matty.the.damned has been banned
« on: September 12, 2008, 09:43:44 AM »
After careful consideration, we’ve decided to ban Matty from the forums.  Given how long he has been an active member here, we did not make this decision lightly.  While the last straw was a small flood of Moderator Reports from various members yesterday afternoon, the banning ultimately happened based on the totality of his actions here, along with all of the reactions and reports we’ve received from many, many members over the years.

We realize Matty has many friends here, and that some will be very angry at this decision, but please consider the following points:

1)  Matty has received more complaints via Moderator Reports than any other member by a very large margin.  This is not a function of his length of membership.  For instance, if you only looked at any one or three month period, he would typically rank as the most complained about member during that period.  This has been the case during his entire membership here.

2)  Many of the complaints we’ve received have come from NEW members (including yesterday’s complaints), some of whom left the forums because of Matty.  We view these loses very seriously, and they are the primary reason for this ban.

3)  We have bent over backwards NOT to ban Matty, mostly because he’s been a very helpful member of our “Am I Infected?” forum.  He is the only member that we bent our Time-Out Rules for by giving him one more T.O. than currently allowed.  He was told at the time that we couldn’t bend the rules any further, and that he wouldn’t get any additional warnings before final action was taken.

This ban is permanent, and won’t be reversed.

Love him or loathe him, is it appropriate to invite discussion on a banned member? We've never had that opportunity before. In fact we were always warned not to discuss a banned member or face the consequences. I've never seen this much attention devoted to a member being banned before. The deed is done, case closed, move on.

He helped me a lot when I was a new member. I like reading his comments and I think he is very funny and insightful, although sometimes I don't get him, maybe that's because my first language isn't english. I will miss him.

I agree with the wiener dog. A thread like this is just asking for abuse, especially since he's not here to defend himself (something that the moderators have repeatedly pointed out whenever discussion of a banned member takes place on these forums).

I find it entirely inappropriate. I'm sure all of our feelings are obvious and I'd think that if we had anything serious to take up with any of the mods on any issues we should contact them directly instead of using a public thread.

Hal, Sharkdiver and Mouse:

You're absolutely right.

While we felt it necessary to announce this decision, there's no need for further discussion.
