Mediterranean cruise....
« on: February 20, 2008, 02:31:13 PM »
My wife and I are heading on a cruise this fall...we are both poz but not on meds, very healthy and have good numbers. Are their any certain precautions we should take such as foods we eat...etc? I am sure we will have to get some extra vaccinations. Are there any certain travel restictions we might be suprised with being we are poz?

I did a Mediterranean cruise a couple of years ago -- I had no need for any vaccinations.  I guess it depends where you are going (We visited, Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Croatia).  I also didn't take any special precautions on food (of course, I hate sushi, but that might be one).  Talk to your doctor, but go and enjoy yourself -- a vacation shouldn't cause you stress.

Probably the thing you need to worry about most is Norovirus.  Got it on a ship once..ugh  :-X.  Wash your hands before eating anything, only use your cabin washroom not the public ones and avoid the hot tubs.  The more paranoid might advise you to skip buffets all together, but hey, you've got to get your money's worth :D

I'm sticking with my "enjoy your vacation" theme.  I go on 1 - 2 cruises a year -- the Norovirus scare is media driven.  Far more people get the Norovirus on land, in hotels, etc than on a cruise ship.  Now, I know it sucks if you DO get it.  Being locking up in your cabin while sick is not a good thing when you've already paid for your trip, but chances are in your favor that you will be just fine.  Now, washing your hands is good advice -- most cruise ships now have Purell at entrances to all dining areas, so use it.  I jump in the hot tubs morning and night -- so, unless you have some skin issues -- I say go for it.
Vacations are about seeing things and forgetting your worries, so try, as best you can, to not focus on your HIV.
