B-12 Shots?? What do you think?
« on: December 07, 2008, 01:16:58 PM »
Hey All,
I am wondering your opinions on B-12 shots? If you get them what do you think ect. I have researched this all over the web as well as looking back on as many past forum posts I can, but wanted to hear from those of you that take them.

I used to get them in the 90's, before HAART.  I'm not sure I see the need in using them nowadays.

There's a place for them in life.  Why are you thinking you need massive b infusions?

I doctor taught me how to give them to my wife during one of her horrendous pregnancies.  I absolutely hate needles and can barely get into the doctor for lab draws so I stick with swallowing b-vitamins but a good dose of b-everything would probably do wonders for my mood at this time of year.

Hi Caliguy,

I don't quite understand, what would the reason be for taking B12 shots instead of eating tablets?

Hello,

I have never had them. Has your doctor done a blood test to determine if you have a Vitamin B-12 deficiency ?

Take care---Ray

From http://www.cigna.com/healthinfo/hw65706.html

Treatment Overview
...At first, you will get shots of vitamin B12 (100 to 1,000 micrograms [mcg]). You may get a shot every day for 1 week, then once a week for a month, and then once every month. Or your doctor may have you take pills (1,000 to 2,000 mcg a day) that contain a higher dose of vitamin B12 than a regular vitamin pill.

My guess though is you could go to the pharmacy/health food store and find a bottle of B-12, and take enough tablets to make up this 1,000 to 2,000 mcg and see how it works.

I'd be more concerned about getting a balance of B-vitamins.

Hi Caliguy,

I don't quite understand, what would the reason be for taking B12 shots instead of eating tablets?

Oral doses are not absorbed well in digestive tract.

FYI, when I was receiving B-12 shots in the early 90's and it was kind of standard, I was also on AZT as it was the only thing people had available.  It was thought that AZT decreased levels of B-12 and/or a deficiency hastened the onset of AIDS:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B05EFD9123DF932A35751C0A961958260

NOTE: this article is dated February 1997, just a couple months after HAART became available, so it would have been conducted entirely before HIV treatment completely changed.  I'm only offering it for context.  It should not be taken as an indication of what is proper treatment in the year 2008.

The bottom line is that if you are not deficient in B-12 then this is a non-issue and I would caution newly diagnosed people not to try and reinvent the wheel.

I have too few red blood cells, and apparently the ones that I do have are large and healthy. i dont have anaemia, but my blood cell tests show that My red blood cells are lower than they should be.
my dr suggested Folic acid, and vit B12 injection.
The tablets are not well absorbed by the body so Im going to have a weekly Vit B12/b6 coctail injection for four weeks then I will have it twice a month until my body is able to actually use the Vitb to make more Red Blood Cells.
Its quite a painful injection and i dont recommend it to anyone who doesnt really need it...unless you quite like pain and discomfort in your ass!! HeHeHe!

Hi,

Oral doses are not absorbed well in digestive tract.

That's true, which is why the oral B12 supplements are typically a much higher dose than the B12 RDA. That way there is still a tiny part that makes it into your blood while the rest is lost.

The B12 supplement I take has 1000 mcg (1mg) which is listed as 16,667% of the B12 RDA. This is a typical B12 supplement, nothing special.
