Sharp end to my perfect day
« on: July 16, 2006, 08:08:21 PM »
It has been a pefect sunshine day, with friends, the beach, swimming and a brai as the sun set with the cats lazing in the Bergamont, and now a friend rings to tell me my very good friend and colleague passed away aged 54 in London tonight from complications of decompensated liver cirrhosis related to her Hep B infection.  Possibly the result of her starting HIV treatment before Christmas and a serious hepatitis flare-up.  She is survived by her current and former partner, one of each gender, and two children, one from each family.  I will miss her, and dammit there's tears on my keyboard.  Dunno whu I share this with you right away. She was an amazing woman, an activist in her own quiet way and the only person who I believed when she said "I understand you completely"

Goodnight sunshine.

I am very sorry for your loss. She sounds like a remarkable woman.

"Goodnight Sunshine"

Raise a glass of wine, let the tears flow onto the keyboard, remember her quiet activism.  It won't erase the injustice or the pain, but it seems like it would be a fitting tribute.

Newt. Sorry to hear of your friend. I think that sometimes, when one of us in the "family" goes down, a little piece of us all goes with them, and we wonder when it will be our turn. But we continue on hoping for the best and praying for the miracle that thus far, has failed to arrive. I hope that you are able to grieve for your friend, sometimes I think that I can no longer be affected by the passing of someone, because there have been so many. But I hope that this is not the case, after all grief is one of the things that make us human beings. Remember her well, and send her off in style. Love Carl...

I'm sorry, Matt.

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

Dear Matt,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and the loss of an Activist.  When I lose a friend, as we all do, I listen to Elton John's "Talking Old Soldiers."  When he sings, "do you know what it is like to have a graveyard as a friend"  I fall apart and put the record away until the next time.

Matt, thank you for letting us know of this very important passing.  I am sure that her spirit will be with you and all you need do is ask, and she will be beside you..

Last nght we went to the beach n had a fire.  There were readings.  I wrote the valeditction.

Memory

Every supper I eat, I eat for you.
This is a lie. A good laugh will forget,
or perhaps a headache or fine weather.
Sooner or later, I'll set the extra
place setting back in the cutlery drawer,
lay the knife, fork and spoon into their slots
in the felt-lined canteen in the sideboard.
But (my mother always said at Christmas)
it's the thought that counts. And there will be days
when a summer shower pretends to real rain
against a clear sky.  Just for a moment,
thyme crushed on my chopping board, a certain
song on my radio, you'll remember.
