The cost of Sperm Washing
« on: January 31, 2008, 11:51:56 PM »
I know many people are curious from my last post on the cost to have sperm washing done. Like others told me it is expensive but I spent about 45 minutes with a doctor in NY the other day and they gave me a breakdown of the cost. This is having the procedure done at the Columbia University. They do not call it sperm washing anymore they call it ICSI I dont remember what it stands for now but that is the term they use.

ICSI (sperm Washing) - $2,000 - $3,000
IVF (Invetro) for first time patients - $6600 this includes the bloodwork, some meds, ultrasounds etc..
Meds - $1,000-$1500
Consultation is $450

They are sending me a packet of paperwork to give me more information and all the paperwork that has to be filed out along with a list of tests that have to be compleated so they can tell you if you are able to be in the program. She told me that I could have the tests done here at my local OBGYN and send them the results then they will tell me if I can be in the program before I fly to NY and pay the consultation fee. If I go into the program I would have to make 2 trips to NY one for the Consultation and Orientation and one for the procedure. She said the whole procedure from beginning to the "yeah Im pregnant" takes 4-6 weeks. Also there success rate for first time pregnancy is 66% and in every procedure they have done they have never had the negitave partner become infected. If you want more information there website is www.columbiafertility.org

I hope this helps some of you in a position like me.

Stacy,

Does your husband/partner have an undetectable viral load? If so, you might want to look into some of the recent studies that show transmission in heterosexual couples to be negligible under those circumstances. If it weren't five in the morning where I am, I'd look up a few links for you. Maybe tomorrow or ... a day or two. ;)

Ann,

Yes he has been undetectable for about 2 months now. I read the article that was done by the Swiss. We will difintely wait a while before we actually get pregnant we just know we want get pregnant sometime this year. The problem Im having now is do follow the new studies and try to have a baby the "old fashioned' way. Along with going on what the doctor told us that the average is about 1 out of every 500 people becoming infected or do you do the safe route and pay all that money for a 2 out of 3 chance of getting pregnant on the first treatment.

Just out of curiosity if you were in my position what would you do?

Stacy,

If I were in your position and know what I know now, I'd go for it and put that money into a college fund. Seriously. I would.

Ann,

Thank you so much for your honesty. You are the first person that would actually answer that question. So thank you. We have been discussing everything and in my heart I want to take the risk but there is that small risk holding me back from saying yes lets do it. But the more I read the more I want to save the 15000 dollars. That would make a nice family vacation!!!  :)

hi Worriedwife,
I just want to let you know that my wife and I tried 2 attempts at columbia ..the 1st time she did get pregnant, then had a miscarrage at 2 weeks.they said that happens to about 50 %. most woman dont even know it happened.
We tried again, cause columbia told us we had another shot at it according to our insurance. She did it and it didnt work for us the second time.now they are trying to bill us $12,000 saying that we actually did not have the benifits available.so we are in the middle of fighting this bill.
after research and speaking to DR. Pietro Vernazza,my wife and I decided to take the plunge and do it naturally.
Ultimatley its something you and your husband have to sit down and make the decision between yourselves.
My doctor agrees with the Swiss theory. And has told me he has a few patients in my our situation and have done it naturally with no transmission.
I wish you the best in your journey to have a baby.

Dingo,

Thanks so much for the post. We have pretty much decided to try it the natural way but we are going to wait until he is undetectable for 6 months (like the article says). I am also going to talk to my OB about taking some fertility pills even though I know I can get pregnant fairly easily I just want to limit the amount of times we need to have unprotected sex. Call me parionid :P.

 Worriedwife,
I'll call you smart, there's nothing wrong in taking extra steps to get this thing done on the first shot. Actually thats a good idea.
My wife will be taking truvada around the time of ovulation as per the Swiss doctors recommendations, just as an extra safety net for my wife. You may want to consider the same.

Dingo,

Can you tell me how that works? How did you pick that med, is that what your taking. Also, is her doc going to give her the perscription for it even though she does not have HIV? I have read things about taking ART meds while trying but I had not really thought about it. How long will she need to take the meds?

Dingo,

I figured if I told my OB about our situation hopefully she could give me a perscription or at least tell me where to go to get on some type of fertility pills. Im not sure if a regular OB will be able to handle this or not. I have not really looked into in to much. I just figured out that was a good place to start. Thanks for the link I will look at it soon.

Worriedwife,
be sure to click on the interview ,where you can hear him (listen).
its just more comforting to actually hear the doctor speaking than to just read the transcript.

Hi Stacy,

You might want to find an OB/GYN who specialises in positive pregnancies. Your current doc may be able to give you a referral.

Stacey,
What did you think about the interview?
I gave my wife a few truvada tablets dfrom my stash during her ovuation as per the Swiss Dr.'s suggestion.
Where were you planning to get your fertilaty pills from?
My wife may want to try that as well for the same reason'

Rob,

I really liked the interview it was very informative. So did my husband. As far as the fertility pills Im going to ask my OBGYN and see if I can get some from them but Im not sure what they will say. You said you gave some of the truvia to your wife from your stash. Will my husbands doctor give him some if he asks? If not will his ID Doc give me a perscription for some? Do you know Im not sure how all that works. I do know that we are wanting to get pregnant sometime in like the september time frame so that I have a summer baby instead of another winter baby so I am going to call and make an appt. with my doctor and see what they say or see if they can give me a referral for somewhere else.

Hi Stacy,

I suggest you print out some of the studies/interviews you've been looking at to show your doctors. They often don't have the time to keep up on these kinds of things and if you have the studies to hand to back up what you're asking for, you stand a better chance of getting what you want.

Rob,

Thanks I just read the emails and so did my husband. I find it interesting that he says that the risk is the same as crashing in an airplane. That really suprised me. Thanks so much for all of the information. When are ya'll talking about getting pregnant? Just curious. Let me know if your wife finds out anything about some fertility meds before I do and I will do the same. Again thanks

Rob,

Thanks I appreciate it. I am curious if they will give the fertility pills to your wife because I was curious if a regular OB is the way to go. I was wondering if maybe I should go to a high risk OBGYN. If there is a difference Im not sure.
