Ideas for Cheap Getaways?
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:52:46 PM »
I need a cheap weekend getaway to relax. My neck muscles are killing me from stress. I was thinking about going to a gay campground and read and relax in the woods. Where do you guys go to getaway?

I love Key West and Palm Springs, and any beach. Love diving, but all those are expensive. Especially living in the mid-Atlantic region.

Ideas???

try Rehoboth (or something like that) Beach.

Never been there but I've heard of it.  Seems to be plenty gay and not too far from Washington

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest.  The gay beach is (don't laugh) right off Queen Street.

sacinsc, I'm sure if you do some google-ing you can find a list of gay/gay friendly B&B's there.  Are you specifically looking for gay beach ideas, or just any kind of day trip?

Another gay beach idea is Asbury Park, NJ though that's quite a bit longer drive from DC:

We do the gay campground thing for our getaways.  They can be fairly cheap, but that depends on whether it's over a holiday and your definition of cheap.  We don't stay in a tent, though.  We had a pop-up camper but have recently 'graduated' to a travel trailer (used, of course).  I wouldn't mind staying in a tent in the woods, but we go monthly that it'd be a LOT of work.

Hey buddy,

Are you sore because of all of the puking from your brother's wedding?  just kidding.

I don't know what to tell you, cause you are way over there.

Because of the gas prices and people are traveling closer to home, all of the campgrounds around here (and true for most of Ca) are booked up until Sept. Which really sucks because it will be harder to go on last minute camping trips.

good luck with that,

Sharkie

Oh, here's an idea!  Go to Sandy Hook (Gunnison beach is the only nude beach in the mid-Atlantic south of NYC that I know of) and stay at The Cottage, the local gay B&B.  Then you can also take the seasonal ferry service for a day trip into Manhattan:

Looks pretty good. Rehobeth seems tired to me. Everyone goes there....even my ID doc. I kinda want to just relax. And the water is WAY to cold for the SC/FL boy to get in. If it isn't 80 I dont get in without a wet suit!

The camping seemed like the best bet, the Cottage sounds really nice to. I need to find out how far it is from DC.

I found one campground in Upper PA, its like 3 1/2 hours away. All gay, nude place....nude isn't exactly what I am looking for...more relaxing. They do have cabins you can rent out too. David, where did y'all go camping?

It would probably take you 4-5 hours to drive from DC to Sandy Hook, depending on what side of DC you live on and traffic, of course.  But the water isn't going to be any better there than in Rehoboth (which I agree is tired).

I know of two gay campgrounds in NE Pennsylvania: the Woods and Easton Mountain, though I've not been to either.  That's as far a drive for you as Sandy Hook, and both of these would be fairly void of other DC people, and instead attract more NYC/NJ boys and Philly boys.

Maybe us poz people can do something like vacation house exchange? Lodging is always a big expense on any getaways, other than camping of course. I got this idea from watching the movie "holiday". We basically knew each other through the board so there is build in trust, and gay people are usually neat, etc, so it's better than any random straight strangers with a bunch of kids.

Depending on how far you want to drive, this place :

http://www.flsawmill.com/event_6-27-08.htm

Is about an hour north of Tampa. Ed and I have never been there, but quite a few of our friends have, and they enjoy it. You would probably want a cabin, but you have to book well in advance. This place is also about an hour and a half (maybe less) from the Gulf of Mexico and Clearwater beach.

With prices the way they are, we may be looking into this for a brief getaway this summer.

I like to go tubing. I usually go to Nantahala, near Bryson City, NC. If you like the outdoors there is a lot to do in the area. Be sure the weather is going to be warm because the water is cold.
