ADAP/Ryan white--Generic HIV Meds?
« on: March 16, 2008, 02:37:16 AM »
Ok. I dont get this. Good ole GW Bush is funding Africa with I think around 15 billion bucks to help fight AIDS with generic forms of hiv meds so it's alot cheaper. Um, why not let programs like ADAP/Ryan White also use these generics so that funding for these programs doenst run out or spread thin like reported in these forums in alot of states right now. He allows generic forms of these drugs to be used in patient assistance programs in other countries but only allows brand name drugs and patents to be kept for hiv meds used for patient assistance programs here in the United States. This makes no sense. Wouldnt states have any easier time of using the funds they get to help people if they only had to spend like 1/8 of the cost of hiv meds that they spend now?

You seem to be quite concerned about this.  I think you should contact your congressman/woman and talk to him/her about it, express your concerns to the proper people.

There are a few generics available here. Retrovir is one, I think there is a generic Videx too, but I'm not sure.

As for Shrub, maybe if we all fell on our knees and prayed to his god, he would favor us with money too.

For the same reason that friggin' Bush won't allow SS to negotiate for lower med prices with the pharmaceutical companies.  Can you believe the government forces those on SS and SSDI to pay full price?  Why?  So the companies can reap in the benefits.  Only the VA is allowed to negotiate the price of meds.

Yeah, some meds are just about at the point of going generic.  By the way what meds are you on now?

And when do you lose your ADAP benefits?

Well I go in tomorrow to redo my ADAP and I will find out if i get cutoff or not. I am self employed and this is all gonna be determined what they actually consider my income. What I bring in before business expenses........or net profit after business expenses. You never know what you are gonna get when u go into apply for these services or what they are gonna do. I am on combivir and viramune. I have been the whole time I have been poz ..for 8yrs. I also take AndroGel and Acyclovir which i get thru adap/ryan white. Luckily over the years i've built up a 4 month backup supply of my meds so if i get turned down tomorrow i still have 4 months left. I also found an oniline pharmacy that sells generic combivir and viramune. I can get a like a 40 day supply for 250 bucks total combined for both of them. I have done alot of research on generic hiv meds and I havent seen anything bad. If i have to go that route i will b/c i dont want to have to switch my meds by going and doing one of those drug studies.

Good Luck!  Hopefully, you won't have to go that route.
