Shingles Vaccine
« on: August 19, 2007, 03:28:09 PM »
Can anyone tell me WHY the shingles vaccine is not meant for people of an immunocompromised status? I read that its not for people who HIV Disease, people taking corticosteriods, or people who have had organ transplants, but it doesn't say why these groups shouldn't take it.
Personally, I <3 Vaccines and like to get as many of them as I can. I mean that seriously too.

basically, cos it (Zostavax) is a live, attenuated vaccine - so in people with compromised immunity, it can cause more severe side effects (like serious rash) and "disseminated disease" -ie, it may overwhelm the immune system, causing the emergence of the thing its supposed to be preventing.  (Also, hasn't yet been properly evaluated/studied in this group of patients)

and, er, far as i know...it's only licensed for use in the 60+ age group...& i don't think you's quite there yet  :)
