Pope hates condoms??
« on: April 22, 2009, 03:30:39 AM »
After the statement the Pope made in Cameroon during his recent visit there, there
was alot of condemnation and controversy about the Popes statement. The media
responded with several caricatures of the Pope in connection with condoms and Hiv/aids.
Is it legally Ok for someone to send these caricatures to friends, or even makes new caricatures?
Do you know a link with these caricatures?

Are you asking whether it is legal to send a link to a joke about the pope?   Unless it's pictures of the pope drilling a five year old boy, my guess is yes.

hi dtw,
maybe the Pope doesnot use condoms because he has no wife. What about people whose
partners are not faithfull?
What about couples with one partner being hiv+?
What about sex workers?
What about other people who occassionally have sex?

What about millions of Popes followers who donot use condoms,ca 25millions
have died from aids, and another more than 33 million infected. Every year
another 3million new infections.
The Pope should take the responsibility for part of these deaths.

I hope the Pope never comes to Africa again!!

of course the pope is against condoms. ;) The Catholic church, for literally hundreds of years, has been for "sex only for procreation" and has been against all forms of prophylactic, sex outside of marriage and non-reproductive sex. it's part of their canon - and part of the history of the world. The Catholics have been teaching the "abstinence only" idea since medieval times. (actually this belief is a basic doctrine in most religions) I doubt this pope (or any other one) is about to change hundreds of years of church history or church doctrine as they believe the "word of god" to be infallable and immutable (un-changing).

Unfortunately most of your examples are already considered a "sin" by the church, so of course they are not going to change their policy/doctrine to accommodate a sinner being able to sin safely. I say all this from the prespective of being reared Baptist (and attending baptist schools for over a decade). I've grown up to believe that all religions are cult-like, and as such most have some pretty "wacky" ideas that don't conform to the reality of the modern world; therefore these institutions aren't about to change the opinions/beliefs that they have held for hundreds of of years - even when faced by the facts.

Of course the Pope hates condoms.  There are 3 reasons for this:
1) Without condoms homos, fornicators, druggies and the multitude of others sinners will get aids and die as he believes we should.
2) since you are only supposed to have sex in a godly sanctioned relationship (married) there is no need to use condoms. Since married people share a home and more importantly expenses it means that they can give more money to the church than single people who bear the brunt of living expenses on their own.
3) Condoms when used in marrage prevent births. That would be a bad thing for the church as he needs kids to grow up Catholic so he can get more money and to secure the future of the church.
I have gay friends who are well connected to the catholic church.  They visited Vatican City and were amazed by two things. 1) there are vaults under it that have so many valuable items that the church owns.  They figure that if they were sold on the private market that most of the worlds poverty would be eradicated.
2) there was so much gay sex going on there. They extended their stay there by two weeks just for that reason.

What else is new from the Pope or the Catholic Church?  An outdated patriarchal religion that stresses penitence for imaginary sins over the celebration of life.  Funny he/The Church is not ok with condoms but is ok all those pedophile priests that they shielded.

Being a priest is the best job in the world if your a pedophile. One you've molested all the kids in your area the church moves you all expenses paid to a new area so you have a fresh batch.

The Pope has always disappointed me, especially regarding condoms, because he refuses to acknowledge the death and carnage that could be prevented by using condoms.  He promotes a book and theology, that were written by man and just because he says it is the word of God, well you need to walk the walk first.  The Vatican is the richest single entity in the world.  I have read estimates of their treasures, being in the hundreds of billions of dollars, not even counting all the property they own all over the world.

Somehow, a religion that dresses its leader in silk with slippers, seems sorely out of touch with any century, let alone the 21st.  The handling of pedophile priests should have been enough to bury this religion once and for all, because there is no where, in their own scriptures, where God says its OK to molest children.  The fact that the Pope refuses to see the reality of suffering in the world, makes him totally irrelevant in the modern world.

This is simply not true - the Catholic Church has been a supporter of the rhythm method for a long time, and also supports other 'natural' family planning methods. This is a typically hypocritical 'teaching' of the Church.

