Really big problem with getting meds advice please
« on: June 05, 2008, 03:25:03 PM »
short version:
my insurance company decided to put a cap on meds $7500.00 per year well I reached that in March when I got my last 3 months of meds.  Now I can't get my meds for the next 6 months because luck has it I make too much money for any assistance either thru the state or the drug companies and don't make enough to purchase my meds.

So, my question is.....Do any of you know of any other way to get assistance?

I'm afraid if I only take my meds 6 months out of the year I will become resistent.

Thanks for any info.

C.

Sorry to read about your situation Poodlelover. I'm from Canada and am not familiar with other avenues you could pursue in the US. I'm sure others will have some suggestions for you tho.

And welcome!

C, where are you and what do you have in the way of AIDS service organizations in your area? This is a fairly common problem so there has to be a solution that will allow you to get your meds.

C - What a pain!  I hear ya.

My local clinic has a new program where they will pay for meds after you pay $8k in one year.  Maybe a local HIV services group can offer something similar?  I'd call around.  It probably depends on grant funding.  Definitely get a social worker through a nearby ASO!!  They are amazing even if you do make bank.

If you cannot get any support from your ASO or from the state, I'd look into your state's high risk insurance pool or guaranteed insurance programs.  Probably not your ideal, but it is a Plan B.  This is how I get my insurance.

Best of luck!!

Poodlelover, can you restructure your insurance policy?  I had to do that recently when they raised my premiums and my drug "coinsurance".  Basically, I added another $50 to the quarterly premium increase in order to keep the "coinsurance" where it is now, saving about $1800 a quarter in drug costs.

They still cut my other benefits though, the bastards.   >:(

Poodle, I would definitely take Andy's advice and get in touch with your local Aids Service Organization.  They should be able to steer you in the right direction.

I have tried everywhere I can think of even my doctor has ran out of ideas.  I have however found a pharmacy in India i can get sustive for $80.00 per month and combivir for $75.00  I'm just a little leary of it but guess it can't hurt to try.

The insurance is in stone nothing can be done the union voted on the contract and it passed.  It was either vote for it or strike and no one has the balls to strike.  It was great insurance until a foreign country (spain) bought them out then everything when to hell in a hand basket.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

Sorry i wasn't clear on that last post of mine.  A company in Spain bought out my husbands company where he works not the insurance company.  Once they took over the company they made these changes in insurance.
