I think i'm infected
« on: October 15, 2008, 09:29:37 PM »
Hi I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some thoughts on my situation, I can't sleep because it's really getting to me.
3 Weeks ago exactly I got drunk at a party and afterwards I had sex with a prostitute, not something I'd normally do, I don't know what came over me. She put the condom on and gave me head then I had vaginal intercourse with her for a few minutes, I couldn't come so she gave me a handjob with the condom still on for a few minutes more and eventually i finished.
The next morning I woke up hungover and noticed I was a bit raw maybe because she was quite aggressive and I was a bit concerned.

A couple of days later I got a cold, swollen lymph nodes in my neck, runny nose (which im pretty sure was just a cold) and a couple of days after that my throat felt kind of tickly which seemed to stick around. Then, after a few more days, about 1.5 weeks after the encounter I noticed i had swollen lymph nodes in my groin and began to feel generally very ill, I couldn't eat and at night I'd just lie in bed not sure if I was sleeping or not and I had night sweats, I noticed lymph nodes near my shoulders too. I felt very bad for about 5 or 6 days. In this period I went to see the doctor and he felt my lymph nodes were swollen and looked down my throat but I was too scared to mention I was concerned about HIV and he made me an appointment for a bunch of blood tests.
Now, about 4 days after feeling very ill I feel almost normal except my nodes are still swollen and my throat still feels slightly irritated.

I understand what I did was very low risk but the symptoms are very strange and concerning for me, from what I've read on the internet (terrible idea i know) they sound really similar to the early symptoms of hiv.

I'm finding this very difficult to deal with, I was suffering from depression before all this but now i'm just overwhelmed, I don't know what to do.

Thanks

You didn't have a risk of contracting HIV.

Isn't there a chance if there's vaginal fluid on the condom I could somehow have been exposed to it?

Sorry I know I must sound really irrational, I just can't stop thinking about it and it's still a while off until I can get an accurate test done.

sefi,

Condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection. You're worrying unnecessarily about vaginal fluids. It's cold and flu season and there are plenty of bugs going around.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST OVER THIS SPECIFIC INCIDENT,Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple. And remember, you need to use them with ANYONE, not just sex workers.

Thanks for the response.

I can't seem to ignore my symptoms however, I keep checking my lymph nodes and my mind wont rest.

If I get tested in a couple of weeks would the result be reasonably accurate?

Thanks again, I won't post any more I promise.

sefi,

If you feel unwell, see a doctor. In the meantime, keep your hands OFF your lymph nodes because feeling them all the time can actually cause them to swell.

As long as you test three months past your last UNPROTECTED incident of anal or vaginal intercourse, it will be accurate. If you have never had UNPROTECTED intercourse, a test at any time will be accurate as you're not in a window period.

You are NOT in a window period over the sex worker incident.

Please read post #3 again and again until it sinks in. You didn't have a risk.

Hi again...

Sorry about this...

I was just reading the transmission article and it said:

"For men, HIV must enter through a cut or abrasion on the penis, through the lining of the urethra inside the penis."

I remember afterwards I noticed a slight abrasion on the head of my penis, it was small but I'm pretty sure the surface was slightly damaged, this was probably why I said I felt a bit raw after. Is this the kind of thing that sentence is referring to?

Does this change the risk factor much?

It doesn't change a thing. You don't contract HIV from getting a blowjob. PERIOD....Saliva is not infectious and is also contains enzymes and proteins that inhibit HIV transmission.

Damn I just can't seem to accept it.

I'll be amazed if I have hiv because of how rare it is for someone to get it from what I did.

But i'll also be amazed if I dont have it and these symptoms are all just a big coincidence.

sefi,

This forum is FULL of threads where the poster was convinced that their symptoms meant they'd been infected. The vast majority of them test negative. We've only ever had a handful of people posting in this forum who tested positive, and they were ALL the receptive partner of anal or vaginal intercourse.

YOU did NOT have a risk. If you feel unwell, see a doctor. Whatever is going on has nothing to do with hiv.