Gotta love this study which found the ryhthm method may kill more embryos then oral contraceptives. lol. http://www.physorg.com/news67783446.html

kinda splitting hairs aren't you? most of what I wrote is basically true as this thread is about condoms - an "UNnatural" form of birth control.

from http://www.epigee.org/guide/catholicism.html
Quote
Birth Control
Since sex is meant for procreation purposes, married Catholic couples should always be open to the possibility of a pregnancy. While family planning is allowed, the use of contraceptives, both hormonal and barrier, are not. Likewise, tubal ligations and vasectomies for purposes of contraception and sterilization are not acceptable, although they may be done out of medical necessity.

Barrier methods of birth control, such as the condom and the cervical cap, along with hormonal contraceptives, like the birth control pill and Depo-Provera, are thought to interfere with the act of conception. Specifically, they prevent the egg from being fertilized by a sperm and in some cases may inhibit a pregnancy further by preventing the implantation of an egg. To Catholics, purposely stopping the joining of an egg and sperm is thought to be a sin, therefore these forms of birth control are not accepted.

from http://www.catholic.com/library/Birth_Control.asp
Quote
Ignoring the mountain of evidence, some maintain that the Church considers the use of contraception a matter for each married couple to decide according to their "individual conscience." Yet, nothing could be further from the truth. The Church has always maintained the historic Christian teaching that deliberate acts of contraception are always gravely sinful, which means that it is mortally sinful if done with full knowledge and deliberate consent (CCC 1857). This teaching cannot be changed and has been taught by the Church infallibly.

and baptist, fundamental baptists, basically believe the same thing - sex outside marriage is wrong, and sex that is not for procreation is questionable. these doctrines have been around for centuries (centuries for the catholics, and close to two centuries for the baptists) and have only had limited changes/interpretations within recent history. (and really these changes are man made changes to the "divinely inspired word of God" and by many in those religions not viewed at the strict canon teaching of those religions.)

Regardless, the general point I was making is that most religions, protestant and catholic, frown upon sex outside marriage. So of course the leaders of those religions are never going to encourage condoms for fornicators, prostitutes and various other "sinners".  To think that those leaders would ever condone going against what their churches have taught for years (like thinking the pope might say that condoms are ok to use) is something that simply isn't going to happen. If they were to change their beliefs on such a whim, then just what would they be beliveing in?

I'm not splitting hairs at all Leatherman, or trying to be provocative. Rather, I was trying to demonstrate the utter hypocrisy of the catholic church and it's teaching. There is a huge distinction between a teaching that sex is only for procreation, and the hypocritical teaching of the catholic church that supports 'natural' family planning methods ie sex for pleasure, while at the same demonising condom use and the pill for the same purpose.

The irony is that it would appear that the rhythm method actually allows for fertlisation of the egg in many cases but the embryo is not viable and dies. Thus, the rhythm may be responsible for the death of a large number of embryo's - the church and anti-abortionists try to equate such wanton destruction as murder, if it is done in a clinic under medical supervision.

Rather, I was trying to demonstrate the utter hypocrisy of the catholic church and it's teaching.
cool. i can understand that. ;)
Trust me, having been reared a hard-core baptist, hypocrisy is THE reason i learned to start paying attention to what they (the church - which includes it's members as well as it's leaders) say and what they do - and those are two vastly different things. LOL

I'm all for people having standards and morals; but I'm also for those same people living up to them if they are going to preach those beliefs. But if they don't, then don't expect me to either. (That's why underneath it all, there are some very devoutly religious people I know whom I greatly admire and respect for having the temerity of holding firm to their beliefs and living by them)

I'm not splitting hairs at all Leatherman, or trying to be provocative
However, quoting a whole paragraph of mine (that mainly mentioned the church's general belief in "abstinence only" and explained that the church has held this doctrine for centuries) then saying that that "simply wasn't true", sure reads like you were slamming my point of view >:( - which is the actual, factual, historical doctrine of the church.

