I'm usually pretty happy about getting older. I mean, once I was in the hospital on my 34th birthday about to die from PCP. I really didn't think I'd be alive to see 35; but, lo and behold I made it. WooHoo! But I was still really sick and ended back up in the hospital a year later on my 36th birthday and once again was on the verge of dying from pneumonia. Things were so bad that time that I checked myself out of the hospital AMA. I didn't think the hospital was treating me right and I went home to either die or to get better. Thankfully, things worked out (WooHoo!); otherwise I wouldn't have been here to entertain you with my tale. LOL

If things had been different last March when I was turning 46, I would have made a much bigger deal about how I had survived and managed to stay alive and out of the hospital for a whole freaking decade after all those doctors (and myself) has been so sure my death was only days or hours away. Instead, last March, I spent my last birthday traveling between my house and the hospital through a weekend blizzard, while an uncertain future lay before my partner who was just diagnosed with AIDS and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Little did I know as I turned 46, that my partner would pass away barely a month later and by the end of this past summer that I'd be facing homelessness.

Now as I'm about to turn 47, I've been trying to reclaim at least some of the life I lost when Jim died and trying to return to being happy and amazed that I'm still alive and getting older. I was already amazed that my numbers stayed stable throughout all the upheaval of this past year. I found a reliable housemate, a rental house with enough room for us and the dogs, and the provisions to move my belongings, my doggies and what was left of my shattered life to this new home. Last year when Jim entered the hospital, the stress pushed me into ending a 110-day streak of not smoking. In trying to get that back on track too, I have planned it so that on my 47th bday (Mar 14th) I will have quit smoking for 47 days. Kewl!

I've also finally reached the end a three-year SS disability check reduction to repay an overpayment (a major factor in losing two homes, two cars and the utilities over the last three years). WooHoo! Starting this month, with the money I will no longer be paying for cigarettes and the 33% increase to bring my check back to it's normal amount, my yearly income will be increasing from ~$4000  to  ~$9000!! Although I'll still be poor enough to be 15% below poverty level, having my income more than double this next year, I should feel like I'm swimming in untold luxury.

All in all, my birthday this year will be a million times better (even if we do have a blizzard in Ohio) than the birthday I spent last year in the hospital not realizing that my partner would be dead soon and that my whole life would be changed. If you'd care to read about how my SS reduction came about and how it affected my life over the last three years, along with seeing some pix of the cockers and kitty, please visit my site http://reigningpages.com/leatherman and check out the March update for the full story.

Happy Bday to all my fellow Pisces and you Aries!
