PRECANCEROUS ANAL CELLS... VERY WORRIED
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:34:35 PM »
I have posted my recent experience here: http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=19322.msg251779#msg251779

Quick recap:
- Went to the hospital for frequent bleeding from back passage
- Was diagnosed with anal fissure and internal warts
- Had -painful- surgery on 20th Feb.
- After a month new growth on the outside and inside
- Went to the check-up and was told that the growth is due to the scar "over-healing" itself and that ecess skin will eventually go by itself.
A month later and nothing has changed.

Because of this excess skin my passage has shrunk considerably and going to the toilet is very difficult. Therefore I bleed everytime I go because of the strain.

- Surgeon also said that although no cancer was found in what was removed (warts), they discovered some pre-cancerous cells and I need to attend a new visit with a different specialist which will take a new biopsy.

Understandably, I tend to worry very much about these things and I have searched on the net for info on anal cancer and it seems that I am very much at risk as it's more likely to develop in homosexuals (tick!), hiv+ (tick!), hpv+ (tick!) and people who had other minor problems in the area such as fissures or haemorroids (tick!).

I didn't really understand what "pre-cancerous" cells mean... can someone explain? I am really worried.

Just go to a good colorectal specialist that does laser work on what is called HPV dysplasia

Read more here:  http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/HPV_6805.shtml

While dysplasia can develop into cancer, it's easy to have this monitored and it not develop into this.  You'll just be having it checked on regularly now going forward, so don't over worry.  I've had one abnormal cell growth area removed once about 4 years ago.  The procedure isn't the most fun thing in the world -- I'd recommend taking some xanax right before your appointment (in fact my doctor had me do this) and then they'll give you something like hydrocodone for the pain the next few days.  My pain wasn't as bad as what I've read some here have experienced, but it's still a bit to deal with.  I had to stay home and slip feminine hygeine products up my underwear, and sleep on a towel in case some blood came out... don't want to ruin those expensive 400 thread count sheets.

Thank you Philly,  what you're saying makes sense.
I guess it's just this word "pre-cancerous" which gives the impression of a bomb waiting to explode: pre-cancerous... which will inevitably lead to cancer... that's the way it sounds to me anyway...
Perhaps I am overanalysing this.

Yeah, it freaked me out at first too.  Just use the word "anal dysplasia" instead.

Sadly IMO most HIV patients are not being screened for this like they should be.