Now whether they are living up to that or not is another issue entirely. U1195 wrote like he thought this pope should actually change the church's doctrine. After centuries of holding onto that kind of doctrine, I just can't imagine a change happening, whether they are hypocrites or not. You may feel free to make your point about the hypocrisy of what the church does; but please don't do it by disparaging my valid historical point of what the church says. ;)

while at the same demonising condom use and the pill for the same purpose.
another reason why I was put off by your comment ("simply not true") and thought it was directed towards my comments was that U1195 listed situations that had nothing to do with birth control per se; but rather reflected the non-procreative sort of sex (fornicators, promiscuity, prostitutes, infidelity) that the church has always and will probably always frown upon. While in just over the last 100 yrs or so, the church might have allowed for "sex for pleasure" rather than for pre-creation in married couples, they had not changed their beliefs at all about adulterers or "whores".  ;)

Historically, it wasn't until nearly the 20th century that the Catholic church began to change it's opinion at all about allowing even "natural birth control". (see the wikipedia comments below from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_family_planning) So historically the church has held the beliefs as I expressed them, and what I wrote was quite "simply true" as those are the long-held beliefs of the church.  ;)
Quote
Documented attempts to prevent pregnancy by practicing periodic abstinence do not appear again until the mid-nineteenth century, when various calendar-based methods were developed "by a few secular thinkers." The Roman Catholic Church's first recorded official statement on periodic abstinence to avoid pregnancy is from 1853, where a ruling of the church's Sacred Penitentiary addressed the topic of periodic abstinence to avoid pregnancy. Distributed to confessors, the ruling stated that couples who had, on their own, begun the practice of periodic abstinence—especially if they had "legitimate reasons"—were not sinning by doing so.

I personally think all churchs are simply glorified cults, to be honest. That's why I believe that it's silly to be troubled by anything the pope, or church, says or does. However, I will agree that the things the pope and church says does have an impact on society. I think, although it's the much harder task, that the best method to bring about change and to counteract these ridiculous, out-dated ideas is to change one person at a time by rationaly explaining to individuals in these organizations and bringing them out of the churches.

In my own case, I'll never be able to influence the doctrine of any baptist church here in the carolinas (just like u1195 will never be able to change what the pope says, especially when u1195 is wanting the pope to say something that is against the church's long-held doctrine); however, I can speak (and have spoken) to many people about the problems with the teaching of the these churches and those people have quit blindly following.

I find it strange that an institution, headed by the pope, and run by only MEN who deny themselves the normal bodily function of having sex, should be the end all on the subject of sex, never mind on condoms…

It’s foolish, that married couples will go to their priest or pastor for marriage counseling… What in the world would a priest, pope or nun know about sexual relations between a man and a woman? Unless their having sex themselves…

All religion are strong promoters of hatred towards gays and lesbians and straight women…

These are the people that claim the bible, as the word of god, a book that was written by men  who believed the world is flat… Duh!

Yes it’s me… Thinking of changing the name to “Million Dollar Baby” Seeing that inside the past three years that’s close to the medical cost my insurance has had to pay out for hospitalizations, surgeries, radiation treatments etc.

But I’m still here, ornery as hell, most importantly, above ground… Oh yes, and feeling wonderful. I don’t stop in here that much anymore, but it’s nice for me to do so now and then…

Been trying to post pictures in here, of the pope in his younger years as a Nazi sympathizer, but can’t seem to figure out just how to do it correctly… Last time I posted in here it was meant to be private, but screwed it up..

Terry, your avatar is very à propos for this thread. :)

And yes, the cats will probably never change their stance on three subjects: family planning (unless you use a preposterous method like the "rhythm"), celibacy for priests (absurd), and allowing women to lead (another topic that seems simply obsolete in this day and age).

I don't know why but from the title of this thread I fully expected to see a porno.  I'm really disappointed.

LOL, I also thought about a "barebacking pope" for just one second.  I am going to hell.
