Local HIV Support Groups
« on: August 01, 2008, 12:04:12 PM »
Forgive me if this topic has been discussed before - I am new to the POZ forums.

I'm looking for information on HIV Support Groups in the area of South Florida, particularly for heterosexuals, but if it helps others interested please respond with information about hetero, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender HIV Support Groups wherever it applies and in whatever area you live.

In a Support Group I would expect the typical structure of a group established by common identity, regular meetings, agreed on rules of governance, casual or formal, and possibly social and community activities.  Avoiding the issue of being HIV+ and pretending life just goes on without any special changes besides doctor visits and meds is really to live in denial.

In my 11 years with HIV I have experienced the lack of knowledge and advice that comes with trying to "tough it out" on your own.  One misses many opportunities at a more abundant life when searching for answers in all the wrong places and this can lead to avoidance, denial, escapism, addiction, and wasted precious years.  Lifestyle and health decisions one makes early on can greatly affect lifespan and the quality of that life.

If I can be of help to others, I would gladly participate in gathering and updating listings of HIV support groups in South Florida or around the country here on this thread or in another appropriate medium.

Thanks,
thorn

hi thorn,
I recently read a post here of someone having some luck with The United Way helping her to find a local ASO.  You can also contact some hospitals in your area by contacting their infectious disease units.

Welcome and good luck with your search!

2000 - seroconverted
2005 - cd4 350, VL 113,000
3/06 - started sustiva/truvada
3/08 - cd4 1,300 VL >50(undet.)

There is a link to an ASO finder on the Home Page of this site.  Put in the Zip code.   ;D  Have the best day
Michael
