. So Im going to stop my bitching because I know we have come along ways with HAART, I Thank God that I have all these miracle drugs available to me, even with the side effects, and that I DONT have to take the early HAART meds and have to deal with what they dealt with.

- Grateful Will

Starting my 4th day on Atripla.

Things have settled down and I am very pleased with it after my rough start. I still have the dreams but have gotten used to them. I am sleeping more and more every night. The fogginess is lessening each day. I have more energy now than Ive had in the last year.  I have this overriding feeling of well being (whether this is just in my mind or an actual result of the Atripla Is a mute point because the end result is I feel good).

Atripla rocks ;) For those of you who are anxious over starting Atripla, Dont be!

Hey WillyWump,
Congratulations.
Your overall feeling well being is both emotional and physical.
Virus in your blood has been massacred. Imagine the relief.
(I felt instantly better after starting.)
I hope the dreams either go away or turn into something to look forward to, soon.
Have a great day.

Hey Will,

Very encouraging thread here!!!

Glad to hear the Atripla is working for you thus far and you are adjusting to the initial side effects.  Everyone has different reactions to the meds, but you seem to be hanging in there with no major complications. You also have a great attitude :)

I've been on Atripla since Nov 08 and just went to undetectable levels.  I'm sure you will be very surprised with your next lab results and getting your VL  to undetectable levels.  Once there, your body can start healing.

Keep on the meds as scheduled. Live and eat healthy !

Keep us posted.

Well, you dont just go out and "get it". You have to have a prescription from your ID Dr, and usually only after many blood tests.

Frankly, I do not know the cost, however I believe it is quite expensive.. I am receiving SSDI and also ADAP, so I get it at no out of pocket cost for me.

Sounds like you need to visit your doctor, they can help get you going on it. There are so many different programs out there to help you pay for it.
