Don't assume
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:59:15 PM »
I know I shouldn't assume anything but....
Last night, as I was falling asleep and had my bedroom window open and I heard a guy ask, "Which one is 1016."  "This one," someone else responded. My bedroom is on the side of the house and the conversation sounded close. I didn't hear anything but my mind started racing.

I just got home from work when I noticed the window from the "movie room" - the garage I had converted into a room - was broken. It's double pained so the outside glass was broken.  There's a golf size hole with cracks running throughout.
I get gay catalogues, TLA and some other X-rated catalogues that are sealed but I've always wondered...I get other peoples' mail in my mailbox all the time, how would someone react if my catalogue was placed in their mailbox, someone who is not so gay friendly, opened it and saw what it was. That pissed off person would know my full name and my address and if it's someone young, I'm sure it would be known to other friends.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the broken window because of what I heard last night.
I know I shouldn't assume but....

First things first.  I would call the police( for what it's worth ) and report the broken window. Ask the police to do some investigation around the property.

I had the same reaction as Ray; call the police.  And give them as much detail as you can about the conversation you overheard too -- but maybe not so much your speculations on it -- just be credible, factual and let the police know what happened

That is scary.

I would call the police after I had put away my catalogs. (They could have been after something else: movie room= TV, DVD Player?)

I had called my insurance, the maximum they can pay is $175 so a check has been mailed out. I called several glass companies to get some estimates and only one company returned my call which sent someone out to the house and looked at the damage on Thursday. Right away he said it was a bb gun.  We talked for awhile and I decided I wanted the whole window replaced for a tinted picture window. Total cost of that $585 - it's a good size window. I agreed. He drew up a contract, I signed it and it will be ready in about 3 weeks. I was in no mood to try and get different estimates from companies who might or might not show up or return my phone call.
I get home today and wouldn't you know it, there's another damn hole shot at the window. I got pissed and called the police. Police came out, made a report. Unfortunately he said there was not much he could do since there were no suspects nor evidence of a bb gun used but he did say he noticed a gang of young adults up the street from where I live. The police left, I looked at the window more closely and I did see a bb among the small pieces of broken glass.  DAMN!
Tomorrow morning, I'm going to go to the neighbors across the street from me and on either side and ask them to keep a look out. Not only for my house but also for themselves.

DAMN! I seriously hope Karma comes around and bites whoever did this, in the ass.  Little prick.

Hey,

For security reasons, you should think about getting yourself, some motion sensor lighting, around the house.. Might not be a bad idea.

You might want to get a post office box.
I pay like $19 for 6 months.
Kids in the neighborhood the last few Summers liked to
tamper with everyones mail. I was going to get a locking box
but thought a post office box would be much better.
Then just have the important stuff sent to the box #.

it is best to have a camera recording anything happening outside your place so if they do it again, you may have recorded evidence for the police.

I'm going to start shopping around for a camera because, two times now, it's no longer a coincidence. <<Deep Sigh>>
What bothers me the most is that it isn't only me that this vandalism is affecting, it's also my mom. I bought this house for her. It was the least I could do for everything she's done for me and it hurts me to see her so worried. There's a small part in me that feels I brought this upon myself. I know that's a stupid thing to think but I can't help but think that.
I'm going to take care of it.  For starters, I'm canceling any and all subscriptions I have to the catalogs I receive. The mail system here just isn't very trustworthy. I've already called the sub station to complain about always receiving the incorrect mail.
The damage has been done and I don't want these actions to continue or escalate.
It's always been me and my mom now, all I want is for her to feel safe in her home.
