Dexamethason + Atripla
« on: March 07, 2009, 10:44:27 PM »
I was inquiring if there were any known side effects for using Dexamethason as a mouthwash to get rid of canker sores while on Atripla.
Any advise would be welcome.

H -- I ran it through Check My Meds (a useful "cool tool" on this website), and got the following interaction:

Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction:    dexamethasone (dexamethasone) and Atripla (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir)
*** The interaction is due to efavirenz which is a component of efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir (Atripla)

MONITOR: Drugs which induce CYP450 3A4 hepatic metabolism may reduce serum efavirenz levels and antiviral efficacy. MANAGEMENT: If efavirenz must be used concomitantly with CYP450 3A4 inducers, close observation for evidence of altered efavirenz effect is recommended.

Since you're using a mouthwash version, I seriously doubt it would affect the blood levels of the Sustiva which is one of the 3 drugs in Atripla.  You should be fine combining these.
