We Did It!!!!!! Peace Corps Alters HIV Policy
« on: June 27, 2008, 10:03:41 AM »
Good news......here is an important update on the Peace Corps HIV policy for volunteers in the field:

To: LGBT RPCV listserv participants:
From: Mike Learned, LGBT RPCVs

I  just received a reponse to my April 14 letter to Peace Corps Director Ron Tshcetter regarding the Jeremiah Johnson case. As you may recall he became HIV positive while serving as a volunteer in Ukraine, and medically separated solely because of his HIV status. This resulted in a letter from the ACLU, and much bad press. Basically Peace Corps has revised its policies regarding HIV as a medical condition affecting placement and retention. It is clear though that there will be limited opportunities with people living with AIDS to serve or continue to serve as volunteers. In the future volunteers who acquire HIV while serving will be evaluated, and not be medically separated soley because of their newly acquired HIV status. Director Tschetter said that he provided me with the same information that he recently gave the ACLU as advocates for Mr. Johnson. I have not seen anything addtional in the press. If any of you have seen something, please reply with a link or ???

It IS great news. And yet I can't help being disgusted and enraged at the ignorance and injustice of yet another HIV-phobic situation in which the prejudice becomes codified like business as usual.

OK, one step forward this latest. But DAMN!
