Netflix recommendations
« on: June 23, 2008, 04:12:21 PM »
I got a basic subscription to Netflix last October, and it's turned out to be real gift to myself. I've seen many fine movies that I never would have thought of seeing or which are available only on DVD. I've enjoyed many American movies through Netflix, but here are some mostly foreign movies you may not know about and which I thought were terrific.

You can find out more about any of them by visiting the Netflix or imdb.com websites (International Movie Database).

Walk on Water (Israel)

Summer Storm (Germany)

Vitus (Switzerland)

Yossi & Jagger (Israel)

The Chorus (Les Choristes) (France)

The Kite Runner (USA/Afghanistan)

The Namesake (United States; Indian director & actors)

High and Low (Japan) - 1963 movie directed by Akira Kurosawa

Alan.

Yeah, you're right.  There is a lot of good stuff that just wasn't available before.  I joined Blockbuster's basic program a year ago and I'm enjoying it also.  I don't have cable and I've heard a lot about "The Wire".  The last 4 weekends I've rented out 4 of the 6 CD's that cover last year's schedule.  It really is an incredible show and something I would have never seen had it not been for my Blockbuster subscription.  What I like about Blockbuster is that if you return the rental you receive in the mail back to the store directly instead of the mail, you get a free rental.  So I've been watching The Wire for free.

I've enjoyed Netflix immensely. They are usually pretty good about gauging what movies you would enjoy. I've only recently began taking advantage of their Watch instantly section.
We have been watching season one of Dexter. Its cool.

Plus I have rented some older flix like Grapes of Wrath. I normally wouldn't have rented it had I been browsing at the store because all I ever looked for at the store was new releases.
Its been cheaper entertainment than renting locally because I don't get late fees and I don't have to drive to the store.

I have Jumper and Shattered right now. I already watched Jumper. It was good.
My Queue right now has The Eye, August Rush, The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Librarian as my next choices. Unless of course I go in there and change it. LOL

Wendy,

Thanks. I'm going to look up your selections. I never heard of any of them, but some of the movies that I've enjoyed the most are ones that I had never heard of.

At first I was a little put off by Netflix telling me that I'd like certain movies. I didn't like being told what I'd like, especially since when the recommendations are based on a computer program. But actually, many of their recommendations have turned out very well.

I'm going to have to look up your movies too. They are titles I am not familure with.

LOL I guess Netflix will let us know if we have the same taste in movies.
