Bumps....
« on: September 11, 2008, 12:24:59 PM »
So Tuesday I shower and as Im showering I find about 5-6 bumps on my lower right hip.  They look like pimples so I pop them, apply acne cream, etc like I would a normal acne outbreak.  Today they are painful, have scabs on them and the area around it bright red.  I'm thinking this is not a normal acne outbreak and thinking that its something else, am I on the right track to thinking its something else???

Now this might be a left field idea but have you considered talking to adoctor? Doctors are wonderful people, they've got all this like medical training and stuff . . .

I know it's a way out and whacky idea but you might just wanna give it a try. :)

Really?

You have a rash on your behindus so bad you have to ask our advice but you don't need to worry your doctor with it. Even though you have an appointment today.

:)

You're luckier than some, I think you are.

I agree you probably don't need the appointment either but you'll be kvetching to the good doctor nonetheless.

Tell us how it goes why not? ;)

Funny you should mention that, I was going to post a general topic about that today....the sarcasm....not your painful bumps. It seems to be a common thread with a select few.

Oh honey! I like you. I like you a lot. :)

But we're not dealing with likeable things, rather we're addressing the issue of Roy's slitty kitty. It's all bumpy and diseased.

Do you think he should see his doctor? I do.

I just don't get it...aren't we all in this together, so to speak? If we wanted to be insulted and made fun of then we would post our questions and concerns in a forum where it is to be expected to be put down.  These types of comments have popped up way too many times since I joined only a few weeks ago. It sure doesn't make one feel welcome.

Raroy,

It could be a number of things (most of them quite benign). Folliculitis comes to mind. It is "relatively" common in positive folks. But I'll repeat Matty's advice (in a kinder, gentler spirit... ;)..)make a appointment with a dermatologist...

Skin is technically our largest body organ, and as it's by nature completely exposed it's logical that an immune suppressive medical condition like HIV/AIDS will easily cause things to flare up, certainly at lower cd4 counts.  Most are generally not anything serious, though they can be rather bothersome and at times even mentally damaging if allowed to fester (dermatitis, for example).

Make sure whatever dermatologist you go to is experienced treating HIV patients, or you're likely to end up going to several of them before you find one that knows what they're doing.

Hip, head, ass. Whatever. From what I can see the distinction is a fine one.

Kid, if it was herpes you'd be in some doctor's waiting room shrieking like a banshee and pleading for pain relief not thrilling us with the details. Believe Matty, he knows all about herpes.

But this is neither here nor there. You have pimples on your ass. Attention has been paid to you.

Now go and see your doctor, there's a good lad. Jenny might go with you and keep you company. ;)

By the way, you should listen to Philly. His head is a vast expanse of skin.

It sounds a bit like what I would know as 'dhobi rash' which is normally an allergic reaction, or fungal infection, which strikes in areas of excessive sweating or where your underwear rubs on your skin (under the elastic etc). Either way, a visit to your doctor would be appropriate.

I've never found herpes to be that painful, matty-the-damned.  More like just mildly irritating.

But as for the original poster's seeking of advice on this forum rather than at the doctor's office, keep in mind that doctors cost money (often a lot of money), while internet chats are free.

I would suggest trying some hydrogen peroxide and Betadine before running to the doctor.  Apply the hydrogen peroxide sparingly at bedtime with a 'Q-tip', and then after it dries off you can apply a bit of Betadine, leaving it on while sleeping.

I'm impressed that you got an appointment so soon - in my experience it usually takes about a week to be admitted, in which time one might as well try the obvious treatments and possibly avoid the expensive of the doctor.
Please, just call me Berners.. or Baron.

LordBerners -- that was your last post in this thread.  If you ever suggest to another forums member NOT to see their doctor, we will ban you from these forums.

We realize that's your Standard Operating Procedure, but it's not normal, and could even be advice that kills.

Matty -- back off on the mockery.  Unless you are already on friendly terms with someone that is willing to laugh off the flip way you answer their questions, then skip the flipness.  Don't post in this thread again.

