Retreat for poz gay/bi men: October 13-16, 2008
« on: January 30, 2008, 12:15:17 PM »
Just alerting other guys about this one. I'm pondering attending but haven't yet made up my mind..

"This 4- day retreat is an international gathering of HIV-positive gay and bi-sexual men. We will be learning about medical, psychological and spiritual tools to help create healthier and more fulfilling lives while forming bonds and friendships with other HIV-positive gay men from different parts of the world. The program will include informational sessions as well exercises and participation by all the attendees with attention given to the full body-mind-spirit connection. We will also have plenty of time for social activities with movie screenings, nature hikes, and some parties."

Sounds interesting, but I wouldn't be able to do this and the AMG.

Thanks,

Dan

I'm a little skeptical about this event, Keyite.  Where did you hear about this event, btw, as I don't see anything about the actual organizers themselves.

I also found this a little funny:  "We will be at a christian retreat center so we ask all participants to be respectful of that and refrain from inappropriate behavior."  http://www.brotherhoodretreats.com/privacy.htm Though I am glad that they are planning the event to coincide with the full moon as they announce.

Just to be clear, I'm not raising questions about you Keyite - just the event.

Anyway, as Dan mentioned, I would never be able to afford this event and the AMG even if I didn't have any questions about the organizers and the focus.

Hi Iggy,

I found out about it via the mailing list for the London branch of SIN (Strength In Numbers) - their international website is here: http://www.sinhq.xbuild.com/ (although I don't think this event is actually affiliated with SIN). I don't have a professional involvement with the event, and as I said, I have yet to decide if I'll join myself. I have however emailed the organisers and they say more detail and a full schedule will be finalised soon and then published on the site.

The bit you found "a little funny" you actually quoted out of context, thereby implying a rather different meaning. It actually reads:

"Will people be having sex?

This is not an orgy or sex party gathering. We will be at a christian retreat center so we ask all participants to be respectful of that and refrain from inappropriate behavior. If you make a special connection with a person and go off to a private location together, nobody will mind, but this event is about community and thus we all need to make sure we respect each other. Again, use common sense!"

I don't personally find that a particularly peculiar statement.

Hey Keyite,

Actually, I'm glad you posted the whole section, should have myself as it is even funnier than I remembered.

Maybe it is just me, but the forewarning that interested participants better behave in a manner respectful of Christian values sort of seems to be hilarious in regards to retreat aimed at gay and bisexual poz men.  The section on drug use was a hoot too.  I wonder if the organizers actually understand the use of marijuana among many poz people.

I'm glad you find amusement in the most unlikely places - that's gotta be a good thing in life. Bottom line obviously is that the kind of event you have in mind would be a very different one. Lucky you're not forced to go then.

There is a similar event each year near Park City Ut. The application uses similar language regarding sexual behavior and drug use. Its far from unusual.

Hope you have a great time keyite! :)
