I want to have a baby with my wife
« on: April 20, 2009, 01:02:03 PM »
I have been positive for a few years and my wife and I want to have a baby. I have been undetectable for 6 months. My last numbers were 776 T cells, undetectable and 22% cd4.

Can I naturally conceive a child with my wife?

I think your question would be best to be answered by a physician. Is it possible? probally... what are the risks of passing the virus to your spouse? and or possible child? someone who works as an OB GYN check with your docotr... or medical staff...

Rjane,

It is totally possible for you and your wife to conceive naturally, but exactly how you go about it will differ depending on whether or not she is also hiv positive.

I'm short of time at the moment, but if you give more details I can tell you more. You can also do a forum search. I'd suggest using advanced search and use a term like "baby" and only search the Living and Women's forums. (Please note - as a man, you should not respond to threads in the women's forum, but we won't mind if she joins and posts a question or responds there. Thanks.) There have been several poz/neg couples here who have conceived, so you're bound to find a few threads on the subject.

my x wife is negative.  We were married 10 years.  I found out I was positive just a few months after we were married and my son was born.  I got on meds and shortly was undetectable.  We then started having unprotected sex and she never contracted the virus.  She never never did get pregnant again, but that had nothing to do with the virus, maybe the meds, who knows.  In the November/December 2008 issue of positively aware, there was an article regarding sexual encounters with undetectable HIV positive men.  In the article, it was stated "in January 2008, an important and prestigious panel of experts from the Swiss Federal Commission for HIV/AIDS bodly pronounced the first-ever consensus statement saying that HIV-positive individuals on effective antiretrovoral therapy and without sexually transmitted infections are sexually non-infectious".  The article did go on to say, however, that the topic was "hotly" discussed at the International AIDS conference in Mexico and was rejected by a group of joint Austalian experts.  But in my own personal experience, my wife stayed negative during our entire ten year marraige and we never used condoms.

Hi Rjane, thanks for the additional information. I kinda thought that was the case, but didn't want to make assumptions.

I've found you some forum threads and various links that you should find helpful. And please, do come back to this thread to ask more questions about your specific situation, or more questions about natural conception in general. The links I've posted should give you a good idea of what's involved.

First up, you will probably appreciate following the journey positive forum member Dingowarrior and his hiv negative wife went on - and ended up coming home with a baby girl:

Hi Rjane,

My husband and I are also wanting to have another child He contracted HIV just over a year ago, taking Atripla and has been undetectable for about 9+ months, and I'am negative. I was happy to see this post as I have been trying to do all my research and homework on it.....glad to get some more insight on it from others.

I guess my dilema now is trying to find a Dr. that will be supportive in our decision....that seems like it will be pretty tough.

Good luck to you & your wife
