Getting rather horny

I'm starting to worry about how horny I'm getting.

It's really quite hard in spots
 . . . especially where I directly touch the floor.

And really sensitive to cold too -- I went walking outside this morning when it was still only about 40 out and it it was so painful I ran back inside for shoes.

I don't think I've changed shoes or the amount of time I spend barefoot or anything but there's about an extra 5 layers of skin on the bottom of my heel and almost that much on the ball of the foot.  Anyone else have this?  Is this a PN or HIV thing or just (sigh) more aging?

I know.  Wut?  You had me at horny, of course.  But then it sounded more like you were talking about "boney"...like your feet experiencing pain striking the ground.  But the part about extra layers of skin is throwing me.  Calloused skin?  You need to explain this a little more.   Not following.

Good call, Tim.  Boney; not boner.

I have read several posts on this forum regarding folks complaining about the lack of fat on the bottom of their feet. It is something I have experienced however I thought (until now) it was due to aging or just bad shoe design. I quit walking barefoot outside years ago. Every little thing I stepped on hurt.
The only thing I can suggest is start shopping for shoes with extra padding or buy shoes a half size bigger and place gel or foam insoles in shoes. It's what I do, anyway. Makes a big difference with the gel insoles.

Assurbanipal, I think it's probably more an age thing, coupled with going barefoot. Get yourself a good pumice stone and start using it every time you shower. Make sure you keep your feet well moisturized as well, because thick callouses, when allowed to dry out, can crack and become very painful.

I constantly have problems with foot pain.  But I was diagnosed with pn years ago.  I also have problems with callouses.  I buy an exfoliator to use along with the pumice stone and try to use it faithfully.  I also buy an extra-thick lotion, such as Eucerin, to use exclusively on my feet.

So... an update, the horny feet / callouses do seem to be a seasonal thing, controllable with a little lotion.

But the foot pain gets worse every year.  At this point, if I wear any shoes that aren't tennis shoes the ball of my foot is pretty painful.  I really noticed it the other day when I put on what used to be my favorite pair of shoes for a job interview -- those shoes used to make me feel like dancing, but now I just want to limp after about 10 minutes. 

It feels like a big bruise on the ball of my foot (worse on the left foot).  Its worst in the morning -- I have to put on tennis shoes to walk around in the AM now.  It seems to get better as the day goes on -- and with the right tennis shoes I can still run.


I know some people have talked about losing the fat pad on their feet -- but how do you know?  It's always felt like muscle over bone, now it feels like a bruise over bone.  And in theory that would be a sign of fat redistribution -- I have noticed that the veins in my temples are visible now, but the doc assures me it doesn't look like temporal wasting.  And I haven't been on any drugs that are associated with wasting.  While I did do a little wasting when I was in the hospital, that was before all this and anwaay I regained all that.


At any rate I thought I'd look into the gel inserts Mike mentioned.  Any recommendations? (Where do you buy gel inserts??)




(And come on folks, isn't it nice to think thunter and mjmel are back, even if just for a moment?)

A, you should be able to find the gel inserts wherever you go shopping, like a drug store, in their, well, foot section.

I lost the fat padding on my feet years ago, and never, ever go barefoot, even indoors.  I learned that years ago.  And I get horrible callouses, to where I have to use a callous shaver to get them off. 

There's no magic answer to help the feet.  Let me know how those gel inserts work, if you get them.

Thanks BT -- drugstore, sounds so obvious once someone says it  :-[   guess I just never spend much time inside them recently what with mail order and the drive-through prescrption window (and I'm definitely a guy type / caveman shopper -- target, make the kill and leave with the meat   ;D  )



So I went to Walgreens and picked up a par -- see what Mike meant about getting a larger size shoe, ball of my foot is much more comfortable and I can walk without holding on to rails or needing a cane but rather a squeeze.

Well, thought I'd post the resolution to this drawn out story.  Feels a bit like one of those mystery diagnosis stories from the NYTimes Magazine.

I tried the helpful suggestions BT and Inchling gave me up above and a few others too,  but over time the foot pain kept getting worse.  So I got a referral to a foot doctor/clinic.

They looked at my medical history and immediately took foot xrays from various angles -- but there were no bone spurs or stress factures.  In fact the osteoporosis didn't even show up in my foot xrays. (Strong ankles and weak wrists I suppose  :))

Instead it was Morton's neuroma, probably from overdoing the walking and the stepper when I was getting my lungs back in shape.


I had to stay off the feet as much as possible for a couple of weeks and get some injections above the toes.  There were some blue gel pads that stick to your feet, and a rather odd menthol foot spray.  Finally orthotics.

6 weeks later, everything is pretty good -- there is a little pain when walking, but it doesn't linger when I stop.  I am allowed to run again too and today I went out running. Everything hurts -- but in a good way.

It's perfectly acceptable to resurrect a thread you yourself started when it is an update of your original subject matter. It's quite another matter to resurrect an old thread when, for example, the OP hasn't even logged on in freaking ages.

You can buy the gel inserts in most drug stores - they're usually marketed for women who wear high-heels. Over here, they're usually found in the girly sections, such as the areas where they sell "feminine" products or hair thingies and they're often found in little packets attached to strips hanging on the end of shelving units. Sometimes you can also find them in those end-of-aisle Scholl foot-care displays. 

They're designed to fit into the toe section of the shoe and cover the area where the ball of your foot lies. They do help. Now if I could just get a set of training wheels, with them and the gel inserts I might actually be able to wear heels myself. ;D

(Strong ankles and weak wrists I suppose  :))

Actually I wound up with a pair of these sorta cool gel pads that stick to your feet that I had to wear for 6 weeks, and I still wear them when I would otherwise be barefoot.

My foot doc gave (sold) them to me  -- they go on the arch just in back of the ball of the foot, and through some wonder of modern material science whenever they lose their stickiness you wash them in cold water and it comes back.

It seems rather odd to put something on your skin and then put socks over it -- but it helped a lot.

I used to have a pair of inserts just like yours that stuck to your skin and they were really cushy - and more expensive than the regular kind. Unfortunately, my daughter nicked them and I haven't seen them for sale anywhere else again since then. I gave up trying to wear heels anyway - I got tired of toppling over even when I hadn't even had a drink to soften the fall. ;)

I was very glad to find out it wasn't going to require surgery -- up to the foot xrays the (non-foot) doctors who felt around were thinking probably bone spurs brought on by the osteoporosis drugs.

No doubt it was preemptive guilt feelings on their part   :)

Foot surgery is no picnic, but at least they give you good drugs. Miss P, ask them to give you extra lidocaine injections after the surgery and then you won't even really start feeling any pain until the day after surgery.

I'm 2.5 years post left foot surgery and the right one needs to be done this fall...probably November.

Good on the OP for finally getting some relief!

They won't schedule me until I get an EMG test because the podiatrist thinks there's neuropathy mixed in, and the hospital is very backed up right now. I'll have this in 2 1/2 weeks, then back to the podiatrist at the end of the month so I guess they'll schedule the surgery then. Alas, they're backed up with slots for surgery so it would be September at the earliest.

btw, x-rays showed an abnormally high arch that's putting downward pressure on my metatarsal bones. Whatever it is it's progressed to the point that I audibly yelp several times a day. Also keep in mind that I don't possess a car and live in a fourth floor walk-up. Life isn't very enjoyable right now.