Hey Roy,

I used to get bumps on my legs and sometimes my arms when I was younger and treated them much like you have and had gotten the same results.  In my case, they turned out to be ingrown hairs but now... there hasn't been any acne creams in my house for a few decades.   ;D  Have the best day

Raroy

Here are my suggestions:

1..if you find bumps/pimples apply some antiseptic cream..and leave them, if they get bigger go see a doctor.

2..if you pop/pick a bump/pimple it's bound to scab over and get painful..you have opened up the skin allowing all kind of nasty little bugs to get in there, if the painful continues..go see a doctor.

3..We can't see your butt/hip so there is no way we can tell if it is anything other than a painful pimple..so again go and see a doctor.

If you are really worried about this then only your Doctor can treat you..he will be able to look at them and tell you what he thinks they are..we can't.

So, I haven't been on here in months because I just got fed up with the negativity and bitching back and forth.  I logged on today and, of course, the first thred I opened is a question from someone seeking some advice.  His first response from Matty-the-Damned which, true to form, is negative and bitchy.

I'm done and I'm over this!  This is not a safe and comfortable place for people to come forward.  It's a damning and confrontational space that many use to put down others in order to feel superior.

Good luck to those of you who come here for true support...I hope you find it.  To others like Matty...get some help for your sadness and insecurities and if you can't be helpful and supportive without being bitchy, just shut up once and for all!

Talk about bumps.. sign...

If I take a photo of my back it would look like chains of volcanoes under the Atlantic Ocean. I continuously have bumps/pimples in many of the same spots - I tried popping them (painful and nasty, not a good idea), not popping them and added cream, washing my back with a scrubber, etc, and they still come back. After so many years (yes, since my late teen) my back now also looks like a map..

I discussed with my doc once and he strongly advised not to pop them because it would open up the skin, i.e. giving an entrance to other nasty bacteria to infect the body.

I would also appreciate some ideas on how to deal with them...

I really didn't see the need for your post other than you just wanted to vent, replying to the OP would have been more helpful, you talked about being nasty and bitchy so I don't think this helped..do you?

Komnaes..I don't have much to offer but I don't think using a scrubber on your back would help much, I think it would only irritate the spots you have on your back..also soap can have an effect on some acne problems, sometimes it best just to use clean hot water...sorry that's all I have for you.

Thank you Peter!  And thank you to everyone else!

So my doc says that its one of two things one more likely then the other...Shingels or MRSA, he thinks is more Shingles.  However we started treatment for MRSA on Bactricim, we are waiting on lab results to rule them out.  So in the mean time its swallow an antibiotic.  The hardest thing for me is the realization that my body is succeptiable to these, this is my first OI and I'm having a hard time with it.  Facing ones mortality is never fun.  I know I'm not going to die anytime soon (hopefully).  Just concerning.

The other good news is that my CD'4s came up 40 points.  Still not where I want them but all things considered I'm okay with it.

Hello Komnaes

I'm going to assume, safely I hope, that the pic in the avatar is yours and that you spend a good amount of time using equipment to body build. If all of that is so, then I'm going to ask if you are ever exposing your skin, unclothed, to contact point of the sweat/bacteria of others, that might be one factor in what's going on with your back. Good to use an anti-bacterial spray and thoroughly wipe the surfaces dry before making contact. And, wear a shirt if you don't already.

If you had more hair on top of your head, I'd offer that there are hair conditioners that have the residual value of varnish that can accumulate on the back and make holy volcanic hell out of skin. Just in case you do use product, I'm including this. If you do, bend forward and rinse with lots of water so the water doesn't run down your back and of course, you don't want the water to be running down your face as it's still carrying the product within it.

I'm with Jan on not scrubbing vigorously or using a loofah or hacking at your skin. With your athleticism, perhaps you need to bathe more frequently and perhaps use an astringent.

Finally, while you mentioned discussing it with a doc, you didn't note whether or not it was an ID doc or a dermatologist. If you've not seen a dermatologist, it sounds as if you're overdue before you end up with more scarring, continued infection and eruptions.

Em

I am glad you got some answers. I know either way it is disheartening but you are on treatment and hopefully it will go away soon. Take care of yourself!

Neither shingles or MRSA qualify as HIV OI's.  However, depending on your cd4 count, the recovery time from these can be more difficult.  That's really the issue, not HIV infection itself.
